Posted - Nov 26 2013 : 12:08:57 PM Scurryfunge: (Verb) Obsolete English; to rush around cleaning when company is on their way.
No matter how much I clean, as soon as I know that company is on it's way, especially for the holidays, I see a zillion and one things that I missed or that I want to change So I've spent the last three days in a hurry hurry scurryfunge How are all of you doing with the pre-holiday preparations? I'm down to last minute furniture steaming and wood polishing in the living room, glassware hand washing and drying to make sure that there are none of those nasty hard water streaks and other bits and doodles in the kitchen. I'm making cornbread right now to dry for the dressing and it smells really good!
But I'm dashing around in a mad scurryfunge as usual

Posted - Nov 28 2013 : 07:01:32 AM How amusing! Not at my house, but we've definitely been scurryfunging at my parents house this week! My turn will be next month. Thanks for sharing this fun word with us Annika!

Posted - Nov 28 2013 : 05:31:41 AM What a perfect word of the season!! It just underscores that this sort of activity has been around for hundreds of years and women have always known the meaning without knowing the word!! Hahahaha!! Scurryfungery it is!

Posted - Nov 27 2013 : 3:28:34 PM Ha Annika! That is a great word. My dad use to use odd words when I was growing up. He would tell me not to gargefargle around. (my guess it that is means doing things of unimportance and wasting time.) I have been scurryfunging around every time I get a call from a realtor wanting to show out listed home. I am glad it is being shown, but to keep it move-in ready all the time is tiring. Our furniture leaves Dec. 3rd for Idaho. Yeah! Annie

'twas a fine day of scurryfungery at my house today, so glad to amuse with old oddments of the English language. I've loved old and odd words since I was a little girl
Susan, it's pronounced scurry as usual, and the funge is pronounced like sponge.
Sadly, I haven't found one for dashing around cleaning like mad and swearing out loud at the same time yet, but I'm sure that there is one somewhere because I do that too

Posted - Nov 26 2013 : 6:53:09 PM No such activity for me. I am going to someone else's house this year. We usually eat Thanksgiving dinner out and tip the waitstaff really, really well.

Posted - Nov 26 2013 : 4:34:51 PM So how do you say it? The scurry part is easy but the other part?? I often stash a laundry basket of odds and ends at the last minute, so I'm trying to avoid that this time. The floor will need a mopping, but the worst of the cleaning is done. Now its down to cooking and setting up the table. Even with the cooking I've learned to do ahead what I can so I can enjoy family more. Have a joyous holiday!

Posted - Nov 26 2013 : 1:38:52 PM I'm with you Cindy...I never knew there was a WORD just for that insane, mad-dashing, we all do when company is coming. LOL
I have often said to my DH...it's a good thing we have company once in awhile...because that is the only time I really clean good and hard and deep. Sad, But True!!

Posted - Nov 26 2013 : 12:29:25 PM I had no idea there is a word for that particular activity - thank you for enlightening me! I am a scurryfunger extraorindaire.
Is there a variation for when one scurryfunges while shrieking "oh expletive!"? I would imagine that could vary by part of the country AND maybe by which side of the family is coming to visit : ) |
