I am trying to get my 72 Hour Evacuation Kit ready for me and my animals, I have 4 dogs and a bird.
We live in the mountains of Colorado as most of you know and it is very dry here and we are always it seems under Red Flag Warning with lots of winds. After the Hayman Fire you just do not want to take things for granted and not be prepared.
So, I am trying to get everything gathered for evacuation so if it happens I just have to grab my animals and throw everything in the truck and off we go to my son's in Denver.
I need some help with my personal Evacuation Pack, maybe things that I did not think of that is important.
So far I have:
My Animals
My Meds
Water
First Aid Kit
Cash Box
Clothes and personal items
Books, Magazines
Crochet and Knitting
Photos
What else ladies that is important that I might miss or have not thought of.
I am working on it today, I really should not have waited so long.
I have the animals things ready:
Crate/Blankets
Leash/Collars w/all tags Medical Records
Food/Treats
Water
All their meds
Then my bird his travel cage and food.
Since I am going to Denver to my sons I will not need some of the things that others might need who will be camping somewhere etc.

Thank you Alee, I think I have it figured out finally! What I am waiting for now is permission from the Chiefs wife to post them, I do not want to get in trouble for that, that would not be good. I do not think she will mind but I do not know that for sure.

Debbie- save the images from your email to your hard drive and then once you have them saved in the quick reply box down at the bottom of the screen you can click on the grey mountains with the grey up arrow. This will generate a pop up box where you can browse for the photos you saved. Then just select the photo and say okay. It takes a few minutes and it seems like nothing is happening. Then suddenly the box disappears and it leaves a line of text in your reply. This means the forum has saved the photos and the line of text references to the saved photo. Once you click the "Submit Reply" button the image will appear on your post!!

It was a long day yesterday, the wives of our little 4 mile fire department fed over 1oo weary and tired fireman, but as always they were all so grateful. I have some wonderful pictures of the Wildland Fire that the chiefs wife took I would love to share with all of you if I could figure out how to get them from my email to the forum. They have the fire controlled but by no means contained. Salvation Army came in last night to help us as we are just a small group of women trying to feed over 100 men, plus we have 100 plus families evacuated. If it were not for our community and all the donation of food we would really have a tough time. But, for the past 2 days the firemen have had 3 meals a day plus all the drinks they need. The Salvation Army will help us now prepare food to continue to feed them for at least the next 4 days.
We are suppose to get rain today so that will really help the firemen fight it. Unless something changes our little area where I live is not jeopardy, thank goodness as they I am able to help where I can and not worry about my place or my animals.
I will try to post pictures.

Thanks everyone for all your help, I did get my gas tank filled up yesterday morning thanks for that tip Cathy that is an important one.
Well, we do have a Wildland Fire Now less than 10 miles from us, firemen have been on it all night, they will bring the planes and helicopters in today to help fight it. I am on my way to the fire house (I am a volunteer for the fire department as a dispatcher) we will be making sack lunches for over 100 fire fighters. 280 families have been evacuated as well as all the animals horses, llamas,dogs and cats etc. I will try to keep everyone posted, hopefully they can get a handle on it today. The wind is not in our favor and it was especially bad yesterday and we will get more wind today.
I am ready to go if needed (but I do not believe it will get this far) but you never know, all I have to do is load my animals and other essential items I have ready into my truck.

In our area it is hurricanes we have to worry about. We usually have several days to get ready, but I am going to begin getting things together and have them all in a handy location. One important thing to remember is to keep your vehicle full of gas. When they start evacuating around here it is almost impossible to get gasoline.

Another very importent item, "CASH", depending on what is happening, going to a bank or ATM might be impossible...so try and put away enough a month so that you have it with the rest of your emergency supplies...blankets, tarps, and a tent would be handy too...

I just taught a class on this Sunday to the men at church. One of the things I gave them was a 3x5 card. They were to write the "top ten" things they would need to get out the house in an emergency and tape it to the back of the front door. In an emergency, we can get a little stressed and forget the important things. So this is a simple way to get us going in the right direction.
Consider which things you would want to keep near a window or door for that quick exit. Or even to reach back in and get them when possible.
I think you have a great list going. It's good to see people thinking about these types of things. You just never know when something is going to go sideways in our world!

IMPORTANT PAPERS!!! Absolutely!!!
Birth certificates, passports, titles, insurance papers, etc., etc.
We have ours in a firesafe which is small enough to grab and go. (Supposed to "survive" a fire if we can't grab and go)
We lost all of that in a house fire in 1994 (arson caused). Be sure you have your purse with drivers license, credit cards and all those IMPORTANT things TOGETHER and handy to "grab and go". Again, I lost all of that because I didn't have it handy to the escape route. It was together but not handy . . . we were in running for our lives!!!

Wow, Cindy thank you so very much, I will certainly add that to my list, makes lots of sense. Golden will be 7 this month and is a beautiful yellow/red Canary, I have had him since he was 3 months old, he is part of our family as well and I would not even consider leaving him behind, although there are folks who think I should. They have actually suggested that if we do have to evacuate just to let him go outdoors, are they nuts! He would never survive as he is a domestic bird. Thank you so much for thinking of him.

For your bird, don't forget a spray bottle to mist him down if he gets hot. Birds can get overheated very quickly. If I'm going to be traveling with my birds during hot weather, I always take a spray bottle, even if the car has a/c. You just never know when your car might break down.

Also, make sure you are rotateing food (stuff that has long shelf life, and does NOT have to be cooked) and water weekly in your emergency supplies, so it does not go bad.

Everyone in our family has a backpack for them to grab in case of an emergency. There are first aid items, water, candles, matches, food, change of clothes. and some other items. We have have emergency packs since the first Iraq war. They come in handy, especially this year with all of the storms that we have had in Indiana.

Don't forget your importent paperwork, deeds, insurance, etc., plus your backup disc's from your computer. I live in earthquake and wildfire zones, I have copys of all my importent papers in a folder in my emergency tub, in the back of my SUV, along with water and dogfood, just in case, cause there is no warning regarding earthquakes...

You never know do you Alee? My biggest concern is my pets as I WILL NOT LEAVE THEM BEHIND, they are my family and they are going with me. I can go with just the clothes on my back my my pets will be with me I guarantee it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Believe it or not we get Tornadoes here too, we had two last year about 10 miles from our place at the Reservoir.
I have only a crawl space to under my house, but it will be the best place for me and my pets to go.
Let us hope and pray we do not every have to use it or evacuate.
