here in our little town. I dont shop here very often. But I buy some veggies and I'm at the check out. The cute little clerk keeps looking at my red cabbage and checking it against the list she has. Finally I say " Thats red cabbage" "Oh thank you" she says, "We get new stuff in here all the time, it's hard to keep up."
I laughhed all the way home, then thought a little more about it and it made me sad.

It is sad that people don't know where there food comes from or that they don't even care to know. One school district was banned for trying to grow a garden because ONE parent Did not want her child working in dirt. Really?

Most of the American population is 3 or 4 generations removed from the farm. It really is sad because we are ending up with whole generations of people who will become our national leaders and legislatures that know zip about where food comes from. So very sad for all of us, really. I have some of my Dads report cards from when he was a little kid in school and they were actually graded on their knowledge of agriculture and home chores and such. He was born on 1921. I'll have to post a pic of it next time I come across it. It's important for kids to learn about agriculture. It gives them a whole different perspective on things.

Just yesterday, on my FB newsfeed, someone highlighted an article which someone had written about buying your meet at the grocery store, where no animals are harmed.... I had to share it with my friends, got quite the response, it did. 
Actually, I can't pronounce neuchatal either, but, I sure as shootin' eat it. 
I've also wondered how people who don't eat veggies/fruit live from day to day. Their innards must look like...what?...stone slabs?? 
Hubby is getting annoyed at me, because I'm living in my cookbooks now. Coming up with all sorts of new recipes with fresh fruits and veggies. Sometimes I have to sneak them up on him but he's at least eating better, in my view.

Prairiehawk that reminds me. When we lived in NYC, I was trying to get a cat-but I had no references, and it was crazy!
Any way, this one lady who interviews me about a cat. We had the interview in her home. And every thing was going well. Till I looked outside and she had a dog just like my dad's hunting dog. And I make the mistake of saying oh she's beautiful, my dad has a hunting dog just like her. The lady gasps and says he doesn't use it for hunting does he? And I say yes. And the whole interview turned. Meanwhile she was eating a Wendy's hamburger! I'm POSITIVE that the birds, and deer my dad brings home has had a much happier life, then the cow that she bought from Wendy's did! And my dad was probably more humane in his slaughter of said hunted animals as well!

This happens a lot to me at our Kroger stores. Largely, it's teenage clerks, but it really tells you what their parents DON'T do at home--cook. Or, if they cook, they're not using a variety of fresh fruits and veggies.
Othertimes, it's kids asking me how to pronounce some of the items that go across the conveyor like "neufchatel cheese" or Thai sauces, Indian simmer sauces, etc.

Happens to me all the time, too. It is sad. Sometimes I wonder how people's bodies function when they don't eat a single vegetable.

This happens to me frequently, and it makes me sad. I've had checkers not know what butternut squash was, or artichokes.

The saddest thing I ever heard was when a vegetarian said that people should buy their meat at a grocery store, where they don't kill the animals.

I got that ALL the time in NYC. Didn't know what zucchini was, english cucumbers, etc etc. It was SAD! But, that's how people are now, not many veggies come at Mc D's!

That's true. When I sell eggs, people don't know they come in other colors. Or they think wild chickens lay brown or blue eggs.
