I saw this online and I had to share, I know so many of us have loved, still love and have lost beloved dogs and this got me right in the heart. Please read!

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten year old wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owner's Ron, his wife Lisa and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found that he was dying of cancer. I told the family that we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure in their own home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me it would that they thought it would be good for little Shane to be there and observe the procedure and that he may learn something valuable from it.

The next day I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within minutes Belker slipped peacefully away.

The boy seemed to accept Belker's transition with out difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly piped up with "I know why"

Startled, we all turned to to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to be good - like loving everybody all the time and being nice"
"Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Oh Beth, I still tear up over the death of my beautiful and gentle catahoula hound, Hooligan. It's been a few years now,but they take a piece of your heart with them when they pass *Hugs*

This is so appropriate for our family right now. Our 15yr old border collie passed away 2 days ago. We handled it pretty well. About 6 weeks ago, she wondered off & we thought then she went off to die, she was gone for a week & when the neighbor found her she was covered in burrs & nearly starved to death. She had never wondered before. She wouldn't eat for us, but when our 8yr old son came home she suddenly ate & continued to improve & return to her old self & soon was following him to the barn everyday again just as she had before. This prepared us for what was coming, because we knew she wasn't going to be with us real long, but felt like we got another chance with her. Suddenly, she just stopped & within a few hours she just stopped breathing. Our son was the last one to go see her alive in the morning, within 20 minutes after he gave her one last petting, she passed. Love that he got to be with her...he actually is taking it better than I am. :(

Absolutely beautiful. What a brilliant little boy. I don't know what I would do without my pomeranian, he is my heart. I defy anyone not to fall in love with their dogs. It just doesn't happen.
