I'm asking on this forum because I've discussed it with a few in real life friends and have found that other people are dealing with this:

The end of September/beginning of October comes around and suddenly you're tired, bummed out, overwhelmed with everything there is to do, and don't really care if you get it done.

This happens to me EVERY year. The rest of the year, I'm waking up at 5 am (no problem!) and going to bed 11pm or midnight. But autumn comes around and suddenly I can't stay awake past 9 pm and I'm pressing snooze on the alarm until 7. Those extra hours I'm sleeping means I get less done (those extra hours are my ME time when I'm writing or crocheting or sewing...) and without my me time I turn into a bear.

I was mentioning this (being more tired and more crabby) to a few friends here and they said "Oh my gosh, ME TOO! Every year!"

Does anyone else deal with this? Does it have something to do with the sunlight? Or is it something else? And how do you deal with it?

I kinda like the way we all slow down a bit more in Fall and Winter. It is like nature is tellin us to relax a bit more after the frantic pace of the growing and canning seasons. Today was a perfect example. We are in the midst of trying to get stalls built in the barn. All was going fairly well this week, we even were able to sneak away for a drive up in the front range yesterday afternoon. Boy did we need it! And then this morning...it SNOWED! Needless to say, the horses and donks were miserable, and wanting to be in their barn darn it! We still have not finished the barn, one because it was just too cold to work out there; and two, both my husbands batteries for his drill died! So we rigged it so they could all come in out of the weather and tomorrow is another day.

Amy - Me too! As you may remember, we're switching over to complete homeschooling next Fall for all our girls, but this year the two oldest are still going to public school and the two youngest are home with me. I decided to "practice" by home-preschooling the four year old. From the end of August until about two weeks ago she and I did the daily learning like racers. But, all of a sudden Fall hit and we can't seem to get our act together. Plus, all those home projects I usually love tackling have been sitting around waiting for any attention from me. I've noticed I seem run down like this every year. I hate it because Spring and Summer I'm always energetic.

I don't know this Brian guy, but I will definately check him out. Thanks a lot. I have email that works effectively both ways on one computer, usually. It's a mean email, and is always mad at me.
I haven't played guitar in a few days because I fell by my mailbox, reading bad, bad mail. I landed on my left hand mostly. A handsome stranger stopped to try to help, but I yelled at him, GET AWAY!! I am allergic to attractive men. Have you been reading the marriage string?

I can't remember if I mentioned that people here buy lights and go to tanning.

Hey - I was going to ask you (tried to email you but your email wasn't working)...you said before on a thread (i think the swap you hosted) about a quote that said: “You're the strangest person I ever met, she said & I said you too & we decided we'd know each other a long time.” That's Brian Andreas. He does Story People. I have some of his books and a couple of his prints. Do you know any of his other stuff? I LOVE his work. Anyone who likes Brian Andreas is a friend of mine!

Good suggestion Tina. I know that my homeopathic doctor always changes my dosage with what the sun is doing/what season we are in so that's probably a good idea too~!

You might try upping your vitamins. I usually up the ginseng just a little and I'm good to go.
I really hate the time change every year and it messes me up for several weeks.

Wow! We were discussing this at work yesterday and thought it was seasonal allergies. The ragweed is bad here this year. But since you all are from states all over it cant be that. I had never heard the pull of the moon thing which is interesting.

Ah yes, the dreaded SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Been suffering from it for years and yes, always starts in October and never lets up until March. I tried anti-depressants which really helped but going off of them in April almost led to a divorce! So no more for me. What seemed to help last year was getting a job with a cubicle that has southern windows and moving into a house with nice big windows and 2 patio doors that face south. I NEVER close the drapes in the winter, need all the sunshine I can get. And walks before 10:00 in the morning help too.

I absolutely LOVE the way Brian Andreas sees the world. I have several of his cards and 2 pictures and several books. I've liked him for a long time.
After living with Seasonal Affective Disorder up north (PA)and finding it so difficult to function all my life and being SOOO depressed OCT-APR and hating snow, cold and winter with all my heart (I NEVER liked sledding or snowmen, etc.), I moved south (NC, TX, and now Florida) and feel SOOOOO much better. I "eat-up" the sunshine. I LOVE the "cold days-50s-here. We get just enough real cold (30s) for a few days so as to be a pleasant change but it never lasts long. We live near the water and I love the breeze even in the winter. I know I will never live north of NC again and I admire those of you who cope with winter in good spirits, but I know I was just born in the wrong place. I've been a Florida beach girl my whole life and just didn't know it. I remember the dark and cold so well and truely, my heart is with you..but I'm glad my body is here. :-) Joey

I am to busy to be tired....lol.

But I have a friend who went to the Dr. with this several years ago and was diagnosed with Seasonal Effective Disorder. Less sunshine causes your feel good hormaones to dip low. So they write her a prescription to get filled the first of October and told her to get all the sunshine she could possibly get.

Good Luck, talk to your Dr.

CJ - I love Red Green!! He's on my coffee cup!

Farmdream - I can see how it would be different with your weather. It's amazing to me how the seasons, the sunlight, and the weather can all have such an effect on us and how we feel!

We have it once the cool spring temps are over and the relentless summer heat starts. We feel livelier this time of year in this location. There's more motivation and more smiles when it's not 105 degrees all day long. We do have some days in winter where we stayed curled up in blankets. Spring is unpredictable weather. When summer hits we sleep because it's too hot to go outside.

I hear ya' Amy! Boy do I!! Most days aren't too bad, but yesterday was the PITS!! Working 10 hours in a dark dreary environment while it rained ALL DAY!. Today, I just felt like I should just give up and go back to bed. HOWEVER, I went on my power walk and my entire outlook changed . . . even though it's another cold, dreary, cloudy day!
I hear ya'.

Angela - I really appreciate you posting about the pull of the moon - its been suggested to me before. Last winter when I was so down in the dumps, my husband asked "Why are you so gloomy?" I said "I feel like there is nothing to do. I feel so unproductive!" He told me "The earth is sleeping right now, you should be too!" So I guess that's along the same lines of what you said. But man, it hits me every year and I am somehow taken by surprise!

Me too! My friends and I are doing a very hard semester at school and we are all on the verge of having some serious melt downs. I have even thought of going to the doctor to get a script for Propanolol to get me through the semester!

My grandma says it is the pull of the moon. She says it is the way people have lived from bible times. You are supposed to sleep when it's dark and work when it's light.

In the fall, there is more cooking for canning, which the cooler weather accomidates, and more time for sleeping as standing over a hot pot drains you quite a bit.

The winter is best handled snuggled under blankets, so it is dark the most that time of year.

The spring is cool days to allow for the super heavy work and longer than summer nights to allow for proper rest.

Summer is all about the heat and water. You can cool off while watering your gardens, which are just beginning to produce, and require little canning just yet. It is also the time of year for animal shearing and birthing, keeping you quite busy and glad the garden is still in slow mode.

There are a lot of patterns to life and some are easy to see and some are not. Fall is simply the beginning of the wind down for the year, thus pulling us women towards our beds much more than other times. I find it very difficult to get up and stay up this time of year, but winter pulls at me so hard I actually prepare freezers full of meals so I can just thaw and heat much of the time. I would be very happy to just hibernate! LOL!
