My family has all been down and out with the flu, well, except for my husband and son -- I'm finally feeling better, but Saturday night my husband came home from icefishing with a 5-gal bucket of perch and two large northern pike. They cleaned about half of the perch and then my husband started feeling like I had when I was sick -- sure enough, he had a fever, aches, etc. Soooo we put the fish out in a cold protected place and went to bed.

Next morning -- I'm just about better (after being sick for a week!) and he is out cold. No way is he going to be able to clean fish. Now, my 10-yr old son and I already know how to fillet perch, so that was not a problem, but northerns have to be cleaned a really special way so that these "Y" bones that they have get cut out of the fish. I've never done them, never really cared to learn :) haha -- but now my husband was icky sick and we have 2 huge-o northern pike waiting!

Hello YouTube!! I looked up how to clean northern pike and found some GREAT videos that were so clear in how to do it -- so I plunged right in and tried and it wasn't too bad! In the midst of it my husband woke up and came out to see what I was doing -- and he was so pleased with the results that he thinks he'll try this way of cleaning them rather than the way he's always done it! It yields 2 nice big boneless fillets rather than the chunks he usually makes it into.

In case any of you fish for northerns, here are the videos that were so helpful to me!

I love YouTube! I never had the kind of grandparents that teach you everything about life, so YouTube has been a good substitute :). Hehehe...that and MaryuJanes Farm farmgirl sisters....
