Went thrifting on Saturday and came across this...It's Swedish (marked by number/symbol and painted "Made in Sweden" and I am wondering is it a luminary? There is a little raised area in the center (to hold the candle?) and the holes along the side go all the way around it is squat and low....It looks like it has never been used.

I am not familiar with candle luminaries, but thought maybe this is a type of one?

What do you think?

What a neat thing!! You know I always wondered why those little candles were called tea lights! That is so much nicer than my guess lol! My Grandma would of known that right away!

I have a solid white tea pot from Portugal that fits very nicely indeed! As soon as I can find a calm moment I am going to give myself a little tea party complete with scones-LOL!

Thanks ladies for all the comments-I knew I'd find an answer here...

Neat! I looked up and found that tea lights were used in Japan for a special ceremony and the candles were used to keep pots warm, hence the name. If yours is much bigger than a large gravy boat, I bet it's for tea! You could put a pretty solid color tea pot on top if you can't find anything to match.

Do a search under "teapot warmer". Maybe that is why the little votive candles are called tea lights....

Sorry I didn't check this conversation earlier! I have one of those (different design) that I got from Netherlands--at the size your's appears to be, it should have a matching teapot somewhere in the world. You put a candle in the bottom part to keep your tea warm.

Hi Melody,
I have only seen them a couple of times in the states, mostly by Danish companies. I looked for you, at Dansk, but didn't see any there anymore. But I did find several on Ebay. I searched under "heated gravy boat" or "gravy boat warming". There were a lot of electrical ones, but I did see several tealight varieties.

Good luck, let me know if you find one. (Or a gravy boat to go on top of yours).

I have had two of them in the past, designed to hold a teapot. One was copper with a punched folkart design, made by Pfaltzgraf. The other was round clear ribbed glass with a removable pierced metal lid, made in the forties or fifties. Look for them at thrift stores.

Well heck yeah....That's what it is!

Thank you Nicole! I think the place I bought it at will be open until the end of October (Fri-Sat) so I am going back to see if the other part is there-Wish me luck!

P.S. Nicole...Is there somewhere I can order one of these? I just love it!

Here ya go, Melody. :)

Mine is a small version and plain, but they come in all colors and sizes. It's a typical Scandinavian kitchen piece.

Oh NO! I have half a gravy boat holder-Bummer....You know I don't think its ever been used-No trace of tea light wax and when I picked it up at there wasn't anything resembling a boat anywhere to be seen otherwise, I would have snapped it up-Darn it!

Nicole I'd LOVE to see a photo of yours!!!

I think I know what it is! Scandinavians used tea lights before they were used here in the states. I think it is a tea light holder, for sure, but I think it is the base to a heated gravy boat. I have one. The tea light goes in the middle ring, and a round gravy boat with a handle goes on top. The hole in the side is to keep the air circulating so that the boat doesn't scorch. I got mine in Denmark. They eat sauce with EVERYTHING. :)

No clue, but it sure would work with a little candle. Cute find!

I think Tina is right...it looks like an aromatherapy diffuser. The ring is filled with water and a few drops of aromatherapy oil, herbs or spices. The candle warms it up and diffuses the scent.

victorian airfreshener, for lack of a better word..., the well around the inside bottom was used to put perfume in, and a candle in the middle to warm the perfum, the hole on the side is for air flow, so the scent filled the room...

I declare it to be the bottom half of a potpourri pot. tealight would go in the middle.

The "Made in Sweden" black mark is strategically placed over a GREEN hand painted mark of some kind plus there is a number imprinted into the ceramic kind of mark...I just don't have a clue what this is! Frustrating....

Hmmm.. you've got me stumped, Mel! At first glance, it kind of looks like a glass globe from a kitchen light fixture.. but with the holes around the side, I'm thinking that's not the case. It also looks like it could be a base for something, like some sort of feeder or something. Hmmm... It ought to be interesting to see what the farmgirls come up with! I can't wait to find out!
