Hello Farmgirl Sisters!
Today I went to my local "True Value" hardware store to get some more canning supplies, and was pleasantly surprised to see that jars were on sale! I got 12 Pint size jars for $6.99 and 12 quart size jars for $7.99. I was going to buy them anyway so was happy to see the sale. Just an FYI for those who live near a "True Value" store. Also curious what Y'all are canning these days. I'm new to canning myself- trying it for the first time this year. SO far we have made some dill pickles. Plan on doing some garden salsa also. Want to make things up to put in baskets for some Christmas gifts. I like to try and do the homemade Christmas whenever possible.
Would love to hear your ideas!

Canned 12 jars of strawberry jam yesterday...small jelly jars were not on the True Value sale so had to pay $9.99 for case of 12. I am going to be sure and mention to my family/friends that if after they use the "gifts" inside the jars, they do not have a use for them to please return them to me (unless of course they have a use for them- crafting etc). It will be much cheaper to just buy new lids as opposed to all new jars! I've done the math and its still cheaper to make my own jam then buy from the store- and of course Oh so much better being homemade!

Still need to put up apple jelly and Paradise Peppers, so I recently bought four cases of 1/2 pint jars. You did WAY better than me on price!

My daughter has taken a big interest in canning this summer...Where could we get a BIG pressure canner? She borrowed one ,but would like to just get one of our own..she homeschools her boys,n they learned how to prepare veggis to make salsa..they had to do all food prep, measuring etc..n then figue out expenece and cost per Jar...besides all that, they cooked n stirred all ingredients/right down to puttin it in the Jars..Pretty good day of calculating n such....a lot learned in a day Blessings Shirl

Mary Beth - How do you can bacon?

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories

I am loving my new kitchen for canning! So much easier! I've been canning Kentucky Wonder pole beans, tomatoes, tomato sauce, seedless blackberry jam, vegetable soup, basil jelly and seedless elderberry jam. I'm making V-8 type juice tomorrow. I use it more for cooking than drinking but my sweetie likes it. I've been busy cleaning and re boxing all my old canning jars that were stored in open boxes. Seems like i won't need any more while i'm washing but I'll bet I need more if I'm going to make apple sauce, apple pie filling, apple butter and chutney this fall! Sigh. I better go count the jars.

Made some hot & sweet pepper relish on Monday for the first time - first time canning. I'm hoping when we open the first jar that it tastes as good as it smelled in here on Monday! I typically freeze everything, but relish needs canning!

That's a wonderful price. I think I'll check mine out!! Just finished canning beef stew and vaccuum-packed beef jerky. My next project tomorrow is going to be canning bacon. Yep! :-)

Only have canned pickled green beans this year. Have been doing a lot of dehydrating instead of canning.

I don't can, but use a lot of wide mouth canning jars for storage. Substitute the one piece white plastic lids. Whenever I make Jello or custards, I put it into pint jars where they sit on the snack shelf of the refrigerator.

Hi Laurie - thanks for the info on the canning jars. I'll have to check in my community to see if I can find some. I haven't done too much canning because my harvest wasn't all that great. I'm a newbie gardener so the lesson learned here was that I have to plant way more next year than I did this year if I want to can anything. I have frozen some, but I just didn't get that much out of my garden. -Barbara

Hey Laurie :)

Good prices, I'll have to check out our True Value. I am getting ready to make some jam. I did make some Blackberry-Vanilla and a Spiced Cherry Jam. I need to make more though. And I am waiting for peaches to try a Salted Butterscotch Peach Jam recipe I found :) I like to make herbal and fruit vinegars too. I have some Blackberry-Balsamic Vinegar 'steeping' right now :)

Great price on the jars. I have canned some pickled okra, tomatoes, and vegetable soup. I have some squash still waiting.
