Well, just when you think all is going smoothly and you can't imagine that anybody is a creep, you find out that there certainly are creeps and that you have to really keep on your toes to stay ahead of the creeps.

I have been blogging since 2009 and have loved every minute of it. My posts are kinda long, I know, but I figure that if I am only posting twice a week, I should make them worth the time reading!! I also include a plethora of pictures, especially if I am showing a recipe, and so you can imagine the number of pictures posted over the past three years. About a year ago, I acquired PhotoShop CS4 and have loved the extras that it offers in cropping and adjusting light, etc in my photos. I had seen that some people were signing their photos so I started doing the same.

I also have a neat deal at Feedjit.com that shows me a running list of visitors and what country is represented just to help me keep abreast of my audience. The other day, I noticed that I was getting a really huge amount of visitors from a place called Reddit.com so I clicked on the link to see where they were coming from. Lo and behold, there was a big picture of my mother, posted back in 2010 to honor her on her 79th birthday, and there was a caption and story that said to the effect, "My mother after getting news that she is cancer free" with over 200 comments following!!! At least the later comments gave a link to my site and posted that the picture had been stolen from me. I first went back to that post, signed the photos in it and then replaced those pictures. Then I contacted the photo hosting site and let them know that the picture was pirated (it has been removed from the site) and I let reddit.com know the same. Somebody just lifted a picture from my blog!

So the long and the short of it is, sign your photos!! And if you have pictures of your loved ones, do a signed watermark across their face that doesn't hide their face, but makes it impossible to be lifted to another site. I guess we all have to learn the hard way!!

Michele, no, my mother has never had cancer. That was a story totally made up by the thief. However, I have to say that Mr. Thief did me a favor because it seems that somebody on his post discovered that it was a fake and posted a link to my blog to prove it. Now, I've had people from all over the world coming to the blog to check it out and find out what he took. No publicity is bad publicity!!! :-)

When i first read yours I thought Oh No someone had done something like porno with your stuff...thank goodness that was not the case but you are right about how easy it is to take pics off of one site & use....I use alot of my chicken pics on my blog so I don't mind if any get riped off & used...just means someone thinks they are worth stealing...lol...who knows they may become famous....all joking aside yes it can be dangerous if you have pics that can be used in other ways that would turn your stomach if you came across them.....ie the children in the bathtub comment.....what is pure to us can be turned evil & sick to someone else.......also if your mother did servive cancer that is wonderful to hear....Michele'

Okay, I guess I'm not very computer savvy. How do I 'sign' my pictures or put a watermark on them? I have several pictures on my website and I want to make sure that no one pirates them. Ah,lovely. One more thing to worry about.....

Ann, thanks for the website!! Marianne, for sure!! No children. If I post any kids helping me in my projects, I show only hands and arms. Same with most people but I figured my elderly mother's picture - which is just a joy with her laughing out loud - would not be of interest to anyone!! I only use the watermark for original artwork that I post, but everything else has a full-fledged signature across the photo.

This is why I had a FIT when my daughter in law posted a photo of the kids in the bathtub. Too many weirdos out there, too.

I refuse to post pics of people on my blog. Especially since the people in my blog would be my teenagers and my hubs. I recently read another similar story about another blogger who staged a photo as a paid post, then had the photo stolen. Her kids were in it, and deliberately acting up because the photo was staged. Someone cropped out her watermark, then posted the photo. There were actually comments that were left saying bad things about her as a parent.

Make sure you go to freecopyright to get your material copyrighted!

What a shame! Its amazing how some people think! Scary actually. I havve been tinkering with starting a blog, but I have to tell you that I dont think I will post pics of "people", but more of the gardens, animals etc. Then if they steal them it wont matter much.
So sad that you have to think like this.
Be safe!

Yep, Zan. All people have to do is ask. If they want to use a recipe or photo they just need to get permission and then give credit where credit is due. But to take a picture and make a whole different story about it to gain people's sympathy? That's low!!!

This has happened to several people I know. I've heard of a magazine lifting a goat picture from a popular rural lifestyle blogger--not giving her credit or anything-until she called the editor on it and her fans started emailing him by the hundreds to complain!

There have been recipes and other things that I've heard of being lifted from one blog to another..it's funny how rampant these things are because I guess people don't think there's a backtrack to them...but there is!
