Hello Farmgirl Sisters,
Just wanted to say I am praying that anyone in "Sandy's" path stays safe, and that we dont have too much damage. I know the media loves to hype things up, but I do think this is going to amount to some damage, and power outages for sure.
Glad I have all of my farmgirl skills, which have helped me to prepare.
To all here in the NorthEast, and anyone on the Eastern coast, please do what you can to stay safe.

Hi all -
Finally got our power back today - thank goodness! We are better off than most because we have a generator and had enough fuel to keep it going so we were warm and had water. My heart goes out to so many who have so little. Praying all the rest of my farmgirl sisters are OK - please continue to keep us posted.

I was finally able to get gas today, thank goodness- I was down to 1/8 of a tank, and I am assuming that school will be back on tomorrow so I need gas to bring the kids to school (one to the High School and one to the Middle School) then to drive to work and then pick them both up from school. I hate being so reliant on gas, but here on Long Island you are pretty much up the creek without a paddle if you dont have a car. I feel so lucky, I only had to wait for 1 hour to get the gas I did. They were limiting you to only 10 gallons per vehicle, but that will get me through mid week when hopefully this shortage will subside, and we can resume some sense of normalcy.
This whole situation is so bad, and this is only the beginning of what will be a very long road to recovery here in New York. We are now due to get a Noreaster on Wednesday, so praying that it will not be that bad. I dont know how much more people can take. Still over 1/2 million here on Long Island alone with no power.

AMEN Nini!
I was begining ot loose all faith in our "elected officials" and those who truly do hold the power to help others. I am so glad that someone came to their senses, about the crazy idea of actually holding the marathon, and cancelled it. The whole idea was really a slap in the face to anyone and everyone in the affected areas.
Today, a local charity known as Lighthouse Mission, set up various drop off point right in our neighborhood, where you could donate food/clothing etc. I had several bags of clothes from the kids which I was saving for donations, so we dropped those off, along with a big bag of non perishable food items. It felt SO good to finally be able to help in some small way.
Praying for all those still in the dark with no electricity and no heat- it is starting to get COLD here, and for the latest gas crisis to subside. I fear that this gas crisis could turn very ugly very fast.

I just read that Bloomberg canceled the marathon. Thank God. Now they can pool all their resources where they are truly needed most. Unfortunately, this means no marathon until next year. Despite the economic loss, which is most unfortunate, I truly feel it's going to be a very small price to pay when you consider all those who they can help and all the lives that could be saved. :)

what is the USA coming too, scary people eating out of dumpsters, our government helps other countries in times of crisis what about our own people! I agree is is heart breaking we treat our own this way. I am afraid of what people will do when things do come to a head, I have feeling there will be on respect for each other. Prayers go out to all in New York for their safety. |

Heard from Joan (Simple Living) who lives on Staten Island, they are fine but where her Mother lives it is under water, they are just happy she is alive and everyone is alright, her mother is 85 so she is scared like everyone else. Her Mother is at her Sisters house now.
Continued prayers for everyone, Laurie, Nini and everyone's family, if there is anything I (we) can do for any of you please let us know.

Bless your soul for your insight! Yes- to all that you said!
As for shelters etc, there are Red Cross Shelters still set up, and they are offering hot meals (lunch and dinner) here on Long Island, in several different locations.
To sum it all up- it is just a MESS. I wish there was more that I could do to help others, I feel so helpless. I am one of the lucky ones that has electricity etc. I personally know a number of people who have lost everything including their homes.
Problem now, is that I dont even have fuel in my car to drive anywhere to volunteer! Ugh, I know the expression that things will get worse before they get better but its really starting to come to a head here on Long Island.
Prayers for all continue.

Good morning, girls!
Mary Beth, yes! We're fine. Thank you for asking! Heard from both of my parents, too, and they fared well. Dad did experience some flooding, downed power lines and damage from wind sheer, but he sounded really good - strong, actually - so I am happy. My Mom's doing good, too. All is well. And our best man who lives in Brooklyn and is an attorney in NYC emailed this morning to say they are all well, but their neighborhood took quite a hit. He didn't say much more than that, though. I'm sure he has his hands full right now. I'm just very thankful they're okay. :)
Jill & Laurie - I am SO with you. I was watching the coverage about the marathon on Good Morning America this morning, and it just breaks my heart to think that people are suffering so much and they will be supplying the marathon with what they need. I'm sure that it's a matter of getting businesses up and running and trying to help the economy from taking an additional hit, as a lot of people have a lot invested and are counting on that income. But what about the people who are suffering and still so desperately in need of relief?! It's incomprehensible! People treat their dogs better than that!
I was also watching another program where a lady was just BEGGING and crying for water, food, generators - whatever could be sent - because they were elderly, it's cold, and they are dying. It absolutely broke my heart; I cried. The people feel forgotten, like they are nothing. That is so wrong. I do understand the magnitude of what the city is facing, but I am outraged at the way it seems, anyway, that people are not truly THE priority! Take care of those in need first, THEN think about reinstating normalcy and boosting the economy with events, etc. What are they thinking?! I would love to be able to give the "powers that be" the benefit of the doubt, but geez, it sure doesn't look good. There just HAS to be more to the story than this - they can't really be this callous, can they?
As far as the generators getting the gas pumps running... I do believe they should do whatever they can, absolutely! But from what we were watching on t.v. yesterday, there are thousands of vehicles waiting in line for gasoline for hours on end, and then one little fuel truck pulling in to fill the tanks. Is there even enough fuel getting out there? And isn't there still an entire portion of the city without power - shouldn't they be using the generators to help those people? And why aren't they airlifting more supplies to people or getting them out and putting them up in shelters? I haven't heard much about that at all, but I did hear that some people are stranded because the bridges aren't safe - no one can get in, nobody can get out. Gridlock. My goodness, there has to be a better way.
And the police force.. Oh my. They were reporting that tensions are high amidst those who are knee deep in the aftermath. What is the next step, then, if they don't provide for those in need? Think about it! The last thing they should be doing is supplying protection for a marathon... PEOPLE - RESIDENTS - are going to need protection and the assistance from the police force... it should not be about the possibility of more chaos from a marathon right now. Ludicrous. Can it really be so complicated to think through?
And the worst part? Brace yourselves, girls - they are claiming there is a nor'easter on the way, due to come up the coast next week. Mounds of snow coming that will make this all the worse! I feel so bad for everyone and pray that they will get their act in gear to aid those most in need.

My thoughts exactly. I find it very hard ot believe that they will actually hold the marathon. Mayor Bloomberg needs to step in and just say NO.
I have to say that if they do hold it, it will be the most disrespectful act towards mankind that I have ever seen.
Please pray that these people come to their senses. Its just the most ridiculous thing to even comprehend.

Has anyone been listening to Glenn Beck about the marathon that is going to be in NY this weekend. How can they do a marathon when a lot of the New York people are homeless, no water and food! With the generators that are coming into run the marathon why cant these be used to run the gas pumps for people to get gas? The extra police they are going to have to put on to run the marathon why cant this be used to feed people, and what about electricity they are going without what is going on in that state! |

Todays update:
Our latest crisis it that there is NO GASOLINE to be found anywhere. If one out of 20 gas stations actually has any gas left there is at least a 2-3 hour wait for it. It's a mess to put things mildly. People are starting to get very frustrated and loose their patience with one another. Its downright scary.
Each and everyday there are more and more stories of total devastation all around.
I have seen things like this on the news before, but never actually lived it. It is simply unbelievable.
Please pray for patience for people, that they can try and find kindness from within, and to treat others as they would want to be treated themselves.

Back at work today where I can be in touch with the world. Not much has changed since yesterday. Schools closed the rest of the week- we will see if they open Monday. Some power slowly coming back on, but the roads are very dangerous because of so many traffic lights out- even major intersections are out and many have no police to direct traffic. Power lines still down, transformers, trees that are fallen but suspended from power lines, so you have to be very careful getting around.
I just want to say that I am truly lucky and Blessed, and I am praying and doing whatever I can for those that, were not as fortunate as I was with this storm. Thankfully,the govenor has mandated that all hurrican deductibles are being waived, (since technically the SUSTAINED winds were not over 75 MPH), so at least that will make the difficult process of rebuilding a little bit smoother for everyone.
New Jersey took a direct hit and its hard to believe the devastation. There are mandatory car pools in place for anyone trying to get into Manhattan. A mess all around- but New Yorkers are tough and we will get through this, just like we always do.
Thank you all for your continued prayers for those who need it most.
I sure do miss being able to chat with y'all more often!

Just checking in.....
I am at work now- where there is electricity and internet. I feel so disconnected from the world, since we do not have any cable/phone/internet etc at home.
Just wanted to let y'all know we made it through the storm. Minimal damage at my home, but all around there is devastation.
