Posted - Sep 12 2011 : 06:16:19 AM I was busy cleaning yesterday, enjoying these days of with the windows wide open, curtains billowing and I just happened to look out into the front yard and my eye caught, what I thought was 2 or 3 hummingbirds duking it out in the air (not uncommon for the males)...but then I looked closer and saw hundreds of them...but they were dragonflies!!!! Flying back and forth, in circles, hovering just over my front yard. I even went out and stood in the middle of them, and they didn't dissipate or move on?!! It was incredible, the blues and greens and golds of the vibrant bodies, the sound of their wings as they flew by me. And they stayed out there for at least 3 hours before moving on up to the neighbors yard. Has anyone seen this before? They didn't appear to be eating anything, what do you think they were doing?

Posted - Sep 14 2011 : 6:53:30 PM We've had that same thing happen three summers ago. It is incredible! We've had it on a lesser scale the past two summers now. Don't know what or why, I just sit back and enjoy God's amazing work.

Posted - Sep 14 2011 : 09:46:30 AM Oooo. That must have been so awesome and inspiring to be part of. I love dragonflies and I never see enough of them.
BTW, if you have water nearby they might be after the mosquitos. They love mosquitos.
I cannot master those things that I have not tried.

Posted - Sep 12 2011 : 1:19:09 PM Yes, also Pennsylvania, Rosemary. I actually filled out a "swarm sighting" form online for a science website associated with a university, and in the last week, Pennsylvania has seen many swarms.

My husband commented this past weekend on the unusually large number of dragonflies here.
We're in central Pennsylvania. |

Posted - Sep 12 2011 : 08:04:26 AM That is amazing! We have had a lot of dragonflys out west but I have never seen a swarm before! Conditions this year must have been right for a large hatching or something!

Posted - Sep 12 2011 : 06:58:57 AM I've been doing a little reasearch on line, Kim and it's apparently quite rare, but this week alone, there have been swarm sightings all over Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and now, I guess, Kentucky. I filled out a sight form online, for this science site, describing weather conditions, how long they swarmed, etc. They really don't know "why"...but I feel like I'm privvy to a secret from Mother Nature! I even brought my 2 year old out with me, and held her in the center of the swarm. She kept putting her hand out, inviting them to land on her :) They didn't, they were MUCH too busy!!!

Posted - Sep 12 2011 : 06:56:52 AM The ones around us come out right before sunset and are thick, swooping and diving over the house and pasture. Our friends came by in the early evening the other day and witnessed it. They were in awe, because it is just something you don't see in town, I guess. It appears to be a mid-late summer thing.
