On Monday's snow day here in the Midwest, I was moved to write a haiku. I thought I would share here.

Wind Chill - Forty Below
Gusts sculpt frozen dunes
Hot gas furnace blows warm air
Just thin glass between

Want to join in? Remember the haiku form is 3 lines with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the 2nd line, and 5 syllables in the third line. Other suggestions include nature as a subject, with the first line maybe referencing the season, and the second line having an action or verb, and the last line can express a feeling. But the rules are made to be broken!

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands - You shall be happy and it shall be well with you. -Psalm 128.2

School starts very soon.
So much planning to do now.
Students arrive soon.
They come excited to learn
The future shines in their eyes.

High keen of locusts
Their sound - hot in the treetops
Sing friends! Sing and die!

Hazy, green, and sultry.
Butterflies flutter by me.
Lazy afternoon.

Perfect summer day.

I decided to start this up again. The first graders are ending up a unit on self expression thru poetry. Let us celebrate our seasons with haiku (5-7-5) and tanka (5-7-5-7-7).

Spring is here again.
Garden plants await the soil.
So much desire.
So much potential for life.
So much potential for love.

There are a lot of weed seeds
Next year will be worse

Kids will make you crazy, no?
Yet how we miss them...

On hot August days
I write the word September
In my mind and dream
of crispness in the air
And walking among the leaves

Marie,
Best wishes for your new school year! I've been retired for a few years after 35 years with 1st to 3rd graders. This time of year I especially remember the excitement and challenges of each new year.

Beautiful summer
Will soon draw to a close.
Let it fill your heart!

Susan

School year to begin.
Will be working with first grade.
New kids, new faces.
How will I engage with them?
Such responsibility.

Humid summer days.
Cool and humid summer nights.
Day dreams of autumn
When harvests taken inside
All taken root or has died.

Gentle summer rain
Falling on the parched garden,
Reviving the plants.

Thanks, Marie, for giving us a new pattern to try! I love poetry but have never studied different forms. I am not quite sure this fits, but I'll work on it!

At our county fair,
The days go by so quickly
Much to see and do,
Reconnecting with old friends,
Community and spirit.

Cherry tomatoes
Blushing red so very fast
Causing me to look
from the porch while passing by
In hopes of plucking one more.

First Tanka try. :)

Maybe you can fit all of that into a tanka, a form of Japanese sonnet.

"The Japanese tanka is a thirty-one-syllable poem, traditionally written in a single unbroken line. A form of waka, Japanese song or verse, tanka translates as “short song," and is better known in its five-line, 5/7/5/7/7 syllable count form.

One of the oldest Japanese forms, tanka originated in the seventh century, and quickly became the preferred verse form not only in the Japanese Imperial Court, where nobles competed in tanka contests, but for women and men engaged in courtship. Tanka’s economy and suitability for emotional expression made it ideal for intimate communication; lovers would often, after an evening spent together (often clandestinely), dash off a tanka to give to the other the next morning as a gift of gratitude.

In many ways, the tanka resembles the sonnet, certainly in terms of treatment of subject. Like the sonnet, the tanka employs a turn, known as a pivotal image, which marks the transition from the examination of an image to the examination of the personal response. This turn is located within the third line, connecting the kami-no-ku, or upper poem, with the shimo-no-ku, or lower poem."

Bountiful garden
Chard, lettuce and now the beans
Nourishing our lives
Filling our senses with peace,
Filling our hearts with fondness.

Marie,
I enjoyed you post today. I have been trying all day to come with something similar, even was trying to get the word "bounty" into it! Our list of produce is a little different but the thankful tone is a lot the same. Our strawberries are almost done, but now there are peas, broccoli, cauliflower, blueberries, gooseberries, currants and plenty of lettuce.Just today we have blossoms on cukes and squash.

The summer's bounty,
Filling our jars and freezer,
Gifts from God above.
