I like your poem. I can't wait to be leaning on my hoe and looking at my garden grow. Thanks for sharing.

I forgot to say that with my poem I also had a picture of the hoe and the different names that it can be called in a circle around it. I also had a picture of a farmer leaning on a hoe. It turned out pretty good.

If you would like to see a picture of a hula hoe, Truevalue.com has them. they have both a single prong type and a circular type that I'm more familiar with.If you have a True Value in your area you can order online and it will be delivered to the store or the order numbers are listed so you can have the store place the order for you

Hi Diane,
You really can't hear the poem but you can read it (just a play on my wording). Well here goes, I hope you enjoy it as not everyone writes a poem about a favorite garden hoe.

My Favorite Gardening Hoe

Although this hoe has many a name
It has become my favorite in this gardening game
I've come to let all of you know
How much I admire this awesome hoe
With a simple back and forth motion
You can really release a lot of emotion
It quickly removes those young unwanted weeds
So you can tend your other gardening needs
It aerates, cultivates & cuts into the soil
Without using much sweat or toil
To your gardening tools you can add
This amazing hoe with a price not too bad
A new best friend in the garden and a great walking stick
This is the hoe you might want to pick.....
And at the end of the day
Don't be surprised if you hear it say
"Please lean on me,
it's time to let the garden be......
So stand back and survey what you have done
Isn't gardening fun?"

WOW!!! You have been talking about my favorite gardening tool. This hoe has so many names depending on who makes it. I wrote a poem about this hoe for a garden club newsletter. Actually this hoe can be called a Hula Hoe, Action Hoe, Skuddle Hoe, Loop Hoe, Scuffle Hoe, Dual Duty Hoe, Double Edge Hoe, Stirrup Hoe, Dual Action Hoe, Hoop Hoe, Swing Head Hoe and Wiggle Weeder. I would not be without this tool no matter what it is called. I don't go out in my gardens without one. It is an awesome tool.
Let me know if you want to hear my poem.

A hula hoe is a WONDERFUL garden tool.

Works best in good soil, not so good in hard pan type soil.

There is also a "Dutch Hoe" that some of my friends up here use,,,,simular to a Hula Hoe...I wonder if it's the same thing with just a different name....

Yes, I use one and love it! I can weed my 70' x 70' garden in under 2 hours with minimal effort. It works best when the weeds are small and the soil is loose, so the trick is to rototill or weed your space and then keep it clean with the hoe on a regular basis.

I have been using one as long as I have been gardening. I even have a hand held one that doesn't move back and forth like the long handled one that I use in the flower beds. Sure saves my hands from having to pull weeds.

It is! Another farmgirl and I were talking and I mentioned one. She had never heard of one and made a joke comment that still makes me giggle!! So, we were wondering if any other farmgirls had heard of them, or used them? They do not seem to be sold in this part of the country? Use them A LOT in the Calif desert where I am from. They just kinda glide over that sand and pull the weeds up. Or help to break the sand up to cultivate for planting. They may be sold more on the west coast or in more desert climates/areas? Thank you ladies! Blessings, linda www.scatteredlittleblessings.blogspot.com

It is sharp and cuts the weed off just below the dirt. It is fixed to a handle and shaped some what like a stirup with the curved part attached to the handle and the flat sharpened end is about 5 inches across 3/4 inches wide.
LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

oh, I thought it was a hoe, with what looks like a 'stirup'end that has movement(like on a hinge) so you can just glide it back-n-forth to de-weed...sort of like you said Alee, a 'wiggle'....

A Hula Hoe is also known as a circular hoe. It has a loop or metal instead of a spade (if I am remembering correctly) and it cuts both underneath the soil as well as on top. They are supposed to be very good for getting persistant weeds with less whacking at the ground. My understanding is that you get the hoe into the ground and then sort of wiggle it through the soil instead of whack whack whack.
