WOW! I have heard of this happening, but luckily never experienced it! What a bummer! Could chickens even eat all those?

Oh man! Is it one of those 100 year things or are they always that bad?
Good luck. I remember our lab eating the grasshoppers when we lived in KS. She got some bad gas afterwards ...

I used to catch grasshoppers by the bagfullls for my Dad to go fishing then when I turned 11 yrs old my Dad sent me out behind the barn to get some and all of a sudden I couldn't stand to touch them. Like womanhood was emerging I guess. It was so weird. Can't stand them around me at all now. They just totally creep me out.

Love the replies above. One year they ate big holes in our aluminum window screens.
I grew up on Eagle Mountain Lake near Fort Worth, Tx. When I was young, my little brother and me ( I was between the ages of 6 to 12 yrs old) would go barefoot holding a large sack in our hand and crawl through a barbed wire fence in the hot summer time. We would catch grasshoppers for our Dad. He would go and put them on his trout lines.
Such memories.
When Dad was in Japan during WWll, the Japanese would fry grasshoppers and call them Texas Gobbers. They would sell them to the drunken GIs. The next day the GIs couldn't believe what they ate.
I promise you that next year I will have chickens even if they scratch up my flower beds.

Patsy my in laws live in TX and they have years that they get overrun with those big hoppers. Their county extension office told them they are on a migration path. But bugs tend to be worse on some years and not so much in others. We get tons of Luna moths here sometimes, and then the tomato hornworm which is their offspring. They destroyed my daughters tomatoes last year, but this year I haven't even seen one, although my daughter did find 1 worm. Certain weeds have their cycle too. Some years we get mustard weed and then it all dies and we won't see it for several years. If your garden isn't too devastated by now you might try purchasing some adult or half grown turkeys or geese to let them wander and eat them. I have heard turkeys are the best but have never owned one, I do have geese and I know that they don't tend to bother much in the garden but do eat weeds and I assume they would like grasshoppers too. I'm sorry you are having to deal with them. My Grandmother was from TX and grew up in a hard life of picking cotton for a dollar a day and she would just grab up a hopper and pinch its head right off without a second thought. She tried to teach me to do it but I just aint up to that. LOL.

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear. But, I do love that you found a little humor in the welcome sign. Perhaps hang a smaller "No Grasshoppers Allowed" sign. Really am sorry for your garden loss. Such a bummer.

I'm sorry Patsy, I know that this is so discouraging. We had alot of grasshoppers a couple of months ago. A product that we use is called Nolo Bait. We applied it and have hardly seen any grasshoppers since.

Oh Patsy, how disappointing! We have had that problem several years ago and they can be so devastating!
I know it's a chemical and we don't like using them, but we were very desperate and resorted to using Sevin.
Hope you find a solution!

Oh my word! Ident think I have ever seen s many (and huge) grasshopper-y thing-y's. EEEWWWwww.
Sorry they are eating your garden on you.
Now clue how to get rid of them :(.
