Hey Tasha-Rose, I have relatives who grew up in Day, MN! I've always thought it was a silly name for a town too! I'm going to visit someday when I'm in MN.

How about Stuck, Zillah, Index, Spangle, Chuckanut, and Concrete WA? My favorite all time wierd name in this state is the Poo Poo Point Trail at the Cougar Mountain Regional Park in Issaquah. What were they thinking when they named that one?

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Man it took me all day to remember this one.....Puckerbrush, Nev. My late dh, being a truck driver all his life used to call me from Puckerbrush once in awhile, I'd always say "yeah, right".....as he always referred to places in the middle of nowhere as "puckerbrush", always just thought he was teasing me. Then on one trip I made with him, we were out in the middle of nowhere and drove into Puckerbrush, Nev.! We laughed about that for alot of years!!

live, laugh, love

Many of the places here reflect English, German or native origin. Then there is Scalp Level in Cambria county, and Wyoming was here first.....

Oh, Luanne! You have GOT to see Phil! LOL! SO cute... Did you see the window at the library where you can view the town's groundhogs year round? Phil resides there! My stepbrother lives in Punxy and took us for the grand tour and festivities a few years ago. They sure take their ceremonies quite seriously! :)

Thanks for clearing up the Lackawanna... I just figured that by the time the settlers settled in, they were plumb tuckered out! LOL! ;)

Have a blessed holiday season, girls!

Nini - That's funny that you've been to Gobbler's Knob! I've been there too, and to Punxsutawney, but not while "Phil" was out.

I live just a couple of miles from Lackawanna County, and it is an Indian name. Northeast PA had several large Indian settlements. Our lake nearby is called Wallenpaupack - also from the Indians.

Love this thread!

I've actually BEEN to Gobbler's Knob, Luanne! On Groundhog Day, as a matter of fact! Too funny!!!

I find these PA town names funny: Blue Ball, Intercourse, and Lackawanna County... What on earth were the settler's thinkin'? LOL!!!

The area where I live used to have a community where mini farms are now. It was called Whodathoughtit. But my favorite here in Oklahoma are the two communities Nowata and Lottawatah. :-)

I remembered another one from here in PA - Gobblers Knob. It is even mentioned in one of Beverly Lewis's books.

I used to live in Flintstone, Ga. right up the road. My youngest daughter still lives there.

Wonder what's behind these town names. Flintstone was named because of the rock. We got all kinds of jokes when we moved there. But I love it. And the many ways people pronounce Chickamauga. Very funny! I just spell it for them.

I do love Knob Lick, Kn. Or Paint Lick? What was it?

Oh yeah, I forgot Skunks Misery here in Northeast PA. I'm not sure if it is an official town, or just a section, but the name always makes me wonder?!?!??

How about Purgatory, Alaska? Fortunately there is also a Paradise. And Quinahagak? Any takers on pronunciation? And Egegik and Kvichak? Anuktuvik Pass, which means, of all things, the hind end of a caribou. Hee, hee.

I should start one just for you, Trish--before Violet was born, Justin and I drove that little Honda civic through 10 kinds of creekbeds, reading the Gazateer, trying to find all these little places. We've seen some really amazing things along the way!

Jonni,
I don't follow blogs. If you had a blog about visiting these wonders of Kentucky, I would.
