Okay....today I experienced something I have never encountered before.

First of all our house is over 110 years old-I am in the process of painting every bedroom upstairs-Not an easy task! Today, while painting DD's door from the inside-milli-seconds before the episode, I noticed a peculiar smell-kind of like wet, rusty, nails, (iron-like)and I actually paused and thought "What is that smell?" and then almost immediately while holding the door handle(original glass door knob and hardware-I was painting around it) the door was suddenly closed-HARD-My hand was still on the door knob!

I sat down quickly letting go of the door knob and thought "What was that???"

I was alone in the house and No it wasn't breezy enough to close the door hard like that-And, during this really quick episode-I felt resistance when I was holding the door knob almost as if someone was gently tugging on the other side.

Weird huh?

My question is...prior to experiencing paranormal activity is there an ODOR that presents itself?

I feel a little foolish, but I am really curious about this...

Talk to me ladies-

Laura,

After reading your post I thought I should respond in a courteous and intelligent manner and I just wanted to say that I respect you and your beliefs, but they are not my beliefs.

There is no such thing as ghosts, but there is such a thing as evil angels. Satan is no dummy and he has been around for thousands of years. He wants to deceive us into believing the same lie that Eve did and that is "you will surely not die" Gen 3:4. The dead are in their graves awaiting the second coming of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. 2 Exceptions are Enoch who was translated to heaven without tasting death and Moses who died and was later resurrected and taken to heaven. There is also evidence in scripture that some righteous folk were resurrected when Jesus was raised from the dead. Please Melody consider what I am saying and do not become infatuated with these events. Call on the name of Jesus and believe in his awesome power to banish these deceiving spirits from your home and your life. Through his strength you can take dominion. He will also surround you with courage so that you will feel no fear if there are any future encounters. Rest in your home and believe that you are being protected by the Almighty creator of the universe. Take heed to not open any doors to these spirits for instance ouija boards, mediums, bad tv, etc....or trying to communicate with them in any way. They are stronger than you and they aim to ruin your life, but God is stronger and even a small child can banish them easily by just calling on the name of Jesus. It may take more than once, but chances are good if you pray right away you will have no more problems with them. My little learning disabled daughter was plagued by spirits for many years. The 2 fold reason being that Satan feeds on who he thinks is weak and my father was married to an evil person who sort of cast a spell on her. We had about a year and a half of being harassed by a spirit that looked like (I kid you not) Darth Vader. I saw it. Also the bed lifted and shook one night. My daughter had night terrors. She would sometimes try to hurl herself through windows. I took her to Drs. about it and got no help. She was only 3. Finally one night I prayed with her. She was 4 at the time and told her to stand up to it and call on Jesus. She did and it immediately stopped. Never to return. She's 30 now. She has a very keen understanding of spiritual things and the gift of dreams. She was miraculously healed several times as a baby. She is a testament to Gods healing power physically and spiritually. Which is probably why Satan would love to destroy her. Maybe you have something extra special to offer the world and that's why the devil has it in for you, or maybe he thinks for some reason you are an easy mark. Either way it need not be your problem. Pray and take dominion over your home and life and all will be well. I am going to send up a prayer for you dear sister and child of God.

I've never smelled anything which I can recall but have had episodes of seeing things. Mainly black shadows and mists.

There was a time a friend and I went to the cemetery (I posted about it on here) and we actually have a voice recording of a man telling us he wasn't in a grave. The grave was sunken in, about a foot. The lady who caretakes the place told us she has seen footprints leading away from the grave, never to it. We had cool-ish winds go by us and our batteries, which were new, went dead in a NY minute. It was great!!

Melody~

We also have an old home, 112 years old, and hear, smell and see all kinds of things. We have a couple of friends. One is my mamaw that passed a few years ago. She doesn't visit often, just when she wants to voice her opinion about something I've done. There's defiantly a smell that comes with her. It's an old-lady, musty cat smell haha. Then we have our full-time resident who we call Peeves. He is a pain in the butt. Stays up all night banging around, moves stuff especially tools, jingles keys or something. You name it he does it. He isn't creepy. He creeps out visitors though.

I love your little boy story. Very sweet! Now what happened upstairs, I would find unnerving. Like the other girls mentioned, the smell doesn't resonate with me well either. But really the question is how did you feel while this was happening? Did you feel threatened or seriously uncomfortable? I know it sounds crazy to talk to the unseen, but it helps. It really does. Peeves and I have had a couple of talks about rules and boundaries. He doesn't pester me like he used to. He does still aggravate the kids some. As long as you don't feel intimidated or scared of what is in your home, call on it and have a talk or wait and have someone with you when you have the boundary talk.

Hugs~ Melanie

Well, Melody, I guess from all the stories that you are not alone (in more than one sense)! I never felt any impending harm from my experience and after awhile I started being a little nostalgic about it. Very interesting and kind of eerie all at the same time. Makes you wonder about what is really out there!

Oh, yes smells can be around with paranormal expeirences. Also variing degress of light and cold/hot. I've had all these experiences. They started when I was a young girl growing up in a house that was 75 years old back in 1963. From what I understand the house is still standing. My experiences started when I was 8 yrs. old in that house. Smelled wood (like being sawed) when I was reading Black Beauty up on the 3rd floor. The attic had a door close to were I was and that's were the smell was comming from. Opened the door a saw what I thought was a man dressed in overalls and was doing something to the room. He talked to me and told me his name was George. I wasn't afraid just curious and talked with him several times with my younger siblings. I have had several incidents still. One weird thing is that I have alot of antiques that were in our plantation house in Charleston,S.C. during the Civil War. Have one of many paintings of females. One in particular I look at it and I could be her twin. For many years I wear my hair up the same way she has it done. It's like dejavu. Strange. Since your house is very old and the front parlor was the dentist or close to it, the wet rusty smell could be the smell of blood frm the dentist office and with the painting your just stirring things up. Do'nt be afraid, there just letting you know that they are still here. Find out more about the house and if it happens again just talk to them I do. And nothing is wrong with that. Keep us posted. Very interesting.

When I was first married we lived in an old farmhands house on the farm of my Husband's Grandfather. There was the main farm and two farmhand houses. It was from the early 1900's and not very well built like the main farm. I always had weird occurances there including smells. My personal items like brushes and makeup would disappear only to reappear in the middle of the kitchen table a few days later. I frequently had a very strong smell of Rose that would disappear as fast as it came. Not like fresh roses but more like the Rose water perfume or air freshener. It would be so strong that I woould often gasp. My Husband's family had a baby shower for me and I got an opportunity to talk to his Grandmother. She was telling stories of the days on the farm. They had care-takers by the last name of Hollyfield that lived in the other farm hands house. Mr. Hollyfield died at that house so Mrs. Hollyfield moved to the house we lived in as it was smaller. She died of natural causes in the house we lived in. She was telling about how Mrs. Hollyfield never bathed but doused herself in Rose water daily. I heard this and felt goosebumps! I told her about my personal items being taken and returned and the strong smell of roses. She said it's Mrs. Hollyfield letting you know she is there. After finding this out, I was very creeped out every time I smelled the strong rose scent. To this day I can not have any thing that smells like roses in my house!

I agree Caitlin, my scalp crawled with your story!

I have never myself had a paranormal experience (ghostlike) although my mother told my father she saw two little children in the closet. This would be strange as my father built the house -- no history of other families living there. My mom was also diagnosed as schizophrenic, so who knows what she experienced?

There are definitely smells that are associated with paranormal experiences.

My youngest sister had what we thought at the time was an invisible friend that she would talk to and play with when she was very young (from when she was about three or four until she was around maybe eight?). She'd tell us that her friend smelled like the pond where we went fishing.

When she was around seven or so my mother was going through some old photographs and my sister pointed to one and told my mom that it was her friend. It was my great-grandmother's sister who had drowned when she was nine years old. Even crazier - my sister was named after this girl.

So, long story short, yes. Smells are fairly common!

Yes - I've had the smell experience before. When I lived in a house my grandmother used to live in, whenever I was at the kitchen sink, I would smell a very floral perfume smell and then the oven door would open and then close. I was not a fragrance that my grandmother had worn though. And, interestingly enough, after I moved out of that house my sister moved in. We had not talked to each other about our experiences and then, years later, she reported exactly what I had experienced.

First of all, I LOVE your house! I grew up in a Victorian, and still miss it to this day!!

A few months after my Dad passed I smelled his pipe tobacco in our bathroom. He always took his pipe with him, everywhere, even the bathroom. Around the same time I felt someone sit at the foot of my bed one night, I'm thinking it was him. I hope so.

Years ago we stayed at the Star Hotel in Truckee, Ca., a very old building and my husband hung his keys on the back of our room door and they didn't stop swinging for hours. I also had the worst headache of my life that night too and slept with the lights on. Too weird!! As we checked out we told the receptionist what had happened and she said people see a little girl in period clothing all the time. Infact, a reporter came to do an article on the old hotel and took pictures. When he got them developed(before digital)the little girl was looking at him from an upstairs window.

Yours are very interesting stories!! Please keep us posted. This is a fascinating topic! Hugs, Lu

The house is OLD-built we figure around 1898-1904 from looking at tax records and not too, too far from the shores of the Bay of Green Bay-We have a beautiful little park that we walk or bike to-There are a lot of lumber baron's homes the next street over. Ours was built by "the carriage" driver of one of the founding fathers of our little town. He must have made pretty good money-enough to have a maid-we have a separate maid entrance off the dining room that leads upstairs to the maids room (currently my office.)The same family has pretty much lived here up until we bought it in '94 and from what I have been told sometime around the 30's- The great grandmother of the family developed severe RA at a very young point in her married life (in her 30's)-she was confined to the parlor (our front room) and I was told by a great-grandaughter that they used to "wheel" her out (she was wheel-chair bound after amputation of her legs) into the living room at Christmas.

It must have been a very sad life. When we bought our house there wasn't anything pretty about the house especially that room-it's so different now. There weren't any shrubs in the yard or any flower beds-Nothing to look out at. Oh....and I was told the front room (parlor) used to be a dentists office! There was a door connecting the front room to our living room (I replaced it with a french door...and also the front entrance led into the dentists office.

Here is a very recent photo of all the wonderful light that I have in there now-It is so much brighter than originally and once a relative stopped and she entered through the front door exclaiming "Granny would have loved this!"

Melody,

That is a neat story about the little boy. It makes me wonder why you've only had two incidences in 19 years. I don't know how I feel about "ghosts" but I do find the stories fascinating.

I was thinking the same as Marianne about the blood??? I did mention it because I didn't want to creep you out. Do you know any of the history of the house? I love hearing the history of older buildings and homes.

I grew up in an old house. It's 100 yrs now - my parents still live there. 35 years now. Lots of experiences. When things started happening my parents decided to "talk to the house". Saying we weren't there to harm anyone, they were welcome to stay but please do not frighten the children. Lots of noises, floor creaks, doors opening & closing along with the rolling lock being slid. Saw a dog, my brother saw a shadow man. The Christmas after my Grandfather died we were on the front porch saying goodbye to family -it was snowing - we all smelled fresh roses. Brought tears to our eyes. We thought perhaps it was my Grandfather.

My neighbor lives in a Montgomery Wards house down the block. Since they started remodeling. LOTS of activity has been happening. I don't know if I could live in the house with what she's been telling me. My dd has slept over there and plays there a lot. She's seen a mist traveling from 1 room to another. It doesn't seem to bother her.

Melody,
I have read of many paranormal events having a smell associated with them. Would the rusty nails kind of smell like blood? I know that sounds spooky, but that is what came to mind when you described the smell....

I think the rice pudding story sounds charming and I like your reasoning about what brought the little boy to you.

As long as things as calm, do you feel ok with the happenings? I think it is fascinating. Of course, it isn't happening in my house.
Good luck

Emily,

We've lived here almost 19 years...Only one other incident when we first moved in. I was cooking Rice pudding (first time ever) and standing at the stove-I felt a rush (like someone running by me) looked up from the stove and saw a little boy in period turn of the century clothing standing by the chimney watching me cook-I kind of caught my breath and then he was gone. I figured he smelled me cooking his "favorite" dessert and came racing into the kitchen! Weird huh? That was the only other time I have experienced anything like it. Both involving SMELLS-What's up with that?

A remodel/fix up is suppose to stir up paranormal activity. I had experiences back in my house in Ohio. Never had a smell. Saw a black shadow.

Some people claim to smell things. Like perfume sometimes.

Keep a journal.

I've never experienced anything like this, but I was reading up on it online. People who have claimed to have paranormal experiences claim to smell different scents. Sometimes perfume or cologne. One even said that a mechanic had passed away and people said to have smelled oil or grease. It would be interesting to do some research on the house and the people that lived there. How long have you been in the house and have you had anything else interesting happen?
