Did I read someplace about why we have so many BIG BIG spiders this year? something to do with the weather? Anyone out there witch or not know anything?

Lorij - thank you so much for the information - I spoke with my parents this morning and it looks like he's not doing so well right now - fever is back and they're taking him back to the "pet ER" today. I somehow am having trouble keeping my hopes high right now. I'll check online for the topics you mentioned.
How awful that someone you love was bitten (actually it's awful that ANYTHING is bitten!), and I am SO glad that they are okay - I'm really having to fight getting a spider paranoia now - I read online that BRs like to live in woodpiles, and we have an entire fence that is a woodpile!!! Yikes!!!

My daughter let out a shriek a minute ago...seems there was a wolf spider under the dining table. Lordy, this thing was big enough to be caught in a mouse trap! Shiver!
Folks around these parts swear by putting chestnuts in corners of your house to repel spiders?? I haven't tried it, but if I see anymore of these monsters in the house I might hang them (the chestnuts) from the ceiling!

I spoke with my mom this morning - she said that at least Angus is eating a bite or two and drinking some water - he just has such a massive wound that it's apparently hard for it to self-heal. I have heard that a plantain poultice can really help - anybody heard that same thing?
We just have so many spiders around here, too - just like you all do - I remember we had those lovely "writers" here a few years ago when we had a 9-acre pumpkin patch. I haven't seen any this year, but we seem to have plenty of others to make up for it. I'm on a run of being spider-paranoid right now because of Angus' bite - I have been catching all of the spiders I can see inside and taking them out to the garden area (they'll probably be back tonight!), but if I see anything poisonous, I'm committed to "dispatching" it to further its karmic journey (and probably affect mine, as well )!

Libbie, I hope that Angus is recovering at home soon. I've seen photos of what can happen and it is a frightening thing. I do know a woman through another board who's puppy was bitten by a brown recluse and she did recover. As far as personal safety goes, I didn't think that recluse spiders came into houses very often. I think they are generally encountered on fallow land.
Wolf spiders though! My dog was barking at something the other day and I realized she had spotted a spider on the ceiling and it was just driving her nuts. Since it was a wolf spider I decided I'd squish it because they seem to like to get into my bed and chew on me. The dog seemed really sad after that though. She ran away and hid.

well now .. ya'll are making me want to squish every spider i see ... even if i 'get' CHARLOTTE! those brown recluses' are truly nasty critters! i did actually see my very first black widow spider this summer .. at the bottom of a trash can. hank showed it to me and i was shocked at how small it was .. and how clearly marked!

I just have to say that three days ago my parents' dog, a huge black lab named Angus (he bears a striking resemblance to the cow!) was bitten by a brown recluse spider - he has spent 3 days and nights in the doggie hospital on IVs and all sorts of things - he has this HUGE, like the size of your hand all the way spread open, lesion on his leg and is just SO lethargic - they still aren't sure he's going to be okay, and he'll probably need two skin (fur?!?!?) graft operations if he makes it through this craziness -- it just started me thinking that maybe I should be cleaning out the nooks and crannies around the house - this is the time of year that spiders like to come in from the cold!

We've had a ton of spiders too! I've had some really big, nasty brown ones!! UGH!! I wish we had more spinning ones instead of the brown ones who seem to make themselves right at home inside my house! EEEK!

I have a writting spider right out side my kitchen window it has be wonderful to watch it . I got to watch it take a grand daddy longleg that was caught in its web and tie it up in to a small ball with its spinning. The next day the Grand daddy long legs(The Ball) was gone I guess it was eaten?

I am terrified of spiders....to a dibilitating extent....but I always offer them harbor in my basement-and they stay there-and I dont go down there- in the Fall and Winter months. They are told through the faeries that if they are caught upstairs they get screamed at and squished....so they just stay downstairs.
We have a lot right now....mostly writing spiders.

The spiders are crazy around here too! I have a HUGE black and yellow writer out by my water spicket (sp?) and everytime I go into the woods I get tangled in dozens of webs. |

Nancy Jo- My grandmother always said that many spiders meant an early Autumn and a cold Winter. I have seen some incredibly huge spiders the past few weeks. Especially the big black and yellow writers. (My personal favorite!) We'll see if her theory comes true! (My mom now says the same thing.)
