Hello, ladies. My husband and I are planning to drive to Montreal this weekend (from Western New York, about a 7 hour drive). We've been there once and liked it a lot, we walked around the Old City area.

Now, in the spirit of adventure and procrastination, we have not made any reservations or definite travel plans. We are leaving our house on Saturday morning and coming back Tuesday night.

If any of you are familiar with the region, we are open to any and all suggestions. Sights we shouldn't miss, routes that are beautiful, best (cheap) places to stay? Would going on to Quebec City be too much for a long weekend? Should we bag Montreal entirely and go somewhere else?

Any advice is welcome. As long as the car doesn't break down, I'm sure it will be a fun trip regardless of where we end up.

Amie

I'm not sure where Bainbridge is, but 6-7 feet of water sounds pretty much like Binghampton as well. Our cousin left his car parked at work the night that the flooding happened, and he couldn't get back into the area for almost a week. When he did, he found that the car was still there but it had been flooded over the roof. That's better than he expected (he thought that the car would have washed downriver and vanished) but still not good for the car!

Amie,

I'm so sorry to hear about your family. We didn't have much of anything in Syracuse but it looks like south and east of here was very badly hit. There was a big dog show scheduled in Bainbridge that was cancelled because the park was under 6-7 ft of water. They say it will be months before the park is usable. And there is another dog show scheduled for August 19th and 20th in Owego and they still don't know if they will be able to hold it or not.

Sorry to put every thing in dog show terms but I show dogs and it's got to be really horrible for them to cancel a show.

Hello. Just to report back, I did not end up going to Montreal this weekend. Because of the flooding, but not because our roads were closed. My husband's cousin lives in Binghampton, which was very hard hit. We went down to help him and his family dig out. I'll post more about that in the Weather section. Thanks, everyone for the suggestions. We're planning to try visiting Montreal again in the fall, so we'll use them then.

Hi Amie! If you get to Montreal, you should go to the Insectarium, the Biodome, and the botanical gardens! For $20.50CDN you can see all three! I think that's a great deal! I'm pushing for you to see the Insectarium because I'm a bug-ologist. :) Check out the website:
http://www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/insectarium/en/index.php

There is also something called the Montreal Museum pass which is good for 3 consecutive days that allows you access to 32 museums. It looks like a really good deal so please check that out!

You should definitely check out old Montreal. It's just really neat to walk around. Here's a website that may help:

I hope you have a fabulous time in Montreal! What I liked to do was walk along St. Catherine street and along St. Denis street and just enjoy the shops, houses and cafes. And if you want the best smoked meat sandwiches, go to Schwartz's (3895 St-Laurent Blvd). Amazing!

I hope you guys have a great time and get the heck out of the rain. Thankfully we haven't had much in Syracuse but all around us is flooded. I hope you are dry. The Thruway is even closed east of here. That always surprises me when they close that down. So far I've found someone on the edge of the Adirondack Park and you in Rochester that belongs to the forums. Usually if it's NY it's the city or so close to it there's no fun in the difference. I'll take our quiet part of the world any day.

Thanks for the suggestions Kathy. I'm in Rochester, so we are pretty close (maybe not by local standards, but compared to how close we are to other people in this group!)

Hi Amie,

I've been to Montreal a number of times because some people I used to work with took us on an outing there every year. I love the Casino d' Montreal. Some how losing Canadian money doesn't seem to hurt quite so much. It interesting to go there just from the point of view that it's a real casino with a dress code and $100. slot machines.

I've also been down on the water front and there was some pretty interesting shopping down there. They also took us to a Middle Age restaurant that was on an island. You were transported back to the Middle Ages and were served a meal with only a knife to eat with. The problem is I don't remember the name of the place. Sorry.

They also took us to a place called Old Munich. I don't recommend it unless you really like German food. The only thing really interesting was watching the tiny waitresses carrying the huge trays of food and beer. I also understand that it's a pretty seedy part of Montreal because they warned us not to leave without the group.

What route are you taking to Montreal. If you are going to go on the Canadian side. The Peace Bridge at Ogdensburg NY is a very small unbusy place to cross the border. Instead of sitting with 5O cars at the 1000 Islands bridge or the crossing between Plattsburg and Montreal, there might be 5 cars there. If you want directions I can give them too you.

Where in the Finger Lakes are you? I'm near Syracuse so we must be almost neighbors.

Kathy
