recently i was diagnosed with lupus. i am quite shocked, but past symptoms are starting to make sense. my rheumatologist wants to put me on plaquenil which is known to cause eye problems. i saw the doctor yesterday and he was urging me to go for an eye exam so he can start me on this med. well i made the decision today that i am not going to take it. i am not willing to gamble my eyesight for this med.

i've done a lot of reading about autoimmune diseases, and as with anything else diet is mentioned. it's not like i eat bad to begin with, but i definitely could be putting more good things into my body. i recently started juicing again which i love. i call that 'my medicine'. my plan is to become more aggressive in juicing and taking in more probioitic foods, omega 3, vitamin d. i made sauerkraut last year which i still have. my goal is to quell the inflammation that is supposedly going on inside of me.

i believe as a culture we have turned from the past ways of how our relatives likely ate, and i believe that because of all the processed, fast food and pasturized food we are now accustomed to, it has brought on much illness in our society. i'm sure environmental toxins are playing a role as well.

I'm hoping that if i add a few more beneficial things to my diet on a regular basis i can overcome this. I've always had the 'back to our roots' mentality, but now feel i must fully embrace it, for my life, literally.

I wonder why doctors NEVER tell you to eat fermented foods, or to juice. Why are they always pushing poisonous pills? There just has to be another way.

I wondered who else may have this and how they are dealing with it?

Thanks
Connie

Connie ,
I have lupus and sjogrens syndrome and a few other autoimmune diseases. I am on plaquenil. I have my eyes checked every six months and sometimes more often. I try to eat an anti-inflammatroy diet. Some days are worse than others But I tell myself that I have lupus , it doesn't have me. Good luck.

Sending prayers for answers and for healing your way Connie. I totally understand your resistance to medication, as I know that I too always look for a natural way of fighting illness. Too many side effects from these medications that the doctors push so frequently!
Be well,

my doctor called last night. i asked him if he was 100% sure i had this... he said he will know for sure when the additional bloodwork comes back. so maybe i dont have it? i feel like i'm on a roller coaster ride. why tell me i likely have it then? definitely an autoimmune thing going on. having pain coming and going in body today, not good.

Hi, Connie, i should start off by saying that I do not have Lupus, but I do have MS. My advice to you would be to only do what you feel comfortable with. If the effects of treatment don't out-weigh the benefits for you, then it's a real no-brainer. I must say that I do believe in both sides of the aisle, as I've been on medication for the last 13 years and my MS has been stable (for the most part). But I also eat healthy, no wheat or corn based foods, not much meat and lots of kinds of fruits and vegetables (grown myself when I can).
Wish you all the best.

Connie there is a doctor that was on Dr. "Oz show yesterday talking about wheat. He is convinced through studies and patients that eating wheat does a host of bad things and causes many of the autoimmune diseases. He call todays wheat frankenwheat. His patients cut all wheat from their diet and they either got about 90 percent better or were cured. You can check out the link from yesterdays show on Doctoroz.com. What he said made sense and what was kinda funny I had just got the book Lose the wheat and lose the fat. I am thinking about trying to go wheat free for a week and see what happens. He says thats all the time it takes to start to noticing a difference. Just a thought and hope this helps.

I don't have Lupus but I do have cronic sinus and allergy problems and have had many surgeries for this. My immune system is shot due to the overuse of antibiotics trying to combat this.I also have moderate IBS which has improved as I have learned to eat better. I am always learning and trying to heal myself through nutrition. I made kraut last year and I am on my 3rd batch of kombucha. I have cut back on wheat and I think I am going to try going wheat free for a week to see how I feel. I don't eat a ton of wheat but I do make bread and eat it a few times a week with my breakfast.I think my husband is the one really having trouble with wheat. He has the symptoms. Also cereal has wheat so we consume it more than we realize.Check into it its kinda interesting.Sounds like you are on the right path.

Connie, I don't have Lupus, but I do have Lyme Disease and Celiac Sprue. I just read a really good book about chronic illness, Lyme disease and other auto immune diseases. I It is called Why Can't I Get Better by Dr Richard Horowitz. I would encourage you to read it. He talks about many diseases and conditions and underlying causes and things to do to try to figure out what is creating illnesses. Amazon.com has it along with lots of reviews you can read about the book. It was well worth my money.

I have to eat very clean and have to cut out almost all carbs. I don't do dairy, gluten, sugar, any high carb veggies, or fruit. It has helped me so much. I hate not being able to eat. I also juice and do carrots, cucumbers, and lemon. I love the taste. I also add a bit of stevia to sweeten it. An apple can be used if you do fruit. Diet has been huge for me. I would encourage you to read up on the GAPS, Paleo, or SCD diet. All of them are to regain health. I don't eat anything out of a can except coconut milk. I buy the kind that is just coconut and water. I have trouble with fermented foods because of a mold issue. I wish I could, I used to love sauerkraut.

Interesting your doctor wants you on plaquenil, they use that for Lyme Disease also. Facebook has groups you can join that discuss Lupus. Also I belong to a couple that discuss herbs. I find that helpful for treatment of Lyme. I have used many herbs, tinctures, natural antibiotics, etc. These were prescribed by my doctor who is a DO Lyme doctor. I get along with them sooooo much better than drugs. Right now I am on Cryptolepis, which is a natural antibiotic. Stephen Buhner is a well known herbalist that has a really good book to read on herbs. If you want to chat, pm me and we can email back and forth about natural treatments etc.
