Pollen is the only way to identify the source of honey—in fact, the FDA says any product that's been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen isn't even honey."
They are doing it so that they can't trace the honey back to China, which contains antibiotics and is often stored in drums lined in lead. The U.S. has banned all honey imports from China but they are still managing to smuggle it in, based on the FDA findings above.

Posted - Feb 11 2012 : 08:45:45 AM Thanks for the info. I buy local honey - but once I grabbed a honey bear at the grocery store. It was awful compared to "real" stuff. I threw it out. Won't make that mistake again..
Kris - I agree with you. It really gets my dander up...

Posted - Feb 10 2012 : 10:28:12 AM Wow, that is scary. I buy local honey by the 5 gallon buckets. We go through a lot of honey making bread and elderberry syrup and tea. I would NOT buy any food that comes from China. When will people learn??? Buy local food. Right here in this country you have everything you need to eat. Why buy anything from other countries? It's crazy! My husband said he saw some fruit cup things at a truck stop and he looked at the label closely. It was from China. He put it back. Why do we need food from other countries anyway?? Why? I'm sorry, but this really gets to me. Are we that hard up that we have to go elsewhere and get our food now? Come on already.

Posted - Feb 10 2012 : 10:22:48 AM We've been buying our local for the last three years. I don't use anything other than that. Someday, if we get the materials, I'd like to have my own bee boxes.

Posted - Feb 10 2012 : 10:21:56 AM Yep! Isn't that crazy scary? Man. I'm so glad we've gotten local honey. Now with all the CCD going around, We're waiting a year before we get our hive started. Just crappy how the bees are getting wiped out so Monsanto can release their super bee. Makes me angry.
We just bought 2 gallons of local honey on New Year's plus we have 2.5 gallons from AZ apiarists.

Posted - Feb 10 2012 : 08:21:48 AM Paula, This is great information- and not very surprising to me. Thankfully I buy my honey local in the town I live. It is so sad the icky things that come from over seas! Lori |
