Look at this piece of "sea glass" (well, not from the sea, but from Lake Champlain) that I found yesterday on the shore! It's a little glass globe-like thing, hollow in the center, on the side it says Chicago 1892 and on the other side 1492.

Wonder what it was? Interesting! :)

Stephanie is probably right. My husband is a treasure hunter who suggested sending a photo of front and back to treasurenet@prodigy.net with "Ask Mark Parker " in the subject line. Digital photo 300dpi or higher and turn off the "date stamp". Be sure to photo on solid, plain background. It is a neat piece. Please keep us posted on what you find out. Joey

it's interesting for sure! My cat thinks it's a play toy just for her :) She keeps taking it down from the shelf and batting it around :)

If I can give you my two cents, Sheila I think what you have is the top to a glass dish from the 1892 Columbian Exposition (aka Chicago World's Fair). The dedication ceremonies were in October 1892 but the fair didnt open til May of 1893. That's why the 1892 year is on your piece. My parents had an antique business for many years (dad still works for an auctioneer), that's why I have all the info. What a neat find!

My sil makes jewelry from seaglass. It's very pretty and delicate the way she does it.

northern california beaches are not much for sunbathing, they are very rocky and have dangerous currents...that being said, my daughter has found some beautiful "seaglass" on those beaches after some storms, in all colors, shapes and sizes, she has 8 or 9 gallon jars full now from several summers of searching, she plans on making something with them someday,lol...

I think the worlds fair in Chicago was in 1893? How cool to find something like that...Lucky!! It's amazing what you can find on the shore especially after a good storm-That's when I go and scavenge!

P.S. I found a pair of lovely pink tourmaline gold dangly earrings once....

wow! do you think it was once a stopper of some kind or a paper weight? Really a treasure find. Was there a world's fair in Chicago that year? What year was the great fire? I am going to go look online, so you will not have to think about answering my weird questions!

Note: found that the Chicago world's fair was 1893....
