I bought Violet a handmade smocked dress for a wedding we're attending on Saturday, and it's soooo sweet. She even has black patent leather shoes, to boot. But, I noted it's a little bit see through, so I thought I'd buy a slip. Not Macys, Penney's, Sears, Target, Kohls or Kmart has them for girls under 6. Seriously? I remember having at least 2 slips when I was very small.

Any suggestions on where I should look? I'd hit the thrifts, but time is running out (wedding is on Saturday at 2:00).

Yeah the "expensive" line at Strasburg their dresses are also lined. Very nicely to boot! The fabric is also thick enough even if they weren't lined you would never see through them and they still hang correctly etc.

My only suggestion would have been to take out the slip/liner that is in another dress. Most of my DD's dressier dresses have that. I do tend to buy darker colors and heavier materials because of the slip thing. My granny introduced me to the shorts type slip many years ago. I have an outlet mall with a Vanity Fair store that I buy mine at. There's also a Strasburg so I will check it out since I'm gathering school clothes now.

I agree I'm not sure what has happened to proper dressing. Just don't know!

Any way, also go in the summer time to the store if you can. It's best in fall and winter for sure, to get what you really really want. Again even if you spend a lot on the dresses, they will last for years, cause of the french seams and the adjustable waist. If you see something on the clearance rack that is even labeled too "small" for your daughter if it's a exceptionally good deal (20 dollars or less) and you really like it, try it on them any way! I know I bought a 24 month old dress for my DD1 when she was like 2 1/2 maybe more...she wore it for 2 years! And I didn't even let out the seams! (they are so long to begin with, it really didn't need the seams let out and still was very modest in length) It would probably still fit her even now at nearly 5, if I let out the seams! But, with having a DD2, I decided it wasn't worth the effort to let out the hem, and to just leave it for DD2 to grow into as is.

Any way, summer time is when things go super cheap! Trying to get rid of the last of the xmas dresses! However, if you wait for the ones you love you risk the chance of them selling out of it before you get it in the summer. I just buy according to my budget but also my favorites, and what I can risk them selling out of. All their more expensive dresses are also "hand smocked" which I love! When you are in person you can see and feel the quality.

However, again, I'm not as happy with their "cheaper" line they have out though. While it's still modest and "cute" the quality just isn't there like it is in the more expensive line of clothing. They came out with the cheaper line 2 years ago, when they were on the edge of going out of business cause of the economy and people cutting back on spending the same amount of money as they once did on children's clothing. However, I feel you are actually saving money by buying their expensive line, even at full price, since in reality you can easily get 2 years of wear out of them with out any sewing skills or anything at all! And with just taking out the hem and a little bitty bit of sewing skills I think it wouldn't be too much to think you would get up to 4 years of use out of each dress per a child! Between the fabric and the sewing quality they really hold up! they are the kind you would save and hand down to your grandchildren. Timeless styles, and awesome quality. The cheaper line is still pretty timeless (not really faddish) but seems to me the quality in fabric and sewing just isn't as good. I was so happy at first when the cheaper line came out cause I seen it at first at a distance and thought wow I can now be able to afford MORE of their clothing! But, then when I felt on it and stuff I just wasn't as happy with it. Although still beats the heck out of Walmart and such stores quality, it's just once you have gotten used to their higher quality stuff the other stuff just isn't what you want any more! lol haha

The other thing I want to mention is NOT all the stores are the same. I had two near me in NYC one was awesome and much bigger then the other. The women that worked at the bigger one was very nice, also on tight budgets and often could kind of steer you towards the better deals and such. They also always had videos playing for the children to watch and toys out in the video area for the kids to play with and seemed to "like" children. The women at the smaller store were not helpful at all! Would yell at my children for being children! And never had the videos playing nor the toys out, although their store for sure had the corner that was supposed to be for that! They just wouldn't use it. They didn't seem to "like" children. They also seemed stuck up, and like they were above you and could care less if you were their customer or not. I must say if they were the first encounter I had with that business I probably would of avoided the store thereafter, but since they were my second and my first encounter was the other store with the nice women and nicer store, I still seek out their stores and clothing.

You're right about that, Holly. I found many in my Great Aunt's drawers that were leftover from the 1950's and 60's so I have a ton of different lengths and thankfully, even some for pencil skirts!

I hate the feeling I have when I don't have one on--the way a dress gets stuck in between your legs, depending on the cut? I think there's nothing wrong with legs, but having a slip on underneath a dress is more a "foundations" thing with me and it makes your clothing LOOK right!

It's hard to find slips for big girls too. Well, non-spanx kinda slips. I've been made fun of more than once at work for wearing them, but as a proper Southern lady, I know they are legs, but you aren't supposed to see them though the skirt! One of my co-workers had teen daughters and said her girls had never owned a slip. Sometimes I feel naked without one! Good luck finding them for you little farmgirl!

I noted there was a store near us in Lexington--it's about 50 minutes, but probably very worth the drive a few times a year, especially during the Autumn and Winter months. I always "buy ahead", too, so I'm going to put that on my list of "to do's" for my week of vacation coming up. I did find a slip last night at the LAST stop on my list, a children's consignment store. It was $2.00, but it's a size 4. I'm going to take it in a bit this evening and it should do just fine. Gotta have one, so it's going to have to work!

Sorry didn't know sooner. I love love love Strasburg Children I must say. They are quite expensive sometimes, but they came out with some "cheaper" clothing as well. Their "cheaper" clothing isn't made as well as their more expensive stuff. If you can find one near you, they have awesome clearance racks though. I have gotten AWESOME clothing for my girls there less then 20 dollars a dress. The wonderful thing about their "expensive" clothing is they are french seamed for the hem (making it easily come down another 6 to 8 inches, in length as your children grow!), they also usually have some type of thing around the waist to bring it in for smaller children and let it out as the child grows-buttons, belts, etc. Their "expensive" dresses are made with very very good quality fabric. And my children get two to three years of wear out of each one. They are also already longish, so even with out undoing the french seams I get at LEAST two years of wear with out even having to do anything except not tie the belt as tight or let out the buttons around the waist a little. So when you get one of those on clearance for 20 to 30 dollars you are getting YEARS of use from one dress!

Oh! I looked on that Strasburg site, Heather and the "best of basics" slip is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. So frustrating! Wish I had posted this question before on the forum, but I had little idea it would be such a feat to find a slip for a wee one. Bookmarking this site for later shopping! Thanks, again!

Thanks, Heather--she wears dresses often, especially in the summer because they're just so much cooler. I did think about making one out of a pillow case. I have some old, white ones with white embroidery that I could utilize. Just anything to make the dress a little less see through, and to also provide her with something between the dress and her skin--as I recall, smocking can be itchy, and it's supposed to be 98 degrees on Saturday, so she will need something to wick moisture, as well.

If worse came to worse you could possibly make one out of a pillow case very easily. Just cut arm and neck hole. But, no little girls do not wear dresses any more. In my religion they do-girls wear dresses to every meeting-Sundays, and Bible Study once a week, but mainly most other people no longer dress up their children. It's even hard to find women's slips! I make my own. I haven't made my girls slips though cause they mainly wear clothes from http://www.strasburgchildren.com/ their clothing is thick enough it doesn't need slips really. However they do have some cami's. I use a Elizabeth Lee Design pattern for my own slips. However, I can't find any current slip patterns for little girls you could just run to the store and buy. UHG! I can tell you though they are super simple to make-it's just two pieces of fabric with arm and neck holes! sewn up the side seams, hem, neck and arm holes. You could whip it out even as a novice in a few hours tops. If you have a Strasburg children near you you may want to check there I know they sell "slip" dresses. They sell modest children's clothing mainly.

It does seem like something I've seen only at "easter". Which is silly. Don't little girls wear dresses at other times? Karieann, that's a great start--for next year :) She's a 2T, but the issue is that we need it on Saturday and though I've looked for 2 weeks solid, I haven't found any locally.

I wonder, Darlene--it could work. Just one of those that hasn't any cup for the breastsize camisoles might work if I can cinch the straps up totally. I'll look--I have 2 more consignment shops to cover in our area (that do kid stuff only) and after that, I'm a)out of time and b) out of patience and desperate!

Not being sure of her size (height), would a woman's or junior's camisole work? maybe a size 0 or size 2? Maybe it would be small enough around but long enough to serve as a slip.

Hmmmm, I'll keep thinking.

Maybe a little pink ballet skirt to put under?? The tie type (or is it see through on top too?)
& get her all ready for class while you're at it.
I bet a dance shop would have something lightweight

I can't find any either. Rosemary has one she loves to wear as a nightgown so I looked for more, but they are really hard to find. I asked a the department store, and they said Easter time is the only time they have them anymore. So much for modesty.
