My mom will be 80 in a few weeks. She still works 3 days a week. They moved here last year. She works Tuesday, Wed. and Thurs. Friday through Monday she's sick. Sometimes it starts on Thursday evening. She's been doing this for several months now.

This weekend it started on Thurs. evening. She was nauseous. She could not eat. Friday she had dry heaves really bad for awhile. Then she had chest pains. Step dad gave her some aspirin and got het to bed to rest. Her BP was really high then. They didn't tell me how high. She felt better. But has not been able to eat til today.

I just got to thinking it could be something in her house that's making her sick. Gary is fine though. Could it be mold or something environmental? She does not eat really good. Sometimes very little. And always low fat or no fat and not much meat. I told her I thought she needed more protein. Like REAL meat. And she needs to go to a doctor.

Has anyone heard of this happening? She is fine the days she works. Just when she's home. I also asked her if there is any ventilation at all in the house? It's pretty tight.

So who would they call to come do some testing on the house? I have no idea. Could they call the health department? Or the EPA?

oh kris, i just saw this post. is there new carpet in their home? it is famous for causing those symptoms. i hope it is some thing simple like a hernia keep us posted. if you get no answer then it may be environmental. if i can help let me know there is a company that will test your air. they send bottles you fill. you mail them back and they test for indoor contaminants. they are a large co and reliable sending hugs and a prayer for your mom and family.

My dad is one of "those guys" who tests homes and factories for radon, asbestos, carbon monoxide, black mold and stuff like that.

If it affects one person , it will usually affect both or all people in the house or building - to varying degrees.

I'm glad you didn't mess around and got your mother to a dr. ASAP

I think we'll all be interested to hear what the final prognosis turns out to be . Hope she is ok! Sounds like gall bladder too- I've had two (quite young) friends who had theirs removed with similar symptoms and are fine now.

You must feel such relief to have your mom have a good day on the weekend! Hope she rounds out the weekend with another good day. In my prayers. You deserve a few days of breathing easy!

Mom went to the doctor yesterday. They were there several hours and had blood work and EKG and talked to the doctor a long time. She had mom go to the imaging center for an ultrasound of her stomach. She seems to think it may he gall bladder related. And hyatel (?) hernia. Mom has had that for years and was taking some meds for it. So she put her on something different. She did not think it was heart related either. Her EKG looked good. So she will go back Wed. for all the results. And I saw her today and she was not sick!

Lifting your Mom up in prayer, Kris - I'm glad she's feeling a little better, and that she's going to see the doctor soon. Heart stuff sure can be worrisome, so I'm hoping she gets good news and some peace of mind. :) Hugs - Nini

Glad she is sounding better. It could be several things, but the first that popped in my head was stress/anxiety. With the BP that she told you, she definitely needs to have it checked! Hope all goes well with the doctor.

My mom called about the doctor. She's there Wed.-Sat. So she will go by when she gets off Thurs. and if it's too busy will be there first thing Friday morning. She is going to tell her everything that's going on. She promised she would. Plus get all her bloodwork done whuich she has not had done in a lobg time. I'm sure they will do an EKG. So I will let y'all know what happens. She also said thanks very much for all the great advice and prayers for her.

I also called the place where she worked for so long in S. Ga. Talked to her friend there. Mom and Gary will be going down there in a few weeks so Mary said they will have her a little party with cake and all. She will love that. Also called my brother and told him what's been going on. He and my sister both live in Col. Springs. His 2 kids are there and my sister has 2 of her kids there as well. So they are going to all get together and think of what they can do for her birthday. I wish they could all come up.

Oh, and she talked to her boss this morning. Told him all that's going on. And she does not get paid there. When she first started it was as a volunteer counselor at a non profit counseling center. She was ok with that with the hope of getting a regular pay check in the future. Well, it's been at least 8 months and she only gets gas money about once a month. So her boss is going to see what he can do. He also said it sounds like it's work related and that she needs to work more! Which she can if she wants. She could work 5 days a week if she wanted to. SO I think that's made her feel better knowing she will be getting paid and that she could work more of she wanted to. And get off when she wants as well. So, she feels good about that. And she sounded really good today.

Kristin- My suggestion is not to second guess this and have her seen as soon as possible by her MD. Her BP is way up there and because of her age, there could be any number of other problems. Once the MD has a chance to evaluate what is happening and depending on the outcomes, then you can focus on any environmental questions. But my opinion is that right now the only priority is to have her seen and maybe you can go with her and ask questions as well. Sometimes, people in her age group tend to play down symptoms in front of the doctor and often just present a picture that nothing is really bothering them. Good luck with this one. I know it is hard to get older people to go to the MD sometimes. They can he a stubborn lot!

That's what my step dad has been saying, that it's her weekend disease. She does love working. Plus I think it's her age. I do think she is thinking about turning 80 years old in a few weeks. Today she asked me if I had seen the article in Women's Day about the caretakers and questions we should be asking. She said I needed to read it and if I had any questions about anything to ask her. That got me a little worried. They both have taken care of all arrangements when that time comes. Nearly everything. I did ask her what her BP was Friday. She said it was 165/110. That bottom number is what worries me. I told her this evening when I called that I would like for her to go to a doctor tomorrow as soon as she can. I'd like to be with her. I go to a good doctor that is more alternative and I like her for that. She will suggest meds but will also go the other way. This is just strange and I want her to be ok. She is only taking a 2.5 BP pill once a day. She did get sick when they went back to their other home in S. Ga. last month too. So maybe it's not the house. It's her. She always sneezed real bad and her allergies really bothered her when she came up here to visit in the past. Now they live here. And the pollen is already high this early. It's bothering me too. So maybe she should be going to an allergy doctor too. She may need to take shots. Chattanooga is like the 3rd worst place to live for allergies.

There could be several things affecting my mom. I just hope we can get it figured out soon. Thank you all for your comments. It has given me many things to tell mom.

I'm going to vote for anxiety versus heart attack. If it were mold then step dad would be sick, too. An allergy would not make you that sick. If it's the bad mold then everyone is affected, no one is immune. Please let us know what you find out.

These are also classic signs of anxiety disorder. I have struggled with it in the past and had every one of those symptoms. It would explain the odd pattern. Please have her see a doctor right away and be sure to ask if it could be anxiety based. Let us know how things are going.

That sure sounds strange. It's possible it could be something in the house, but seems like since she has such a severe reaction, that she would have it any time she's in the house, not just on days off. Would it be possible for her to stay with you or someone else for a couple of weeks on her days off, to see if it still happens?

Maybe try to figure out what she's doing different on her days off? Does she still get up at the same time? eat the same meals? Drink the same amount of coffee, etc? This is a long shot - could it be mental? Could she not be wanting to be at home - would rather be a work?

I'm not real sure those are the right symptoms for an environmental allergy though. I thought it was more like cough, sore throat, breathing problems. Chest pains and rising blood pressure don't sound like symptoms of allergy to me.

Guess you have to be almost like a detective to try to figure out the puzzle of what's causing all this. Good luck with it, hope you can find the answer! Please keep us posted on it, I'd be curious to know the cause.

Before we moved into this house over 2 years ago, we lived in a 113 year old building that had alot of mold in it, even places we did not know it was there. I know there are real estae people that have inspectors that have a machine to test for mold. There are 4 different kinds. My mold level in my blood was over 1600, when normal is less than 35!!!!! I was in the hospital for my lungs 6 times a year, but did not associate it to mold at that time until I moved. There are alot of air born allergens that could be bothering her. See if she can get a blood test for allergies in your area.

The central unit is brand new. Just put in at the end of summer. They don't use it much because they have that electric fireplace heat and the EdenPure heater. I will ask if they have changed the filter in the central. And it is all electric. They live in town so no well. She did just strat taking a very low dose BP med about 2 months ago. Maybe a little less than that. But she was getting sick before taking that. That's the only meds she is taking.

I will be going back over there Tuesday so will start looking for mold.

Thanks for these suggestions. And I will tell her to call the electric company tomorrow too. And maybe have the water tested? She does not drink much water though.

Kris: You could do some checking on your own. For mold, check the bottom cabinets in the kitchen and baths. Don't just go by looking, rub your fingers on the floor boards of the cabinets, base boards, behind the washer & dryer, behind toilets, etc... If she has an AC, check to see if the filters have been changed. There are carbon dioxide tests one can buy. I've seen them at Lowe's or Home Depot. How is the water coming into her house; is it well water or not. Is she taking more than one blood pressure pill a day? Keep us posted.
I'd be super concerned as you are.

Also, if they are on propane, a small leak can definitely cause headaches and it makes me want to vomit!

Kris, since it is wintertime, could a faulty heater be to blame? Carbon monoxide poisoning is very common in winter months:

Your local utility company should come out and check carbon monoxide levels, etc. for free or very low-cost. It sure sounds like there is something that's affecting her at the house.
