...but someone I don't even know, have never met in my life, was able to go on-line and put a hold on my mail.There's something called premium forwarding service which this person PAID for and if I hadn't gotten suspicious and gone to the post office TODAY, on Wednesday my mail for the past week would have been sent to this person I don't even know. Apparently someone is doing this trying to get other people's personal information. I contacted the USPS line to report an attempted mail theft. I was lucky. Think of the people who aren't so lucky. How can someone do this? Well, there are websites where you can pay a fee, and they allow you to put a hold on someone's mail without verifying who you are...this is outrageous. Just want to warn others about this. I'd never heard of anything like this before. My cousin works for the USPS and she had never heard of it. I'm lucky I was able to talk to her because my local post office was very withholding of information. Beware of scam artists--if you go several days without receiving any mail, check into ASAP.I'm glad I did.

Not ready to alert the media just yet--I know someone who is a reporter for a major metro newspaper. If I don't get some satisfactory answers, I will contact her.

Strange that they didn't ask for ID.....three cities we have lived in (some big, some small) have always asked. Sounds like you PO is slacking. So sad that they won't take you seriously.

When I went to the post office to find out why I wasn't receiving my mail last week, they didn't even ask for an ID. I was holding it in my hand and they never asked for it. When I told the supervisor (not the postmaster, whom I haven't been able to get hold of)that I didn't even know the person who had put my mail on hold, she said"Well, it has to be someone you know. It's probably a relative." Hello????

We have always had to show ID to pick up any held mail so I wonder if this is a sick prank. So many sick people out there.

I see that Premium Forwarding Service is run by the Postal Service itself. It looks like it would be remarkably easy for a stranger to hack. You can sign up in person at the PO, where they ask for ID, or you can sign up online with nothing more than a credit card. This is really freaking me out. |

Well, I've contacted the federal postal inspectors and they are investigating it. I also contacted the state Attorney General's office and got the number for my congressional representative, but I haven't called yet. I'm waiting to find out what the postal inspectors tell me. This is making me feel paranoid. I want to know why this person selected me--I don't have much of an on-line presence, don't do Facebook or anything like that. This chatroom is about the extent of it. I check my e-mail and read the local news. that's about it. I worried that the person who did this may know someone I know, may have hacked into their computer or something. It's the not knowing that upsets me. And the local post office isn't telling me very much. I've been checking out victims' rights but so far, nobody has admitted I'm a victim. But I'll keep at it until I have some answers. I can be a potent force when I'm ticked off, and I'm very ticked off.

You could call the United States Postal Inspection Service. Google them. This agency, nicknamed "the Silent Service," investigates all kinds of mail fraud and they are really slick. If they don't know about this scam, they should. They will appreciate hearing about your experience, especially if you can supply the URL for this online place where people can pay to hack your "snail mail." That your local post office didn't take your report seriously, and didn't offer to contact the agency for you, is really shocking, but perhaps not surprising. |

The really scary part is the way that no one at the local level belives I'm the victim of a crime. The local post office doesn't believe it--"We're the U.S Postal service! Everything we do is legit!" is exactly what I was told. When I went to the police, they called the post office and the same lady told them that it wasn't a crime. So I have zero help from the people at the local level who should be investigating this. The people at the federal level believe me. I know I live in a backwards town and people can be ignorant, but this is ridiculous.

ARGHH!They did it again! This person went on-line AGAIN and put my mail on hold. I had to go to the post office to pick up my mail. It is being investigated at the federal level and I should hear back soon. I guess this is some kind of new scam, so new that they don't know what they're dealing with. But it's happening in other places and to other people. My local post office will not admit that a crime has taken place--a federal crime. this is serious stuff. Don't mean to sound harsh, but I hope this person chokes on their Thanksgiving turkey. Be careful--I've now become hyper-vigilant about this. It's nerve-wracking. I'm glad tomorrow is a holiday cause I can't focus on work when I get like this.
