Its funny that this is all happening now while my husband is away...3-4 weeks ago the hot water heater went out & I have yet to fix it...why? cause I don't mind the heating the water for baths & dish washing...Now the frig part of the frig has gone out..freezer still works...found that out yesterday when I poured think milk into my cereal...hey the chickens liked it so it didn't go to waste...No if my hubby was here this would all have to be fixed right now...but with me I really don't care. plus I do have a frig that is working in the shop that I have the freezer part full of pumpkin so if I have to I can use it.....there is nothing I really have in the frig right now that needs to be that cold...or whats in there really needs to go anyway since I don't use it & the hubby isn't here to use up all the mustard, catsup ect.....I think though the frig just needs to be pulled away from the wall & the coils cleaned really well as does the underside....most people never do that & this can happen...yeah I had a frig friend who told me all this so now I have to figure out how to get it away from the wall by myself......its in a cubby hole area so I can't get to either side of it but guess its a good excuse to clean out the frig & move the freezer stuff to the bigger freezer in the laundry room.....I just think its funny this happens when I am alone & can deal with it where my hubby would be throwing fits...he has never lived without electricity, hot water ect so he gets very upset & this coming from a man who is in Afghanistan right now...lol.....Its all an adventure to me so with no children I have no problems with this newest event....only thing is if the electric goes I can't check maryJane daily...lol...Michele'

Thank you Michele'! It's wonderful and heartwarming to see so many people here embracing their neighbors and opening their hearts to lend a hand, hug, or whatever they can.

susan what a wonderful way to deal with what is going on with you & to keep the sense of humor.....I wish all could see things like you are seeing right now...it is funny that when things happen you realize that yes you can do what needs to be done...takes abit more time but the rewards are so high for a job well done.....You can now honestly say you are a true farmgirl with the spirit you are showing during this hard time......hen hugs....Michele'

With our utilities being out for the past few days, we went back to basics big time! lol! I've had times where I've lived like that before, but my Squeeze hasn't. Poor guy! Believe it or not, but we had hot water throughout this time because we were very conservative with what was in the tank. Taking a shower was out of the question because they were telling everyone to conserve water after the storms. I had to explain to DH and DS how to take a "spit" bath as my mother calls it (little lukewarm water in a basin, washcloth, soap, pits & privates, rinse, dry). We were all finally able to take a warm shower on Monday and it was GLORIOUS! lol! Some things we all learned:

  • getting by with a "spit" bath periodically is okay, and you won't melt,
  • yes, Johnny...er Tyler, you really CAN read by candle light,
  • Wow, Johnny...er Tyler still remembers how to read!!
  • it's amazing how much light those little outside solar pathway lights generate!!! Eliminated lighting a candle just to go to the bathroom at 3am
  • Cakes made on the grill in a cast iron dutch oven are just as good as cakes made in the oven
  • room temp soda's and water taste just fine
  • lamps with oil are a Godsend when all you had were candles!
  • Listening to storm/damage/recovery info on the radio is much more rewarding than watching sitcoms
  • washing clothes by hand gets them cleaner than using a washing machine
  • create your own 'spin cycle' by swinging each article of wet clothing over your head thus slinging the extra water out of it (tell your puzzled neighbor you're learning to lasso and lost your rope)
  • I really CAN get by without a closet full of clothes
  • wow, look at all the folks in the neighborhood walking and shooting bull with their neighbors! Howdy neighbor! (I discovered 2 blocks away from the house while trying to get a cell phone signal)
  • having 1 next door neighbor who's a cameraman for a local news station, and another neighbor who's a news anchor for another...PRICELESS
  • coffee made over an open fire really DOES taste better than brewed!!!
  • People WILL put issues like politics aside and lend a hand when others are in need

A humbling experience on many levels...

Oh Connie when I was younger I loved to back pack.....& camping the rough way is still one of my favorite things to do...When we were transferred up here by the military we lived in a tent for 2 months cause I did not want to live on the military post while we looked for a house & with 4 dogs, 4 cats & 1 snake an apartment was out of the question...I was so sad when we finally found a house cause I wanted to stay in the tent!!! As long as I have a can to make coffee in I am good to go....& maybe a good book to read in the sun.....yeah I am just waiting to see what happens next...as long as the cats & chickens are ok I am ok.....yes a hot bath/shower is great but I can even live without that...I lived in Ghana West Africa for a bit & learned to take very cold bucket baths! sure wake you up fast thats for sure.....lol...Michele'

Michele, you might make a good back packer! One of the reasons I like it so much is that you need very little but everything you need is important. I've gone weeks without a fridge. I couldn't carry it!
I will say nothing is better than a hot shower after a week or two of roughing it. :)
I do get your point. With so many ways to cope and adjust our expectations we farmgirls can be pretty resourceful.
I saw an ad in a mag a long time ago. It was a young healthy looking woman with woods in the background. Her "word bubble" said "I never want to own more furniture than I can carry." I could so relate!

Too funny Michele! I agree- if I had no kids in the house (and no husband) I wouldnt mind roughing it myself...of course my huisband already thinks I'm half crazy with some of the ideas I have and of things I "want" to get...
Good for you! Enjoy your adventure!
Smiles,
