Is this the plight of small town/rural America?

I had to run up to a local farming community...and while there decided to drive around.. yaya, I know that gas is almost $4 a gal... but,,, you just never know what you are gonna see...

I posted a couple more pics on my blog...
We live on the fringe of wheat/hay farming land... and there are about a dozen rural farm communities around us.... some look like ghost towns while others have learned to capitalize on their ruralness with lots of main road Vintage/antique shops & quaint eateries... but for many, other than the highway running through the 'center' of town,,, there isn't much to attract people to stop and visit.
It's sad to see some of these small towns just dry up, leaving only a few residents,,, and building just melting into the earth.

I love keeping my camera in my purse, you just never know when you will see an interesting building.

I would love to live in a town like Whistle Stop on "Fried Green Tomatoes"! Love those little towns with the neat old buildings with charm!

My grandparents lived in a small southern Illinois town. It had two churches, two taverns, a family grocery, and a funeral home. Finally even the funeral home had to close. I have no idea what's left there now.

My town has a population of about 23. My son is literally the only child in it.

Oh how I wish I could travel across the USA documenting rural cities via my camera....hmmm, I just might have to hook up my vintage trailer next summer & peruse the back roads of rural America....
