Sorry everyone but I need a place to vent where commonsense still rules. I have ben volunteering at my local SPCA for a while now. You know - walking the dogs, playing with the cats...that kind of thing. I went probably 3 days a week. They decided just recently that all volunteers had to be fingerprinted. Because of the cost they couldn't provide the service. I contacted them because I had just been refingerprinted for teaching and I figured they could take those. Nope. They wanted me to go back to the same agency pay another $120 and be refingerprinted. Why? They really couldn't explain but said that one was for working in schools and one was for volunteering. Same fingerprints though. Please tell me I am missing something or has the world lost its mind?

I agree, the world is bonkers!! If you have the cert. Stating you are free and clear to teach children, in no way should there be a second need for fingerprinting and background checks, to work with animals! I'm sorry, what a pain!! Seems like the more you freely give, the more is demanded of you.
Keep trying to figure out if you can use the existing cert. The doggies and kitties benefit so much from your &hearts

Nope. The world is crazy for sure, but they are requiring finger printing now. I had to be finger printed by our school. If not, I could not go on any field trips etc. However, the school did the finger printing for free. They had their own equipment to do it. Not sure where they got it, or if the school is borrowing it, but they did do the finger printing.

As my hubby would say, start at the top and work your way down. call the head honcho and ask WHY they can't use the fingerprints and background check that has already been done. seems like a really silly attitude to take. good luck, I'd hate for the critters to lose a loving, caring volunteer because of red tape. yeah, it's bunk. I can't even volunteer in my kid's classrooms or chaperone field trips unless I get a fingerprint card :(

A few years back in my state a sex offender passed himself off as a student and registered for 9th grade and everything has been super strict since.

I think the world has gone crazy I would call the SPCA agency and find out why.

Elaine~call the state and ask them what the protocol is and you may find out you can use the ones you already have. It might just be the place where you are volunteering that is requiring a new set. State laws superseed local don't they?

Wow...I've never heard of anything like that. Doesn't make sense to me but then again there's not a lot of sense out there anymore.

too much caffeine and NCIS today.......

I am pretty sure they take your fingerprints and do a background check. The thing I do not understand is that I already have a certficate from the state saying I have been fingerprinted and have had a background check so that I can teach children. I just don't know why they can't use that.

I agree the world is bonkers. This sounds like more than just fingerprinting. Is this also for a background check? If it was just fingerprints a simple stamp pad and paper would do. Or the little kits for having your child's fingerprints at home.

I am saddened by this story Elaine - I agree with the other ladies I feel as if the world has gone mad and a few of us are standing on the side wondering what in the world is going on.... I understand that in today's economy most do not have extra cash laying around and your giving a service they could not afford to pay for so at least they should pay for the finger printing - heck of a lot cheaper then pay folks to care for the animals. I wished you lived closer because I would love to have you come to my farm and spend time with my four legged furry family members who love to give snugs and hugs (goat kisses are always free here) and I wont finger print you... I am sure you will find someone who appreciates your gifts and caring heart.

I would tell them that I can't afford to volunteer there anymore. Some other organization will value your time.

I believe they are darn lucky to have volunteers like you Elaine and they will lose some fabulous volunteers because of it which is sad. $120.00 is a lot of money for folks especially in today's economy. I am so sorry it simply is not right, what will you do?
Keep happy thoughts that hopefully they will change their mind if they loose volunteers because of it.

Here where I live, its because of fraud, they make sure you are who you say you are, and make sure you have no convictions for animal abuse, child abuse or any kind of violence. Since you are exposed to the public, and children, they have found all sorts of nasty people useing the guise of "I want to help the poor animals", but in reality, they are looking for their next victims. So YES it is a financial burden, its not fair to all the good ones, but, at the same time, I understand...

The world has lost it's mind! I can't understand why you would need new fingerprints, like they would change or something. I also can't believe that they make volunteers pay for fingerprints. Next thing you know, they will make you pass through a body scan or get frisked.

The world has lost it's mind!!! Why does the SPCA need people to be fingerprinted anyway.
