Okay, I have been studying the events calendar for the Texas State Fair and these are the days that I will be able to attend... If anyone wants to meet me there, I'd sure love to meet you, esp. if you will be showing animals at the fair.

(In parentheses, I have listed the livestock events that I plan on seeing that day, in case anyone is interested. These are NOT the only events for that day, just the ones I have marked.)

Sept. 29th (Fri) - [Llamas, Miniature Zebu Cattle, Dairy Goat Milk Out]

Oct. 1st (Sun)[Llamas, Dairy Goats, Miniature Zebu Cattle, Pygmy & Dwarf goats]

{MAYBE} Oct. 13th (Fri) - [Cashmere and Angora Goats]

Oct. 14th (Sat) [Poultry, Meat Goats]

(MAYBE) Oct. 15th (Sun) [Boer goats]

Oct. 20th (Fri)[Dorper Sheep, Fine Wool Sheep]

Oct. 22nd (Sun) [Rabbits, Medium Wool Sheep]

The Santa Gertrudis cattle events are this last weekend of the show - the 21st and 22nd.

Hi from College Station! Yeah, I get to go home today. Spent the afternoon at the ranch yesterday. I didn't want to leave. Only three came up to the horn on my truck. So off I went to check on the others. They decided to follow me back. I love being able to gather beef cattle on foot even if you don't want to. Gentle beef cattle don't loose weight.

Your correct Connie, we aren't showing our Gerts at the moment. When the cattle were moved to the ranch the end of March, they were all to old to be shown, and all four had been. Since then we have purchased 6 (one bull, one pair, and three heifers). Two of the heifers we purchased would have made great show heifers. They would have to have calves at side now to be successful in the ring. So, hopefully their babies will be shown. Our bull would have made a show bull, but the ranch he came off of had some better ones to show. He's been worked with alot so he is really quite gentle. He's gotten pushy lately. He's a good starter bull for us. The next bull we breed or purchase will have to meet three criteria, conformation, good gain test and ultra sound numbers and Genstar 5 or better. The Genstar will be the difficult one to achieve. The heifer calf of the pair is now seven months and could be shown, but I don't think she is quite the quality we need to promote the ranch. So she will be a momma. We will eventually get to the ring, with the cattle. Are biggest problem if we could show now is we don't have the facilities yet to fit a calf for show. So we may be a few years. Connie we will probably show five shows a year, the majors, the state fair and Natonals.

Kay, I do hope you can make it. Just remember our days are warm in October and cool in the evening...so pack accordingly. Don't forget a light weight jacket, too. Some fronts have been known to keep the temps in the 50's in October.

I don't know the schedule of any rabbit show in advance as to when a particular breed is shown, so I won't be able to leave the barn until both breeds show. Mini Rex is usually but not always an early breed. American Sables are usually one of the last breeds shown. There may be a good chance DD won't be with me. She gets pretty busy with school activities. I'll make sure those who are going will have my cell # as we get closer to the 21st.

Can't wait.....

I don't have plans to go as of yet but I should, I only live 2 hours from Dallas. If plans change and I can go, I'll contact you ladies that are going and meet up with you.

Saturday Oct. 21st sounds like a great day to meet there! I've already marked down the days I want to go and the 21st is one of them!

(I'll be riding with DH...) Where will we meet? The livestock barns or in front of Big Tex? I vote for the livestock barns for those who can't leave their animals...

10/21 is okay by me! We could meet at my house before and carpool if it's easier- I live pretty near fair park... that would be so much fun! And I'll also join in if you come earlier, Kay-- I love the fair and I haven't been in 7 years...

Hey Farm Girls!!
I am so excited about this. Why don't we make plans to go on Sat Oct 21 when Kim is there with her bunnies. Kim, I gather that you do not show your cattle. I noticed that there was a SG section on the livestock calendar.

If we agree on 10/21, I will request the day off NOW!.. Saturdays are very difficult to take off in the world of children's librarians in public libraries. The weather should be beautiful.

Kay I visited with Elodie by email, and she told me that you were working on getting the funds together for airfare. If you come earlied than Oct, we can go on a Fri or Sun, which are my days off.

(You will recognize me because I look enough like Carol from MJ Farms to be her sister. Every time I look at the Farm Fair photos, I am just amazed at how much we look alike--at least if she photographs the way the she looks in person.)

Guess that this should be an "all call" for Texas Farm Girls---Dawnn, Fran, Gloria, Dar, Kristi et al..............

I'll be there! Even my work takes a half-day then takes us all to the fair for lunch and a couple of rides! Let me know when, and I'll be there with bells on!

Hey y'all we are going....

We'll be showing those rabbits we don't take to Convention which starts the following weekend in Ft. Worth.

Dates: 10/21 & 22 I'm going to double check on that because the ad in our Texas Rabbit Breeder News is somewhat misleading. It will be DD's first trip to the Texas State Fair.

See ya at the Fair!

Kim

Hey Farm Girls!!!

Erin I have not gone to the Fair for years. I worked on the executive management team for Fair Park for about 1.5 years in the 90's. It kind of changed my perception of the Fair. However, I really, really love Big Tex. It was always so exciting when they would start to put him together right outside my office window in the Tower Building!

Perhaps we could have a FARMGIRL gathering at the Fair. I could bring my Farmgirl chapter of one--Howdy Y'all Chapter. I would prefer to go in mid-October when the weather will hopefully have cooled off.

Hey Texas Farm Girls What about the rest of you?

For those who don't live in Texas, you need to watch the old movie State Fair with Pat Boone. It was filmed at the Texas State Fair in Dallas.
