When you're sitting at your desk, slurping a bowl of soup, one might assume you're at lunch. So, why would a person stand and show you videos of their children, pictures of dogs they don't own any more, or their past hairstyles while you shovel dripping soup with noodles into your mouth? It isn't like I can comment--nor do I really want to. My lunch hour, which I never fully take, is the only time I have to myself. When she finally walked away, then another co-worker decided it was time to ask me about files that had been closed and "who I addressed the box to when I sent it out?" and when I seemed irritated, she said, "are you at lunch?"

Um...yes. Thanks for noticing!

I work in a fast food restaurant. We have minimal staff. Our lunch breaks amount to wolf it down between customers. But, on the other hand, our breaks are paid and we don't have to pay for food while we are on the clock either. I hate it because I need some time to get a second wind sometimes. When I worked as a corrections officer, we could not leave the jail for meal breaks. Once again, we were paid while we were at lunch, but at least we had a little down time. Sorry, Jonni, I feel for you, but it could be worse.

I work in a rural public library where there is no lunch room, you have to eat at the circulation desk. I get so fed up with customers making comments about what I am eating! We just have to work through our meal time. And hope the phone doesn't ring, which usually happens right when you take a bite of something!

(It's a pain, but I'm glad I have the job.)

Hi Jonni -

Even though I haven't worked an at-of-the-house job in awhile, similar stuff used to happen to me all the time. My dad passed away when I was young and my mom had health problems, so I worked A LOT of different jobs starting when I was 13. At one job I had in a store at the mall, our manager would come to our tiny break room in the back and want to "talk issues" (reprimand us) while we were on our 20-minute meal breaks! At another job I had in my 20s, I was on a stringent diet and drank "diet shakes" at lunch time. Of course, it only took 2 min to slurp them down, so I would sit and read a book for the rest of my break. Other co-workers on break would see me not eating and would tell our boss I was loafing and I would repeatedly have to prove when I clocked out for break (which would take time away from my break, of course!) I had another job where a woman from another dept who liked to THINK she was my boss, even though she wasn't, would interrupt me at my desk while I was obviously WORKING through lunch (while trying to eat) and try to get me to gossip about and bad mouth other people in the office.

I could go on and on, but I won't!

It doesn't surprise me anymore how self-involved and rude people can be - especially in the workplace!

Sorry it happened to you, too.

She seem like those type of instigators. I will just say if you have problem talk to HR or my manager or my union rep.

As if it was frustrating enough yesterday, and that this happens so frequently, the co-worker who asked me if I was at lunch while I had a mouth full of soup thought I "snapped" at her and she came to my desk this morning and said, "can we talk about yesterday? Because, I feel like you snapped at me and this isn't the first time you've snapped at me while you're sitting at your desk eating..."

Um, need I say more? If it's not the first time I've snapped at you when I'm sitting at my desk eating, perhaps it would be a hint to you to use more sense than to ask me about work while I'm eating?!

Good for you getting out of the office for a while on your lunch. I have tried posting a note between me and the counter of my desk saying I am at lunch and it did not work(I guess they like talking to me with my mouth full), I tried headphones and someone told my boss I was goofing off at my desk. The only lunches I really got were out of the office. Enjoy todays lunch time.

God bless,

I'm both relieve and dismayed to see that I'm not the only person who works with the obliviously afflicted. I work in a 4 story mansion that was once a private home, and the "lunch room" is on the 4th floor attic/servants quarters--though it has a fridge, a microwave, etc..to be honest, even though it's quiet, the lighting is terrible and it's a really dreary environment and either entirely too cold or entirely too stuffy, depending on the season. It was that way when I arrived 11 years ago and isn't likely to change since only a few of us bring our lunch.

As others have said on this post, lunch hour is sacred--the only time you DO get to yourself in a busy day, so I want to spend it in an aesthetically pleasing place, too.

Today I have soup--I'm eating it in the lunchroom then heading to the feed store to get dog food!!!!

I have the same problem at work. About a year ago I started putting my headphones on. Sometimes I listen to music, sometimes not but for some reason unless it truly is important no one seems to bother me anymore. When I had food in front of me it was always allowed people to say, "oh your on lunch, can I just ask y a quick question?". The headphones work great. Maybe they will work for you too. Good luck.

My lunch break is the only break I get all day. I am consently dealing with others when I am on the clock. I need time to myself. I had your problem, then I realized that I could go into our conference room, shut the door (it has an auto lock) and know one can see me in there. They can still page me over the P A, but very few do.

Where I work lunch time is sacred. We punch out and are not to be disturbed unless it's an emergency. If we clock in even one minute early the company has to pay us for the lunch. My boss audits all of our punches for lunch. It's a very big deal. I think it came from a lawsuit that employees work 12 hours but they had no proof we got a real lunch break. I would guess the people bother you with their photos and videos because they know you're not going to get up and leave. You're trapped!

Sorry to laugh but it drives me insane when people do that.

I just love when they start talking and sometimes I see spits coming out and I say arg...your salvia is invading my lunch. I throw the food/lunch out when I do see little spits coming out and it landed on my hand/arm or... which is next to my lunch or cover my lunch when I see them.

That's a smart idea Tasha-Rose.

Makes me think of people who call on the phone . . my house phone . . and ask me if I'm home.
My response is "well, I answered the phone didn't I?" And these are people who aren't into the cell phone loop and don't even have our cell numbers.
Hmmmmmm . . . yup, I'm home!?

I have a sign that I put up outside of my cube that says I am at lunch....stops a lot of traffic from coming into my cube.

Jonni-
It happened to me so often that I just give them the blank stare or say what? I say ummmm can you bother me after lunch. I clock out. Sometimes I do it back to them when they are in lunchbreak just to let them taste their own medicine. I know I am bad but...I can't help it.
