My oldest (8) was referred to see the orthodontist because of a tooth that has been missing for two years. It was injured when he was two, stayed gray until he was 6 when it fell out, and now it hasn't come in. The other teeth around it are coming in and twisting enough that they are closing in the hole where this other tooth should be. By the way, this tooth is one of the top front ones.
Anyhow so we go to the ortho today and I'm totally expecting her to say that the tooth is up there, just being lazy, etc. Um, nope. With the xray, we discovered he's actually got TWO teeth waiting to come into that one spot. As in, an EXTRA tooth. Say WHAT?? Cripes. The bill to deal with this is over 3K. Double cripes. Anyone ever dealt with this?
I feel bad because there isn't any other way this is going to fix itself. The missing tooth is hung up because there is an extra tooth in the way. Just when we had some extra money....

My youngest daughter gets her braces off on 8-24-11 Yeah... $3000.00 was what I had to pay after my insurance..I used my flex spending for 2010 and 2011 $1500.00 each year. She didn't have anything missing or extras- just straightening, she's getting them off about 10 mo. sooner than expected..I have concerns about that but will see what will happen. I had a couple root canals last year that were 1400.00 each after the insurance. Wow dental work is EXPENSIVE!!! |

My kids had the problem of the baby tooth not being loosened by the permanent tooth -- seemed like the permanent one would either be in front of or behind the baby tooth. Hardly any of their baby teeth came out on their own, we had to get the dentist to pull them, which was costly.
My son had to wear an orthodontic appliance, headgear and braces, and he was very difficult to work with; daughter needed full braces. Our orthodontist worked out a payment plan with us, which took many years but was a reasonable amount each month, something like $75, I think.
Could you work out a monthly payment with your doctor?
Now that my daughter is 19 and sees pictures of herself with bad teeth when she was younger, she says she's soooo grateful that we spent the money on her teeth. Teeth do make a difference, in life, unfortunately. Sad but true.

 The costs are insane...I thought my dentist was over the top with an $800 root canal!

Maybe some of you with larger needs can look into a plan that would be so much cheaper to pay for and then save on the actual costs. We are still searching so I cannot really suggest any one place in particular. Hope it all works out!

oh man,that poor kid. I had a similar situation in my late teens-I had a tooth that was supposed to come down (an upper molar) and the dentist left it alone. It came down allrighty-into the root of one of my other molars. It was pushing hard on that other tooth. This was in mid December and the orthodontist flat out wouldn't see me till after the holiday. I'd never been in so much pain in my life-oragel would work for about 10 seconds. Ruined Christmas for me that year. When I went in on the 26th or 27th,he xrayed & was shocked to find how bad it was-they had to put me under to take the tooth out. I guess he thought I was a wimp or something till he saw the x ray. He felt pretty sheepish. At least your son is getting the work done now,before the pain starts.

No extra teeth, how about missing teeth! My DD started in orthodontics at age 8 with an expander to make her palate larger, then we had to wait, get 4 teeth pulled and now she is in full braces. She has 4 congenitally missing teeth and the hope was to save the 4 baby teeth, but it wasn't going to happen. We are lucky, in that my husband and I both have access to dental insurance with orthodontia coverage, but we still will pay enough out of pocket!

It is so expensive. I have needed braces all my life, but my parents never could afford it, and when I went a few years ago it would have been almost $7000. Madness.
Hope you guys can figure this out. Maybe check another orthodontist? I dunno.

I had an extra tooth as a child,they pulled it and then the permanent came in like it should have. Good luck with this.

Mary Beth- I have the same thing!! I was wondering if that was what caused them. Horrible orthodontist. I like my teeth being straight but I am glad they have moved out of the dark ages!

Amy..your poor son. I had the exact same thing back in the 70's when orthodotia was not what it is today. I was in braces for 5 years and the results were less than wonderful. Now I have teeth cracking because the metal braces being pounded on cause hairline cracks that get worse with age. Bleh.
Now, I am facing the cost of root canals and oh my gosh - it's awful. Each one runs around $1300. Soooo, we have decided that come January, we are going to put money into a Medical Savings Account and at least the money we spend on my teeth will be tax deductible. Maybe you can do the same thing. You just put in by the month and then you get reimbursed for bills from money that is free of income tax. And hopefully, your orthodontist has a monthly payment plan. So sorry you are having to go through this and that your little boy is having to face such an ordeal!!!

I've not dealt with that in particular...but I have been hot with a crazy dental bill lately. Is it possible for you to purchase some dental insurance before you start the procedure? The cost of the insurance may outweigh what you will have to pay out---we SHOULD have done that prior to starting the few procedures I needed :0(. My husband has a policy that will cover half of any costs he incurs but the family plan was kind of out of our budget...that is until we realized had we had it we would have saved more than we paid out. Oh well, live and learn! Hope it all works out for you!!
