OH LORDY! my hair had finally gotten down to the middle of my back! and my dark roots were about 3 inches long! sooooo .. while in toledo, i decided to go to the hairdressers for a 'trim' and a 'different hair color' (i do tend to change it with the season!) the hairdresser talked me into a shorter cut (to my shoulders) ... which was o.k. with me because with all the 'bleaching' .. the ends had gotten fried! we decided to do it close to it's natural shade with lots of 'red' tones! WELL .. i was born a blonde ... and that is my soul color ... sooooo ... getting used to this darker shade is not easy to do! BUT .. i HATE the cut! i look like cleopatra or nefrititi (or however you spell her name!!!) it's blocky, and a 'triangle' shape .. and i swear .. i look like i have BROWN DOG EARS around my face! i told him DO NOT CUT MY HAIR 'NORMAL' LOOKING!!!! i want it gypsy, chippy-choppy .. fun and funky! well CRAP! he doesn't 'get fun and funky' .. cuz' it is terribly boring looking (for me!) i swear .. i will wear a brown grocery bag over my head if he does not fix it! i'm going back to him tomorrow with fire and blood shooting from my eyes .. to have him CHIP-CHOP it! i know i am going to end up with much shorter hair than i wanted .. but even i will admit i was starting to look like a demented wild woman!

gosh .. are any of you girls as 'vain' as i am when it comes to your HAIR 'style'?

kristi .. i did go back and got more 'blonde' in my hair and got it cut 'chippy-choppy' it's still to my shoulders .. but i'm actually thinking after all this time .. i might like it a tad shorter!
i'm very pleased with the results of the "RE-DO".

how long has yur hair been growing? does it take forever to dry? even at the longest .. mine dried very quickly .. i have been told that i have 'fine' hair .. but TONS of it! and it has some curl to it which i love cuz' it just goes every which-a-way! how do you mostly wear your long hair?

I know how you feel. I HATE going to salons because they always try to change my hair too. They always want to cut layers or bangs, etc. I have hair to my waist and finally have all my bangs grown out and sometimes I get the urge to cut because I see someone with a really cut 'do' and I feel so frumpy and boring but I'm always glad when I don't and it's so easy to just pin up. I hope everything turns out for you and just look on the bright side...I know it takes a while but it's only hair and it will grow back.

OH Frannie, I hope you're as pleased as I am. And don't need to consider the paper bag. My hair has layers everywhere.... but the bottom layer is the same as when I went in, and as she scrunched it up, gave it body, (actually offered with a laugh to give me 'Texas big hair') and assured me I CAN reproduce what she did, I just went with her judgement. I've known her since about January, and she told me at the end, "Ann, you are NOT a straight hair smooth kind of woman." I responded that no, I'm schizophrenic and she's reuniting my 30 year ago self with the current woman.

Mary Ann, I hear you with those products. I've learned that the ph really has an effect on both skin and hair, and some other interesting stuff. I tend to add one product at a time--timidity! But, I think this hairdresser is innately talented as well as educated about how to take care of hair. Like so many things, there's an art that has to be within. I sure don't have it myself....!

Oh poor Frannie, I so understand! People don't think about it much, but when you get a bad outfit you can change your clothes. But a bad haircut you have to wear 24/7! I used to have a dear friend cut my hair. She was in a little small town shop, and the cuts were cheap. Highlights meant getting your hair pulled through a cap. It was the seventies all over again.

Then one year for Christmas, my hubby gave me a gift certificate to an elite salon and day spa. He thought maybe I'd want something like an herbal wrap or a hot stone massage, but HECK NO I wanted a top quality cut and color! I scheduled with their best stylist and colorist (two different people) and went.

They were AMAZING. I had little hair to live with, but I can't believe how much awesome style they got out of what hair I had!!! I got a color with highlights and lowlights, then a separate shampoo girl washed it out and I sat in a different part of the salon for my cut. This woman was very expensive for a cut, but she cut it three different times in the course of one cut. First when it was wet, then after blow drying, then again. This haircut was flawless, and would just fall into place so easily! I got some of their brand of shampoo, conditioner, styling gel, and hairspray; it was better product than anything I've EVER tried! I went out of there feeling so spoiled.

Now no one else will do. Which is good because I KNOW that when I come out I'll have an absolutely top quality haircut that's extremely easy to maintain, that looks great from Day One. The down side is that they're a bit of a drive (takes about an hour to get there) and they're really expensive. Since I can't seem to leave without products, I've only once gotten out of there for less than $300. But I did find out that those expensive products and haircuts really ARE better than what we can find at Walmart and most salons; I don't know why, but I guess they have more of the ingredients that make them work well. And the stylists absolutely NAIL what it is you want, deal with your individual hair color, texture, and condition, and make it happen on your head.

It's fun way to splurge on yourself. I'm older and my kids are raised, and we're comfortable now; so it's not like I feel like I'm taking food out of my children's mouths. I never would have done it when I was younger. And we wear our hair every single day, everywhere we go....

MJ's hair is gorgeous. Sigh. Mine isn't that thick and will not grow past the middle of my back, so I'm green with envy. I, too, like to look feminine, and am having a revival of skirt wearing these days. Like you, though, I agree it isn't the most important part of us, and the farmgirl who commented that a smile is the best beauty aid (paraphrased) is so right.

Hope your blonde streaks make it a successful trip! If I don't like the results today, my husband will be my future hair cutter--I've been his for the last 29 plus years! And, he certainly won't want to remove too much.

Love,
Ann

your hair dresser sounds delightful .. i love a 'free spirit'. i asked my hairdesser who was hanging over my 65 year olde head how many gray hairs was amongst my 'roots' .. he replied .. "amazing! not a one!" then we all got into a conversation about how lucky we thought women were who went 'instantly gray' ... never have to pay to have their beautiful hair bleached! good luck to you and good luck to me tomorow. (i might be wearing a brown grocery bag over my head for awhile!) ha! not really ... if i have to take the scissors to it myself .. i will .. and will love my funky look. i think just getting the blonde streaks back in it will make me ever so happy! xo

and YESSSS .. i do know that 'hair' is not the most important thing in our lives. but, whether it's cowgirl boots or aprons .. lip gloss or mascara ... i like looking feminine .. i loved reading maryjane's comments on this in her latest magazine. and speaking of HAIR .. doesn't MJ have the most wonderful hair!!!!

OHHHH Frannie, my deepest sympathies and hopes that your new "do" will be what you want. No one wants extra ears. I have an appointment tomorrow!! with a new hair stylest who is going to cut underneath my hair to make it fuller looking. ! And will let you know how it goes. Meanwhile, I've quit coloring that gray. The last several months it was cut with shampoo, soooo it's growing grayer daily. My DH loves long gray hair and has told me since my 20s, so I can believe he means it. Funny-- as traumatic as going rather suddenly gray is for me, he is delighted. My new hair dresser is a flower child, who dyes her own hair blonde-white and wears corn rows. And, she's youngish... should have lived through the 60s and 70s. Would you like her number?

I'm sooo sorry about your hair, Frannie. I haven't had my hair cut for two years(I trim my own bangs-very carefully and with inconsistent results). It's approaching my waist now and I've been thinking I really need to get it cut. But there's something about a bad haircut for any woman that is just a big black rainy cloud over her parade. I think I'll think about it some more.....Maybe if you do post your picture, all your friends on the Farmgirl Connection can rally round and give you helpful suggestions about how to make it better. I think we have all been where you are. I send you sympathy hugs from back home in Kentucky.

Well dear frannie- I decided to embrace the fact that I cannot grow my hair long and went in for a "professional" cut. It was the most awful cut I have ever had. It was super short in front and about an inch and a half longer in back. I looked like I had a mullet. Everytime I went near a mirror I would burst into tears. So I went back to the salon and talked to the manager. She personally fixed my hair and gave me free cuts for six monthes until it was back to normal. It was an awful experience. And I do love the fun and funky look. Funny, I just trimmed my hair this morning. And everyone is like - wow Beth your hair looks great. Sometimes if you want it done right you have to do it yourself!

Hope it all works out ok, otherwise I suggest you remove all the mirrors! Love ya frannie!

Sorry to hear about your delima, Frannie. I think we are all a bit vain about our hair (the scriptures do refer to it as our glory). A bad hair cut is the worst! I agree with Jenny, just leave my hair alone please. Everytime I cut it I end up crying because it is just aweful. I wear my hair long/hippie chic, when I need a trim hubby is the only one I trust. He loves my locks more than I do, so he is very careful about the procedure. Just a bit to tidy it up. Now, I do change my hair color frequently...I love Henna! It is actualy good for my hair and lets me play around with my look a bit.

Awwww Frannie :( I sure can relate! I call that thing around the ears, Oompa Loompa hair(remember those characters in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory?). It's soooo hard to communicate what you want to a new hairdresser.
My bff, & more importantly HAIRDRESSER ;), moved 18 hours away last May! I have a new gal, super nice, but gives me OLD LADY hair *gasp*! Like you, I want a funky "do". I am currently in the process of growing out the latest calamity. My bff is coming for a visit in two weeks and promises to bleach & snip & "jack up" my hair! I think I'm goin' platinum-winter is so long here! I haven't been so excited about a hairstyle in ages! Anyway, I hope you get something fun and more YOU! Good luck!

I can't remember the last time I went to a hairdresser for me.... I have taken the girls...I get a little too intimidated and like Jayne said ..they push a new look on me. I am really boring. Long wavy hair with bangs and I just don't feel happy any other way. I hate layers in my hair, cuz it makes my braids fuzzy, and I don't like it short..so I just cut my own bangs and have my sis in law trim the ends now and then. I get itchy in the winter for a change, but I am always happiest when I leave it alone!
I hope you "get satisfaction" Frannie..it is hard to hate your hair. I have been there!

Hi gals - Frannie, hope it all gets 'fixed up' soon!
I hate going to the hairdresser as they always seem to try and push á new look' on me. I'm terribly boring and just keep it long in a plait. It's like they think it's boring for them to just do a trim. I guess I just like to play it safe - don't mess with it if it ain't broke!!
Best wishes,
Jayne

Frannie- I'm sorry about your horrible experience with the scissors! I know your pain, Sister!! I have very thick, wavy hair that, when it is cut short, looks something akin to a helmet perched on top of my head. Just one big, solid mass. There has been only 1 girl who can cut my hair and have it look perfect. And she doesn't cut hair anymore since she had her fourth baby!! Most others don't listen as I explain how it needs to be cut. Do we not know our own hair? Maybe you should go back WITH your brown paper sack for all to see!
Good luck!!

brenda .. i went to my daughter's hair stylist .. she has long blonde hair and loves a 'neat trim' look .. i've been to him before .. but only for color and 'the teeniest ends cut off and have always been happy .. but this BIG CUT .. is AWFUL!!! i know a 'new do' takes getting used to .. but i know i won't ever get used to THIS ONE! i do miss my gypsy curls already!

Oh, Frannie,

I struggled for 2 years trying to describe the cut I wanted to my stylist. But I was afraid to let her cut it as short as she wanted....

Finally I saw a woman in the mall with MY HAIRCUT!!! I stopped her and asked her, if it wasn't too bold of me, if she would tell me who her stylist was. She was very obliging and told me the name of her stylist and her own name, too. I scooted right over there and made an appointment on the spot, and that's the haircut I have been wearing every since. And yes, it's much shorter than I was letting my original stylist cut it! but I'm much happier with it now.

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands - You shall be happy and it shall be well with you. -Psalm 128.2
