I don't want to get into a political argument or name calling or what ever, but I'm just saying on ALL sides, that I wish we could all bring down the level of hate and name calling and have a more genteel political atmosphere. Frankly, I'm starting to be afraid of all sides! Makes me want to go live in a cave!

Manners, ladies and gentlemen, manners!

I agree that too much information is better than none or worse still being dictated too! My husband came here from Iran in 1975. He is very well informed about politics and reads or watches everything he can to stay that way. We both feel that it is our duty to vote in every election. We are very liberal but keep our opinions to ourselves. We love that this country allows everyone to have their own point of view. Folks just need to remember to stay informed, be passionate and keep it polite!

My husband told me the presidential debate tonight was getting out of hand. One candidate talking over the other, voices getting louder... My husband decided that was it and he turned the TV off.

Well Mara, you do have a point, being a news and internet addict, I would go absolutely bonkers not knowing what was being said and going on in the world and I DO value free speech even if I'm aghast at the manners and nature of it ;)

Yes, there is negativity. But let's remember that in the first two centuries of our nation's lifespan, elections were often literally a slugfest! The truth made its way -- if it got out at all -- so slowly that elections often had already taken place before people learned of it. Today, the glut of information and avenues for commentary about it are so widely, easily and instantly available that it has affected how election campaigns play out. I would rather have this free flow of lies, bigotry, backlash, investigation, and counter-proposals whirling around us ad nauseam than to be cut off from the dialog altogether, no matter how nettlesome it is -- and you're right, it IS!

Kristina, I was not so much speaking about politics as I was being appalled by the incivility of it all. It's ghastly and horrible at all levels and sides to me.

I thought "politics" were not allowed here. I had a post deleted because of it.

Yep! I'm a teacher, and it scares me to death to think what my students are learning from this.

I just hope it dies down on facebook after the elections are over. So many dear friends whose posts make me want to cringe...or block them. Whichever side wins, I'm afraid the sour grapes and contrariness will just keep on going.

Cant wait until November 7th, when my mailbox will not be inundated with political flyers, every other phone call I get wont be for a politcal candidate, and the radio will actually play MUSIC again instead of hosting mud slinging contests!
UGH!

My husband and I went to a marriage retreat once and they talked about arguing fairly means rather than attacking, using "I" statements. I wish this would apply to politics. Just stand up there and say "I can do this, I won't do that." Keep the other person totally out of the statement.

What I find really upsetting are the automated political phone calls that spew nothing but negativity.

Agree! Much more could get accomplished with give and take and far less hate and unkindness!
