I don't know if there is a more appropriate category but thought I'd catch some good ideas here. I am in charge of a few (5-6) door prizes for a fall luncheon for a good sized group of retired teachers.
I was told not to spend more that $10. I'm not comfortable going to local businesses asking for donations so I decided I'd make something, and just get little bags at the dollar store. I'm a bit stumped because the group is both women and men, some really up and active and others wheel-chair bound. For ladies I'd be more confident in a choice. What do you think of bags of home-made carmels ( I've got a no-fail recipe that I've made for family get-togethers and weddings for years) or maybe little loaves of breads; banana, pumpkin, raspberry? I'm open for other ideas and have over a month to think it over and get it done.

Just a note here. You might want to be very careful about food items or items with a scent. Many people have allergies or are diabetic, so you might want to consider that.
I cannot master those things that I have not tried.

'Just had one more thought, Susan - usually you can find wooden rubber stamps on clearance or on sale at JoAnn's or Michael's for really, really cheap, like a dollar or two apiece. And you can buy a whole stack of 6 or 7 Color Box liquid chalk stamp pads for around $5. It'd be pretty fun to put a single stamp pad and a small rubber stamp together (with a generic message like, "Thank You!" or "Happy Birthday" or a pretty little design) in a little gift baggie for the raffle, too. If you catch the sales just right, you could get 5 or 6 sets of these for around $10. Everyone likes a fun stamp to put on cards and envelopes!!! - Nini

I like that pie idea - YUM! What about good ol' fashioned card games and board games? We used to do tons of fundraisers, and those were always surprisingly so popular... You can get them pretty inexpensively at the big box stores, too. You might also want to contact local Mary Kay, Avon, Pampered Chef, Partylite, and other home sales consultants - I bet they'd be happy to donate a little baggie of sample products that would delight the girls at your luncheon, if you allow them to include a little catalog and their business card! I could also email you some layered cookie jar recipes, if you like - all you need are quart canning jars, the ingredients and a little bit of raffia to tie on the recipe instructions! i love the homemade bread idea; also the caramels or homemade jelly; men would like that too! or do some caramel apples and some cookies in a little bag tied with raffia and fall leaves.

Any way I didn't have much money for my baby shower budget either. I went to michael's 1.00 section and got a bunch of stuff for the "prizes". Every one loved it. I bought several things and as people won the games I let them choose what they wanted from a basket. The things that got chosen the most was magnetic picture frames, (both men and women picked them), then address books, and a few people chose the blank cards.
I like the home baked goods idea as well.

How about a sudoku book or some other puzzle books? Maybe even a puzzle? A $5 gas card or something "old school" like a yoyo?

I did prizes at the class I taught last night at the fire station. All guys.=) The prize for winning Hazmat bingo was a jar of homemade mixed berry jam and he was thrilled! I think caramels are a great idea. A loaf of good banana bread or a little basket of cookies.
For the ladies... a crocheted dish cloth or dish scrubbie. A little cup of chocolate dipped peppermint sticks for hot chocolate. A cookie or muffin in a jar mix.
A ribbon tied around 4 blank greeting cards with envelopes.
A potted plant.
That's off the top of my head. =)

I think your idea of mini loaves of bread is PERFECT! Something fall flavored like pumpkin or cranberry. That means a little bit of work right before the luncheon but as long as you leave some time and have your other preparations done ahead you should be fine. Or...they freeze well! You could make them ahead and then take them out the night before!

Sorry :) I love a challenge :) I always think of things like this (and am always asked to get things like this!). I'm trying to think of other gender neutral things that would suffice--there are always cd's and things like that you can find in bargain bins. Some really nice classical music or jazz, easy listening. My mom buys dvd's at Target for $5.00! Since they're teachers, what about an issue of National Geographic, or History Magazine or something along those lines--Smithsonian. Those are all on the newstand and are about $5.00 a piece. You could toss in a sweet or those samples of coffe--EVERYONE likes coffee and if they don't, they can put a pot on when guests come to visit.

Well, it is much easier to buy gifts for ladies, but since we're heading into fall, how about some autumn scented candles, a large decorated Halloween cookie, or your caramels. That sounds good. Also, notecards, and things like that are always appreciated. Men are just plain difficult, and I'm guessing since it's a door prize, it would be randomly won, so I think food or stationary products are a great way to go. From the desk of note pads, something like that.
