Has anyone else gotten this email from Michaels? I am on their
e-mailing list.....
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Michaels Customer:
Michaels has just learned that it may have been a victim of PIN pad tampering in the Chicago area and that customer credit and debit card information may have been compromised.
In the event that this is a more widespread issue, we are taking the precautionary measure of alerting all of our customers so that they may protect themselves. We recommend immediately contacting your bank and/or credit card company to check for and report any unauthorized charges, as well as seek their advice on how to protect your account in the event that your information has been taken. Additional information is available on the Federal Trade Commission website at
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt150.shtm.
We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may have caused you, and we want you to know that we are working with law enforcement authorities in every way we can to help in the investigation.
As always, we thank you for being a Michaels customer.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
John B. Menzer
CEO, Michaels Stores
I too got that email from Michaels, on the same day I had just been there using my card! Arggghhh. I agree with what everyone has been saying. It all just seems wrong. Seems like the world has become a place that protects the people that are "scammers" and the innocent are the ones whose lives are inconvenienced by all of the nonsense!
Good luck to all of us, and hopefully in the end good will win out! (At least thats what I'd like to believe!)
grrrr! I so agree, between idenity theft and flakey card holders, the responcible card holders are left holding or should I say, paying for the bag! (higher prices/intrest etc.)
We had several old unused store credit accounts( Sears, Target, gas.. etc) and had decided several years ago to close all unused & un-necessay accounts, only to find out that by doing that, it can lower your credit score! OMG! we get zinged because we don't want un-needed accounts sitting around...
Ya just can't win fer losin' !
Over the past few weeks I have received emails from various companies that their systems have been hacked and information has been stolen.
I used to always store my credit card numbers with certain companies, like Amazon.com/ just for the convenience. Not going to do that any more. I realize that most credit card companies are really great and credit your account. But I just don't like the whole idea of covering for these theives. We pay for it in the long run. With all the high interest rates, that's how the credit card companies cover their losses.
Then I hear about how an employee of my husband has so much debt that the government was garnishing his wages. My husband's business gets a letter last week: they have released him of his financial responsibilities and he doesn't owe anything.
Why is that? Aren't I going to now be the one to cover his debt in my taxes?
I got the email too...it's getting more and more worriesome to use your credit card these days! Mine was hacked two weeks ago and they purchased train tickets from Russia to Turkey. The credit card company credited the charges and gave me a new card.
I went to Snopes.com to see if there was anything about it, but couldn't find anything.
I am on their (michaels)e-mailer list & I wonder if it was sent out as a mass mailer to cover their butts.
Between getting an email from my credit card about a breach in their security, this one (Michaels) and reading about how some gas stations put a 'hold' on debit cards (that can excede the purchase amount)...just infuriates me....I would love to be a 'cash-n-carry' customer, but I am more of a 'cash & spend it' kinda person! lololol!
I am more penny tight when it comes to credit cards & even debit cards....but if I have a 5spot in my pocket & see a Starbucks...look out! (some old habits are hard to break! lol!).
Our Society (businesses) are making it more difficult to pay cash...everyone wants electronic money...I do understand to some degree, it cuts down on the number of bad checks & late payments,,,but now we have a whole new issue of identity theft.....uugghh! cash is so much more eaiser....even if it is smelly and germ laden! lol!
I always use my debit card as a credit card transaction. Both times I used it as debit at TJ Maxx it was compromised. Good luck!
