I am soooo sick of hospital food. While I'm at the hospital with Jacob he doesn't want me to leave and even if I did I'm not familar with the area to know a good place to eat. With trying to eat healthier I've resorted to bringing cheese sticks, nuts, yogurt, and soup to the hospital and getting a salad or two from the cafeteria...but that gets old for a four day stay.

While reading MaryJane's Farm magazine in the bathtub tonight (ahhhh....how relaxing!) I though "DUH! Why didn't I think of her food pouches for the hospital stays!"

My question is, can any of this food be made in a microwave? That is the only appliance available to me at the hospital (besides a fridge). If so, what food would you recommend?! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is something I can make there as we have several four day stays ahead of us and one of the biggest things I dread (besides roommates) is the food options.

Oh and one more thing, sorry to keep going. Cous cous is stored dry and can be easily made in the microwave. In fact, I used to always make it in the microwave before I stopped using the microwave. You could add maybe some precooked (at home) chicken, or what have you to the finished.

Also I think Alice.com sends food directly to your home, but I have never used it before. I have bought hard to find food stuffs from Amazon though.

I so know what you mean about those Hormel things! I tried them a few years ago when I worked at the animal shelter and there was no fridge. Just GROSS. I wasn't even sure it was meat or whatever!

Well, your town is small, it sounds like! That's alright--there are other solutions. Have you ever thought about Amazon.com? I know that's weird, but a lot of folks I know order organic foods through them and often, the shipping is free and you can use coupons.

I really like all the Annie Chuns flavors. Here's a link so you can see what she has to offer. http://www.anniechun.com/

There's a way to sign up for a coupon, too. I recently had the teriyaki with tofu and the sezchaun last week. I even bought some frozen spring rolls to take with that were thawed by the time lunch rolled around and crisped perfectly in the microwave. They don't take up much space in the fridge!!!

Is there a larger grocery near the hospital? I'm sure that's the last thing on earth you want to do is stop before or after treatments, but that might be an "instant" option, too. But DO try Amazon.com!!! You'd be amazed at what's on there!

Joni-
You know you live in a hick town when you don't have any large grocery stores! We have a small chain store but it has not health section. Our Walmart isn't even a super wal-mart so besides a few boxes of cereal and a small fridge section there isn't much food there! I know the closest Super Target or Hy-Vee which has a large natural foods section would have it but those are 45 minutes away! Yep...not many choices around here.

I tried some Hormel Compleats when I first went to the hospital. HORRIBLE!!! No, seriously, I almost threw up when trying to eat some of it and the smell was so bad. I don't know how anyone can eat those things! I've tried frozen meals and they are okay but it's difficult to bring them along as it is a two hour drive and then often two to three hours in clinic before we get to our floor which has a fridge...plus the space in that is fairly limited with 30+ families sharing it. So it's difficult! Which is also why I'm so excited to have some healthy, easy choices along with me! :)
The Annie Chung's sounds very portable and decent too though so will be keeping my eyes out for them. Is there a favorite flavor that you enjoy?

Do you have a larger grocery chain, Elizabeth, that carries organic foods? Our Krogers have a fairly good selection, which is where I buy mine.

Mary Jane's does ship fast! It's been a long time since my budget has allowed me to order, but sometime soon, I hope to!

I'll have to look for the noodle bowls too...our nearest health food store (or any store carrying healthy food is 45 miles away!). With 3 meals a day and four day hospital stays that's 12 meals I need each stay!

MaryJane's ships fast! I ordered just this morning and already have an e-mail that it's been shipped. Depending on the postal system, I *may* get it before leaving this weekend! Yay!

I would think Mary Jane's food would be a good choice, but also, I wanted to add Annie Chung's noodle bowls are good, too. You can find them in the health food/organic aisles and they usually run about $2.50 or so. There are many different flavors, and everything (except the spoon) is right inside. I use them alot at work, where I use the microwave most often.

I didn't get the bare burrito. :( I was looking at it and thought it looked good but couldn't decide between everything! Maybe next time! :)

Can't wait to try the food. I've had the potato soup before and loved it so know the other food will be good too. Loving that a lot is Indian spices...have been wanting to try to eat more Indian type food. Can't believe that I haven't thought of this before!

Now off to renew my MaryJane's magazine subscription. Just noticed that it expired with this month and don't want to miss a single issue!

By the way- the Bare Burrito is brilliant! We buy it in bulk. We can make quick burritos when our life is running ahead of us! :)

Elizabeth, YES! Just as Alee said, all you'll need is a cup for boiling water in the microwave. Then add the boiling water to your MJF package, stir it up, and let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes and enjoy! So, I guess you'll need a spoon as well. If you have questions holler. We'd love to feed you all something better than hospital food! Farmgirl hugs...

Meg

Thank you all for your help! I just placed my order and hope that everything I chose was microwave friendly (I will bring a cup to heat the water in...then pour it into the pouch). I also got a milk chocolate bar set for a treat and one for my mama for mother's day! :)

I'm excited about trying it all - I doubt it will reach me before Friday but I can use it on our next four day stay...I'm going to hang onto it and ONLY use it at the hospital, so I can look forward to a little treat! :) Looking forward to having some good food there for a change!

Yes! You can make the food in the microwave. I find the pouches get a bit fragile feeling if they are microwaved so I would recommend having a cup on hand to heat the water in. At work we have one of those big coffe makers that also dispenses near boiling water for tea and such. That is what I do. It works out great!

I don't know much about MJ's food. But, one could you make some extra meals of regular meals you make at home and freeze them like TV dinners before the stay?

Also personally I feel the same way about hospital cafeterias, while at the same time, hospital food for the patients I have found has gotten better. Is there a way that your hospital will let you order a extra tray for you (not the patient you are there for)? I know the hospital I had my children at the nurses seen my husband was there and we didn't have much money and they started ordering him a tray of patient food for him. Usually whatever I ordered they would order a second tray of. And it was actually pretty good! Things like asparagus quiche! Lamb chops! Really good meals! lol I wish I could of been sent home with some of them. lol haha I also liked they weren't overly salted, like the cafeteria food, or tasted like a lot of preservatives like the cafeteria food tasted like. However, I will say some of the home made soups weren't bad in the cafeteria. Especially the indian curry lentil soup.

I love MJ's food. Since most of it is made with just the addition of boiling water, it is perfect for your situation. The soups are amazing and I adore the black bean hummus!
