For some reason, our farm gravitates people to break down here. We've had so many people, including a poor kid driving to pick up his date for prom. However, not all break downs are comfortable to us. Meaning, the people are often shady. We often have to put our instincts to the test, when someone just shows up off the road out here. Then again, it could be me in that truck needing help.

Today, a truck is sitting right out front, by the corn field. It's been there since hubby pulled out for work.

We always have to put up a guard to watch over whoever it is, considering a person could be watching our routine. I don't like to leave when a person is out there, and they haven't knocked on the door for help, and a tow truck hasn't shown up. The back window is tinted very dark, so I can't see if they are still in the truck either. I let the dogs out and had to scream to keep them from running across the road.

They are just a very short walk from the door too. Most people either ask us if it's okay to leave the vehicle, or ask if they can push it into our drive for a tow, or whatnot.

We are surrounded by corn right now too. Anyone else deal with this? We, unfortunately, live on a 2-lane country highway.

I've also had people run out of gas and ask us for it. We look like we farm crops, but don't. And often wonder if they simply stop to see if we keep gas on the farm.

These "break downs" often cause us to consider all types of possibilities.

When these things happen, I wish hubby and I spent more time this month with target practice, or some extra boxing in the garage.

Some people out here (especially the really rich ones) have "driveway alert" systems so they know when someone has turned into their property at whatever spots they place the sensors. Apparently they don't pick up deer, bears and whatnot, just vehicles. Maybe it's based on weight, I don't know. We can hear the gravel crunching half a mile away, so it's pretty hard to sneak up on us :) but scofflaws aren't known for doing things by the book, are they?

In any event, if you live "out there," you've got to be alert -- not paranoid, just alert -- and know how to protect yourself when you must. If you have a gun, practice with it often and keep it clean.

Kristina, I sure hope they are gone by now and there was no incident. We have an open line to our sheriff because there are shady people out here all the time. Our friends across the road a ways also keep the sheriff informed. You just can't be too careful these days. Please, stay safe!!

Winonna,
If it is on a night when hubby has class, I lock the gate.So if they want to get to my door, they have to walk all that way. One draw back to having a well insulated home, you can't hear what is going on outside.

Welp, I don't know what happened to my widdle post. I'll try again...

We once had the heating fuel guy fill up our tank, knock on the front door before we noticed he was here. Hubby and the dogs were upstairs and didn't hear anything. I happened to walk through the house and saw him start to leave the deck after knocking. So, now, we are way more attuned to the noises around here. We had just moved here and missed the signs.

ADT is pretty funny!

I've had that happen too. I don't know anyone is here till my dogs start barking like mad. Once, the heating fuel guy came, filled up our tank, knocked on the door and only because I was walking through the house, did I notice him! That kind of scared me! Hubby was home, as was the dogs, but they were upstairs. We had just moved here and found out then, you can't always hear what's going on.

Now, we're WAY more attuned to what's going on around us.

ADT, that's pretty good AND funny!

Kristina, I am sure this has resolved itself by now. Hope you get a break from the breakdowns.

Like one of the ladies said, most people have cell phones these days. Please don't let anyone in the door dear.

Yes there could be a meth lab close. I think you should get the cops to check out the vehicle too. Winona I have a 5 mo old doxie. I had never had one before. Yes they are so fearless. Your post made me chuckle. My daughter was just saying something like that last week or so. They really could at least keep someone at bay till one could get their gun. But one better be prepared to use it cause some kook on meth will try to take a gun away from someone. Be safe Kristina.

If this is a regular thing, are you sure there isn't something illegal going on in nearby woods or something like that? I would for sure call the Sheriff's office and have them check it out.

Or you could take your dog out with you to do some target shooting where they'd be sure to see you. BTW, I love the sign Kathryn's neighbor put up!

We live at literally at the end of our road. You have to turn around in our drive way. When we first moved in we had a man chase another young man into our drive way are 2 am because the young man was attempting to break into the other man's house. We've had people hunt one our property without permission. We've even had blueberry harvesting crews wanting to park equipment in our yard for various reasons. We were broken into one month before we were married. All the stuff stolen was mine including the jewelry I was to wear on my wedding day. Yes, been there many times, and still doing that. Besides having a dog or geese on hand, post your home with no trespassing signs and get a gun and learn how to use it. Out here it could take 30 mins or more if our game warden who lives 2 miles from us is not home.

I have a cute little pistol and know how to use it. Then again, everyone out here has one and does, too. My Dachsies are the best because they are loud and totally fearless. I'd rather have a small herd of Dachsies to tackle the bad guys than one big dog. One dog can be put out of commission but a herd of Dachsies?? No way and they don't quit. There were bred to go to ground and kill badgers.

Anyway, call the sheriff and be sure to check all around your house, not just the front from where you can see their pickup. Doors and windows locked, too.

I'd call the police. We live about a third of a mile off the two lane country road and you can't see our house so if someone comes up, they would have a reason and we'd know they were coming. It we aren't expecting them, I'm very careful. We haven't taken down the sign at the start of our driveway "Beware of dog!" even though she died several months ago. These days, you can't be too careful.

Call the sheriff, if that vehicle has been there more than 1 hour with no sign of people, get the authorities out there immediately. Let the deal with it, that is what you pay taxes for. Also, everyone has a cell phone today, why are they bothering you?

We have a sign on our gate, "Warning: Attack geese, enter at your own risk" there is also a "Beware, Honey Bees on this property, will attack if the hive is threatened"

Yes, we live in a rural subdivision, 500 homes on 700 lots, 7 miles out of Magnolia, and most of our problem is bored kids, but those two signs work. It is amazing how many people are afraid of geese.

There is another sign on a gate about 5 miles from us, "Don't worry about the dog, owner has a 38 and knows how to use it"

I let our black lab out this morning, and of course she saw the truck and ran after it barking. I was in my PJ's and screaming for her to stop. She was about to cross the highway, but I hope the heard her barking, who ever they are.

This is when you know you need a really good gaurd dog. Even if he just looks menacing but will just jump all over them. They don't know that. I have a Yellow Lab named Bubba. He is a little iffy on whether or not he'd actually attack someone. But it's nice to know that people are a little leary of getting out of their vehicle when he's out there. I like knowing that he's out there when someone does drive up that I don't know. So keep your dogs out. And get a good dog that growls and barks. Bubba usually will jump on the car door, then pee on all 4 tired before anyone ever gets out.
