My hubby and I found this a few years ago at an estate sale. To this day we do not know what it is and no one can tell us. So I thought I would post a picture of it on my blog and maybe one of the farm girls will know. Everyone is so good at trying to figure out what things are.
It is made out of either bone or ivory, and it is like a scoop. It is not very big about 3" by 2". But, it is very beautiful and there is a carved pineapple at the top, very unique.
Okay, lets make a game out of this, I will give a small gift to the person who comes up with the most unique answer for what it might be. We will run the contest through Friday, I will let my hubby pick out the winner.

Well, Debbie and her hubby, Tom, sent the item we've been talking about to us as the prize! Now, if that isn't a special treat I don't know what is!

And, after actually seeing it, handling it and looking at the subtle coloration and the "bumpy" area on the back of the thistle, we believe it to be carved from a stag antler. There are Red Stags in Scotland.
We still don't know it's use/purpose, but my hubby is going with the baptismal scoop idea. This little item is quite shallow and wouldn't hold much, but would hold enough water to "sprinkle" in a baptism.

Could it be carved from a stone? or shell? Looks like it's of Hawaiian nature with the pineapple on top. Maybe used for Poi?

Good Morning Ladies and Happy Friday to you,
My hubby has picked the winner for our little contest.
CJ was the first to tell us that it was not a pineapple but Scottish Thistle, she even posted a photo for us, which he felt is the most important part of the little scoop/caddy.
We were never able to find though what it is really used for, but it is shell and after a lot of research we will go with it being used to hold your tea bag or scoop up Haggis.
So, congratulations CJ, your gift will go in today's mail, we will not tell you what her gift will be, hubby ask that once she receives herit she might want to share with everyone what her little gift is:-)
Thanks again everyone for joining in all the fun.

It is made of a shell for sure. I would say it was for eating like a spoon. it looks like that to me because I would think if you were going to carve something out of a shell, and it would take a long time to do the carvings, that it would be used for everyday use ,to say the time was well worth it... It is an unusual find, that is for sure!!! very pretty!!!

My first impression was that it was made from a shell too. I loved seeing all the different ideas on this. Can't say that I have a clue though. Pretty neat find! |

I've seen little scoops like that in a few antique shops. They were for scooping scented salts and herbs into bathwater in late victorian times. I can't really tell the depth, but the scoops are usually very shallow and carved from shells or small ivory tusk tips.
They are actually highly prized collectables and I would like to find a few for hanging in my bathroom.
I got to say I like the idea of having one for a tea bag holder! Very nice idea!

I think this is a baptismal water scoop. I've seen the same shape used in church, but not necessarily with that handle.

Now I am excited we have actually found a treasure hubby and I. Scottish Thistle makes sense and looks just like the picture. Thanks CJ and Bill for checking it out for me.
And Connie you have a picture of it on your right ring toe, very interesting. What, no picture?

I agree that this is a thistle, not a pineapple. My guess would be a little holder for your tea bag after you take it out of your tea cup!

Looks like shell? If it is it may be a caviar dish/spoon? Is it bone? It is definitely a Scottish Thistle. I have a tattoo of one on my ring toe on my right foot. I know, call me crazy. Well actually I was back in the 70's when I got it. :)

Actually, I think that is a Scottish thistle, because of the leaves.
The Scottish thistle is the national flower of Scotland and its image is used in and on everything. We've traveled there several times and found thistle images in every place imaginable.
I don't know what this little dish might be, but I do believe that is a thistle handle.

I think that it is a serving spoon for somthing like a relish. The pineapple is a symbol of hospitality, and is used a lot at Christmastime in traditional historical decorating here on the east coast in places like Colonial Williamsburg.
The material could also be horn, as in from cattle. We went to a Revolutionary War era re-enactment and learned that it was a commonly used material and when boiled could be cut and shaped into household utensils. I was fascinated by the subject, and I'm sure that more information can be found online. |

I think it's a royal Hawaiian spoon because of the pineapple on top. It's made from a shell and use for scooping up amazing Hawaiian delicacies!
