We didn't figure there were this many bats in the barn. Look where I wrote "BATS" and look above it on the beam and left and right. Those are all adults.

We are contacting a park ranger and another program director on what to do (if we need to do anything). The babies are still falling down into the goat pens.

I think they just found a poor nesting area, and the babies fell down. My son picked them up with a towel and put them back up for the mother's to nurse. So far, no more have fallen down. I never did get a response back, but the professional could be out of the office too.

It's been very interesting for sure.

Wow! Some bats are becoming extinct. Thank you for not destroying the nesting place and finding out information on what to do. As far as the babies on the floor, doesn't their mother come after them?? Or are dead from falling down?

Wow ! I have to agree that is amazing. I like to watch them fly around in the evening.

Ha ha ha! I said the same thing too, but I had to think about a bit more - slapping mosquitoes while picking wild berries. We have been talking about how everything on earth has a life cycle, such as the vulture to eat the road kill etc. Then we asked "what purpose does the mosquito have?"

Maybe to feed the bats? Having these bats show up sure has made us learn more about them and stir up conversation.

I'm still waiting to hear back about the babies that are falling down.

From what I have read, they each have 1 litter of babies, but I don't know the amount per bat. I'll try to remember to ask her.

Winnie, I agree. I once saw thousands of bats come out of a cave at dusk. So amazing. Beautiful.

Bats around here carry rabies, and most are rabid and do bite, so we have to watch it. I also read that their droppings in large quantities can cause tuberculosis, and other lung problems. They like to live it attics and can get into the smallest cracks of a house or window and come back to the same place year after year. I do not like them at all, and would not take the risk of getting bitten or sick.

That is really amazing. Pretty cool. How many babies do they have? Since it's a maternity colony does that mean the males don't stick around for the birth? Hope you keep posting! More photos, if you are brave enough.

What a true blue farmgirl story! Wow, I think it is really neat to see and learn something about their living patterns! We have bat houses at our university in town and it is quite impressive to watch hundreds of them pour out of the house in late evening to feed for the night.

How neat.
I had one in my house one time and my cat caught it but I got it away from her and put it into a jar, then I took it to the school I worked at then, let the children see it while it was in the jar. It stayed quiet all day and then I took it out to the forest across the street and left the open jar there and it was gone the next day and it had a forest to fly in. It was so cute.

I applaud you for being kind and doing the right thing by consulting professionals and getting information. Some people I know would chase them out or kill them. I had never heard of a maternity colony. That is pretty cool! :)

Yes, I did know that bats eat mosquitoes and insects, and that they eat a lot of them.

I finally heard back on what to do - nothing right now.

We have what they call a Maternity Colony- a group of bats having babies. Cool huh? They will have babies in June and begin to leave the barn in July.

I am just waiting on what to do when the babies fall down into the goat pens again. Not sure what to do with them.

Anyway, if the barn comes down before July, I need to build a few bat boxes to house them in.

Best to leave it to the professionals. If there were only one, a simple net would do it--although you do risk getting cussed out in Bat!

Just don't go out to the barn at dusk! I love watching them fly in the night sky but don't want one too close. Got one caugth in my hair as a kid. Must have been surrounded by mosquitoes!

I don't mind them as long as they aren't showing any signs of illness. They are SO good for your environment :)

Bats are the best, did you know that they eat up to 300 times their body weight in insects every night...they also roost in groups like this "only" if the food supply is abundent to their group size...their droppings are some of the best for natural fertilizer, and is very expensive to buy...you are a lucky girl..
