Posted - Sep 11 2012 : 12:08:37 PM On Sunday I attended a local auction about 2-blocks from my home with every intention of bidding and getting a lovely white Vintage French Ladies desk---I was out-bid and instead bought these two beauties!
The yellow cup handled primitive cupboard cost me $40.00 and the long low green cup handled primitive cost me only $10.00! Both are pine and very heavy some of the boards are all one large wide piece of pine. They are turn of the century and don't have a bit of that musty-moth ball smell-Thank goodness!
DH will be sandblasting the brass cup handles that are coated with paint.
I am unsure of what the color should be-I go for the Swedish palette-grays-blues-loden-mustard, but the green one will remain as is-I kind of like that shade and it goes well with the trim above the bead board on my walls-I want to make a cushion that will cover the entire top in a cotton reproduction print from the 30's...
Any color suggestions would be appreciated-
Talk to me ladies...

I decided on a color called "Vintage Bakelite" 3-coats plus 2 coats of Johnson's Paste Wax-which gave the finish a deep warm depth-DH sandblasted the brass "cup" handle hardware (loaded with old yellow paint!) and then coated them with a clear protective finish-secured with "pan" brass screws. I think it turned out really well-
Now on to cupboard #2! I started painting the drawers late this afternoon in a lovely deep shade of paint called "Brick Dust" Photos to follow soon....

Posted - Oct 07 2012 : 03:42:08 AM That is really impressive. I admire you ability. I have never undertaken anything like that. But, my mind wanders ... Your mention of Menards made me miss that store. I enjoyed it more than HOme Depot that we have here in WA. Used to visit it when we lived in SE WI. marianne |

Posted - Sep 20 2012 : 05:05:35 AM That's exactly what I will do! Thank you Diane-Sheesh-How simple is that?
I really didn't want to lose that nice decorative molding right below the top and now by doing what you suggested I won't!
I have the foam, but I'm waiting for some fabric to come in from a barter here on the forum-Hope I have enough to do the top...Will post photos when I'm done.
Thank you again Diane-

Posted - Sep 20 2012 : 04:44:15 AM Great job Melody! An easy way to upholster and pad the top of the red one is: cut a thin piece of plywood a fraction smaller than the top of the dresser. Add foam and fabric and then screw on from under-neath the top of the dresser! Can't wait to see it done.
