DH and I are planning a speedy trip to SW Missouri to look at a farm to possibly buy. In this trip we need to cram as much recon as possible in addition to seeing the house, starting the purchase process (if applicable), checking the local branch of my husband's employer to discuss a transfer with the management.
I'm already planning on cruising the nearby towns to spot services and local shops, and hitting Wal-Mart (you can judge a local economy by who is cashiering at wally world.)
Anyone else have any suggestions to help "study up" on our new hometown while we're there?

Mansfield/Ava :) Yep, Laura Ingalls Wilder's home town. On top of a nice secluded hill between the two smack dab in Amish country.

I grew up in Missouri until my 30's so thats why i said that about the zoning.......Even small towns now are getting pickier in what they want because neighbors complain about roos, loud goats ect even if its considered a farm area...its always best to check so if any new people are in office you know what you are dealing with.......but am happy to hear you have researched the area & are good to go.....what part of Missouri are you headed to?...I grew up in Springfield/Nixa/Ozark/Sparta area...down near Branson/Arkansas border.....We plan to move back to Sparta in the near future since all of hubbys family still lives in that town......still have the grocery store from the 1950's, one 1950's resturant, 2 gas stations & thats pretty much it...love that its not grown much....Michele'

I suggest asking people who live there! Talk to cashiers, gas station attendants, waitresses, the person standing behind you in line, etc. Most people are happy to share info about their hometown, and it's a backdoor way to judge how friendly and neighborly a town is.

Where in Mo. I have family who has lived in that part of MO for decades. I like the Carthage area. A lot of jobs in that area used to also give as a fringe benefit season passes to silver dollar city. I know for sure Precious Moments did, and so did a lot of other companies. I need to take my kids to Precious Moments soon. Maybe this summer.

Alright, so:
~ visit a likely church (Because you're right Diana, a good church is important to my family.)
~ look for a police blotter
~ feed store
This is rural Missouri Michele, and there are no zoning prohibitions out that way or building codes, I've already checked into that. Also utilities, which are very reasonable. Internet is also much better than I am used to. Woot!

if the town/area has a city hall definitely go get their zoning info..usually cost no more than $10... some areas have requirements/fees/regulations for farms.& farm animals..
as hit the in town area feed store just to talk with the owner.....he will be the one who knows whats going on in the area farmer wise plus you can check out what they carry so you know ahead of time & the prices....I say this cause I spend more time in the feed store than any where else & have gotten good info on whats what with the town thur them....Michele'

See if their local paper has a police report published to see how much crime is in the area. Call the police department to see what the statistics are and if there are some bad parts of town or country that you should avoid (learned that lesson the hard way).
Check the prices between the super markets and check the ratings online to see if there are any good service stations for vehicles.
