Out of the blue this morning my MIL emailed my DH and offered to gift us a 1980 Winabago. She'd even have it delivered to our property! She lived in it for a short time and fixed quite a lot of the big ticket items - new holding tank, new tires, AC works, gas stove and oven etc etc. But it looks as if there is some engine repair issues that may need to be addressed. And since this wasn't an expected investment, I'm gonna have to wait a while for some cash to fix it. Until then it would be sitting in my side yard, usable but perhaps not moveable. I see potential... I also see um downsides.... is it worth it? What would you do? I know its not a cool vintage trailer... can you even go "glamping" in a Winabago?

Thanks! My husband and I were talking about it and I think he decided we should just rip out and replace all of the paneling. That way we can replace it with stuff I like better, but more importantly, then we don't have to worry about that spot of mold as much. Our friends came and took a look, and agreed it looked in really good shape and had a lot of potential. I'm getting excited for all the possibilities!

Yes, you can but you need to use a stain blocking primer needs to be used first. In your situation, I'd also make sure it had mold inhibitor. I'd also pick a primer or have it tinted the same or similar shade that you'll be using as the final coat. Good luck...I think you'll find it all worth it and I, as well as many other Farmgirls, are jealous of your gift.

It arrived today! They actually drove it the 4 plus hours to get it here. I'm going to take that as a good sign that we might be able to travel with it. Its gonna need some work though first. My MIL left quite a lot of stuff in it so after she left my husband and I started to clean it out. Bunch of trash, some stuff for GoodWill... We found one spot of mold and in the same area was a hole/ exterior damage. My husband said he'd get that taken care of before the fall rains hit so it doesn't get worse. It has a lot of potential but its gonna take a lot of sweat equity. I'll post pictures once all the personal belongings are removed. Does anyone know... can you paint over paneling?

That sounds like a great deal! I have lots of fun memories from te 80's of playing in a good old Winebago! :) I hope your kids get such happy memories too!

Thank you everyone for the comments! My husband and I talked about it at length yesterday and late last night finally decided to say yes. Thank you Winnie for commenting about the insurance - that was actually one of my first questions too. When our family went camping this last summer, my husband commented that he really wanted to do more camping with the kids but with his back issues, sleeping on the ground was making it hard on him. This was actually a great opportunity. We aren't the type of people to take vacations to far off destinations, we tend to stick rather close to home. Even with the added insurance costs and the really bad gas milage, my husband said it was a doable venture if we count it as part of the vacation budget. As for the engine repairs, he thinks him and a couple buddies from church might be able to fix it up and keep the costs lower. I figure I'll let him figure out that stuff, and I'll worry about making it look pretty. He talked to his mom a bit more and the motorhome is currently at my husbands grandmothers home and they are trying to clean up the property for when they eventually have to sell the property. His mom has no where else to put it and figures we'll get more use out of it. It sounded like she didn't want to have to go through the process of selling it. Oh well... for better or worse the decision is made. When we get it I will post some pictures.

You'd have to do some research into how much insurance is and what else needs to be fixed on it to see if you want to make it road worthy. If you're not able to use it as a mobile glamping camper, it would sure make a nice glamper for your back yard. You're getting it for free, and I'm sure you wouldn't need full coverage on it if your not going to be driving it. I've found that the insurance companies around here are good at putting full coverage on a vehicle for the days you need it and then dropping it back down when your not using it.
I don't care if it is an 80's Winnebago.....you could glamp it up and do something really cute with it!
I would write a list of pros and cons and take into account your finances to see if it is an investment you really want to take on. Let us know what you decide!

The only questions I would have would be what is the cost to my auto insurance to have an old Winnebago should you get it fixed . And what would it cost to fix it and make it useable? Wnnebagos don't get good gas mileage at all so it would be another factor to figure inthe actual usability. If all you can do is use it as a stationary tent, you still have to insure it and deal with it as property. If glamping is what you want to do, I think a tent set up makes more sense because you can take it down and set it up wherever you wish and it won't cost you a dime to insure or pay extra gas to go where you want to go!! I understand the fix it up for fun idea but really a wall tent would be a better investment for a stationary location for backyard glamping. Again, it requires no insurance or gas to enjoy all the year long. It sounds like the MIL wants to unload it so she can take it off her insurance and property costs for something that is useless as an investment. I would proceed with caution on this one. The devil is in the details!!

We plan on getting a motorhome next spring, hopefully, and travel and glamp all over the coutry in a couple more years. You can gussy a motorhome up just as nicely as a camper or a tent. Have fun and let your imagination kick in!!!! Love to see pictures.

I'd say YUP! YESSIRREE you can "glamp" in it! We used to have a motorhome but sold it a long time ago, but in retrospect I could have "glamped" like crazy in it, even if it was just in my yard . . and invite my girlfriends for a glamping slumber party. I don't have a trailer now but my daughter and I tent glamp (we have more than one thread with comments and lots of pics of our adventures in OUTPOST).
I believe you could have a wonderful "glamping" time in your Winnebago and if it can't go anywhere right now you could still have tons of fun with it. And, you could have a slumber party in your yard with your friends. . . make it into a "hideaway . . . I can think all of kinds of possibilities.
