I know I am always way behind the times on electronic gadgets and etc. So--I'm sure this may be a dumb question, but . . .
I love reading and I love books. I don't have any urge to read a book on a device (like kindle, nook, etc) but I WOULD like to read a daily newspaper on one. Are there any of these devices that you can read newspapers on? Do you get a subscription or something?
If you use there devices, would you give me a brief overview?

Unless I missed it, I can download an Android app on my smartphone. The only thing though, the screen, for me, is kind of eye-strain intensive. But there are literally 1000's of free books plus almost every classic that you can download. I think the next time, I'm going with an Ipad or similar, just because of a larger screen.

Actually I have a nook and they are have lots of books free. They aren't always listed under free books. You can browse the many sections and find them scattered and they also have Free Fridays which they offer a free book. Most of my books are free fromt them and if you are patient many of the newest books come down in price rather fast. Just my two cents worth.

So, if you have a subscription is it like a podcast kind of but for this media? Still figuring out how this works. As fas as ipad goes, that's just too $$ for the forseeable future.

I was just reading on this yesterday and the couple sites I looked at said that the IPad was the best for reading newspapers and magazines on for handheld. Not all magazines are in the formats yet for the handhelds and they felt that the handhelds were sluggish for magazines. Most newspapers have webpages where you can read the paper online and a lot of magazines are now offering online versions that you can read from your computer so you don't even need a handheld unless you specifically want a handheld.
I downloaded the Nook to my Blackberry and have been trying it out to decide if I want to get a handheld. Unfortunately the Kindle doesn't support my Blackberry so I haven't been able to try it yet. I had thought I might go with the Nook until I started looking at pricing, availability of free books, and selection of books available. Kindle prices were cheaper, had more available books, and had a huge selection of books for free. I'm still up in the air though on getting one. I might wait until I can afford an IPad.

As a Kindle owner, I'll tell you, you don't have to buy a Kindle or Nook. You can download the apps on your PC or other gadget - iphone, etc. I have a kindle, but have downloaded Nook onto my personal computer, so I have access to both sites and their related materials. You can read the newspapers, etc., but there is a subscription involved. I just looked on Amazon for the Kindle and you can get a free trial of the papers, but, for example, the New York Times is 19.99 a month for a Kindle subscription. I looked at the NYT site and home delivery (if you're in range - I had to look up Little Rock) was $8.14 a week. So, that's 32+ dollars a month for home delivery, making the kindle cheaper for the daily paper. I don't know what you want to read, but many papers have online editions with the basics free already. You may just want to check into that before anything else. Hope this helps!

Sheila, I don't own an E-reader, but you can buy the Nook and just read periodicals on them.
