I'm in Seattle this week for training. (I work for Amazon.) This is my fourth trip this year and I just absolutely love this area. My plan is to try to transfer out here next year. My question to Washington state farmgirls - is living in this area of the country really as great as it seems or am I simply romanticizing it? It feels like home to me and I hate when I have to leave. I'm in love with Puget Sound and and the gorgeous mountains and all the fresh seafood to eat. What part of this fantastic state do you call home and do you recommend living here?

My hometown is Kennewick, WA - across the state from Seattle. It's a great place to live! The only thing I don't like about the Seattle area is the rain, rain and more rain. So many gray days too. It can be hard to get used to and even become depressing. So make sure you can cope with that kind of weather. Otherwise, you'll love it in Washington!

Thanks for all the info, ladies! My heart is heavy because I'm missing Seattle. I hope to get back there soon and move out there next year. It's just gorgeous... it feels like home to me! My co-worker is going to be there this week and it's supposed to rain every day and I'm so jealous!!! I might be hittin' you gals up with Washington state questions, so look out! ;P

I live in Eastern Washington, in Spokane . . . in the country in an area called Orchard Prairie on 10 acres nestled in wheat fields . . . we absolutely love the beauty of where we live . . . we feel like we are deep in the country, yet I can be at Winco or Home Depot in 10 minutes! I love visiting Western Washington and the beautiful lush greenery of the area, but I love the drier climate of Spokane and the slower pace we enjoy here. Welcome to Washington!

Hi Rachel! Well, as a Seattle native, I believe I can say without bias that Washington is the most beautiful state in the union. :) I would just echo Karin's comments about the diversity of the landscape. Just about everything a person could want to see is within a day's driving distance...from the ocean, to the rainforest of the Olympic Peninsula, to mountains, to the high desert-like central part of the state, to the rolling hills of the Palouse. I never get tired of visiting other parts of the state. Particularly the Tri-Cities, Betty's part of the world. :)
As for the city itself, I think Seattle has its pros and cons just like any city. I work not far from the main Amazon campus, and right now the construction and road projects are a little nuts (which I'm sure you saw on your visit), but manageable. I'm not a "big city" person, so I live in a fairly quiet residential neighborhood, but if you like the city atmosphere there are great places to live downtown too. Like Paula mentioned, I think the biggest challenge here is the weather. It's overcast and drizzly a lot of the year. Even as a life-long resident I'm not used to it, but I guess that's what winter getaways to Mexico and Hawaii are for. :) If you have any specific questions about life in Seattle feel free to message me!

Yes, it's true winters are much more tolerable if you find a way to enjoy them. I prefer the cooler temps to the heat -- I melt when it gets over 70. This past winter my outdoors group did some beginning snowshoeing trips. We have a number of ladies who are also California transplants and they really enjoyed it! You should join us! |

I am a Native of Eastern Washington (Spokane) but have lived a few other places in the US and Canada. What I really love about this area is the diversity. Mountains and forests to the north and east, the dry and open Columbia Basin to the west, and the rolling hills of farmland of the Palouse to the south. It is a good place if you love being outdoors hiking and bike riding, etc. I also like it because we're a big enough place yet you can get away from the crowds fairly easily. My place is in suburbia yet it was a rural twist to it -- I have over an acre and there are horses that live kitty korner to me, yet I have close and easy access to I-90 and all kinds of stores and services.
I'm going to be heading over to the west side next month for a short vacation -- near Mount Shuksan. I'm looking forward to it although the traffic kind of scares me!

If you take a quick glance to the north, I'm in Everett - 30 minutes to the north. It is beautiful here but the grey skies, darkness and rain can get to you. I take extra Vitamin D and sometimes I use a light box for a few minutes in the morning in winter. Eastern Washington is waaaaaaaaay different. Lots of sunshine for the most part. Transportation issues on the I-5 corridor in King County are crazy. Seattle in particular can't seem to make up their mind regarding light rail, toll bridges, replacing floating bridges, now the new floating bridge which isn't even done yet has leaks, the political scene is very liberal in King County. Other than that.......it is beautiful. Not many other places where you can take a ferry to an island to get away from it all, fresh seafood, quality arts and music scene. |

And if you look South and East, that's where I live--in the Columbia Basin area. It's like a fruit belt. I am presently harvesting strawberries and raspberries. I have a decent sized garden (for a developed area) and I also put food by for the winter. This week I am going to be picking cherries to dry. In the Basin we get 300 days of sunshine. It is gorgeous here too.

I will be totally honest... I am not in love with it here... BUT I do love some of the things about living here.

If you are standing in Seattle and look towards Mt Rainier....that's where we live. Way over there in the foothills in a little town called Buckley. =) We love it here. It can get kind of gray and that's a definite challenge for me, but on the good days... it's amazing! It's green and fresh, lots to do and see. I can understand why you feel drawn here.
