Posted - Feb 08 2014 : 10:42:13 AM A few weeks ago, my grandmother's last living sister passed away. I had just spoken to her a few weeks before that. She was in her late eighties, had been ill but a fighter, for sure. Always lived on and took care of her own farm. We had visited her when my daughter was around three. The two of them spoke by phone after that, and my daughter always called her "Grandma EllaJean". I was so glad that my daughter got to meet her, since she never got to meet my grandmother. Anyway, I was so sad she passed, she was a sweet lady, and also sad because she was my last link to my grandmother.
I signed the online funeral home guest book, since I could not get down there in time for the funeral. Thankfully, I checked the mark that others could contact me. Last week, I got an email from my grandmother's sister's daughter who lives in California! This is the sister that passed away when I was a toddler, and it broke my grandma's heart. They were very close. I always heard about her little sister. Now I am in contact with her daughter, my grandma's niece. We've exchanged emails, photos...and today I am going to send her a copy of the letter I found from her mother in an old sewing pattern of my grandmother's. She sent me a photo of her mom, so beautiful like my grandmother and Great Aunt EllaJean was. It makes me so happy, a cousin I never knew I even had.
When God closes a door, he opens a window.

Posted - Feb 11 2014 : 4:01:10 PM Peggy... I am so sorry... Sending you big hugs...
You, too, Nicole... But it sounds like the big one God gave you in reconnecting with your cousin is better than any earthly hug - what a great, great thing! I bet your Grandma and Aunt are up there in Heaven all happy and just showering down lots of smiles on you and your cousin... That is just SUCH a cool thing! I'm so, so happy for both of you!! :)
I have to say, too... I love the title of this post. That's exactly how my Grandma used to say it, "When one door closes, another one opens..." I can't tell you how many times over the years I have found great comfort in hearing her words in my heart! Thank you for the extra smiles today! Love you, sister!
