what are you girls filling your summer days with lately? are you doing, making, going, creating anything new and different lately? any new hobbies that you've taken up this summer? those of you that have little ones at home for summer vacation .. what are you doing with them this summer? any vacations you've just had or are planning before summer is over?

Lynda~you are not a babbling fool! Sometimes there are so many things on our plate and it overwhelms us. I know that is how I have been lately. Your faith is strong and I know that it will help you to get through the worries and trials!
My summer is crazy! We went to KC for 4 days, came home and are trying to keep the garden up and work on vehicles which have come under attack from Murphy's Law. We are planning a trip to 'Bama in July to see family. I am looking forward to it, except that not all my kids are able to go with us. I've never been that far away from my kids so I'm having some apprehension about this. Thankfully their grandparents are only 10 min. away so I know that they can call if they need anything. Our 23rd anniversary is in July also. I'm hoping that August will be busy with preserving our garden goodies. We too are planning a camping trip...probably somewhere local, but I LOVE camping! There is nothing better than food cooked outdoors. My son graduated HS this year and his party will be in October, but my youngest, who is a freshman, will be doing some summerschool...even tho' I homeschool. It's just been a rough year and we are still playing catch-up. I have jewelry for a wedding in September and one in December so I am working on designs and ideas. Somedays I feel like I don't even have time to breathe, but everything always works out fine if I remember that I'm not the one in control. Thankfully, someone greater than me IS! Have great summers girls! ~Prairiemomma~

Wow, everyone has such wonderful plans and activities lined up. It's so good to hear about so many family based activities. I feel like I just took a tour around the country. Well, my plans aren't quite as extravagant, but we look forward to them nonetheless. Grab a glass of tea and make yourself comfy, I think it's going to be a long one - consider yourself warned :o).

Actually we have already completed one activity; the biggest one, too. On June 10th one of our sons got married in Murphysboro, IL. That's where our new DIL is from, actually Desoto, but it's right next door to Murphysboro. So I did a lot of planning and preparing for it up until that time and I really mean right up until we were walking out the door. I made my dress and put only one row of stitching on some brocade trim that went around the neckline and it kept turning up, so as they were loading things into the van, I was sitting at the machine putting another round of stitches on the trim. Par for the course for me. I bet none of you can relate, uh? LOL I also stamped alot of the things for the wedding; shower thank you notes, wedding programs, rehearsal dinner reminders and gift boxes for the rehearsal dinner. Whew!

The wedding was very nice and we all had a great time. No surprises or unexpected mishaps, so that was really nice. Our 2yr-old twin grandsons were the ring-bearers, they were so cute and did just what you would expect two-year olds to do - entertain the guests on the way down the aisle. They picked up the rose petals that the flower girl was so nicely sprinkling along the aisle runner. And then when the ceremony was over one was ready to go out of church and the other wanted to come back to me so the poor little flower girl was caught in the middle of a tug-o-war. I finally had to get up and walk them out so Erik, the one who wanted me, would quit pulling on her and go on out the church. I always did want to be a flower girl. :o) The flower girl was 6 years old so she could hold her own and she was so patient with the little guys. They were all adorable.

So we have breathed a bit of a sigh of relief, but only for a few days because while our son and wife were on their honeymoon, I got to take care of their two dogs. NOw I know that doesn't seem too daunting, except we do not have any pets at the moment, so my schedule was a whole lot different than I'm used to it being. They are good dogs, so it was enjoyable, just different. They got back last night and I had to pick them up from the airport at 1am, got home a little before 2, talked just a bit about their trip, let the dogs out so they would calm down and got to bed a little after 2:30 only to get back up at 4am to see my husband off to work. I did go back to bed, but then got up again at 6am to get ready for work. No wonder I'm tired and yawning so much. You know you just do what you gotta do and sometimes it doesn't really sink in until you write it down and you see what you have done - craziness, I tell you.

The first part of July I will be going to Chicago for a Pampered Chef conference and am very excited to see the new products for the fall ($850 worth of new items - whew-hoo) and hear about the new incentives and announcements for our business. Plus we just really have a lot of fun. It's a bunch of women staying together, laughing and talking and eating and yes, some drinking. WE all like wine, what can I say, it's just plain fun. And we usually go a day early so you know what that means, Magnificent Mile shopping.

Towards the end of July we are going to Branson with all of our kids and grandkids. My birthday is in January and this year they decided to carve out time to go for a weekend in Branson instead of gifts. Actually that is the gift I always ask for, not Branson, but time and I love it that they are giving that to me this year. A couple years ago, my husband and I bought into a timeshare at Big Cedar Lodge, but we have never used it yet. You see, there's this new concept going around called vacationing and I think you have to take one in order to make use of a time share. WE probably weren't listening when they said that part before we signed on the dotted line. I'm kidding and being sarcastic (sorry), we just don't take vacations (yes, I know we should and need to, anyone of you are welcome to encourage my husband to understand the benefits - he's heard everything I have to say). So.....this will be our birthday weekend, because the weekend we are going happens to also be on his birthday. So it will be fun. The kids want to rent a pantoon boat for one of the days. I've never been on one so I'm not sure what to expect. So, Frannie, I'm with you on this being a new adventure.

After that I'm sure I will be pulling in our thousands of tomatoes and learning new ways to preserve them. We had hundreds, literally, of volunteer cherry tomatoes come up along with hundreds of volunteer pumpkins. It's amazing that anything else has a chance to grow. I've never canned tomatoes, so I don't really know what I am doing. I have a Ball Canning book at home, so I am going to read it, I just hope I don't have to use a pressure canner, I'm very nervous about using it. As much as I love fresh from the garden tomatoes with cottage cheese sprinkled with a little pepper or slapped on a slice of bread with some cheese and a little mayo - oh, the very best summer sandwich, don't you agree? I don't think I can eat all that will be coming in - oh, my. I'm open to suggestions and tips and expertise on how to can them. What do you all usually do, sauce, salsa, stewed, soup, ketchup, whole? Is there anything else? My MIL makes tomato preserves, has anyone else done that or heard of it?

We have a new grandbaby coming at Christmas this year (due date the 26th), so I know I will be sewing some baby things and trying to get a few maternity tops done for our daughter, too. This is her first and she lives in Manhattan, KS, so it is a little tough being so far from her during this time, but she asked me to go to her first dr. appt. last week and that was really special. So I'm guessing I'll be making a few more trips out there before her due date and then we will probably spend Christmas in KS.

If I could ask you all to please say a prayer for her, there will be some difficult situations to work through, not with the pregnancy God-willing, but with the father, as she is not married to him. We are happy to have the baby, but having difficulty dealing with the extenuating details from a distance and how we can help her. We trust and know God is in control over everything and doesn't make mistakes, only we do. He is a merciful, loving and provisional God and we know she is in His care. As hard as it is, we understand the responsibility is upon her to take care of, but you know as a mom, how much you want to be right there for your kids. Anyway, prayers for her situation and for wisdom and patience for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ladies.

You know I think we are doing the least of everyone, but somehow I took up the most space. I'm such a babbling fool. I know it's not as interesting or exciting as most everyone else's, but right now I'm bored at work and you girls are my company and I just keep typing. Unfortunately I don't know how to make it pretty with color and symbols either. What better company could I have, you all make the day go so by much more quickly. I bet you didn't know that, did you? So I really apologize for my verbal onslaught, but now you know the rest of the story. :o) Okay, I'm done (on this thread ;o) ). May God bless each and everyone of you in His most awesome ways always.

In His hands,
Lynda L.

Pray in faith and you will not live in doubt.

One thing I love here where we are is the total lack of fleas in summer. Where we lived before they were a nightmare! We do have ticks in the woods but not any here on our place that I have ever seen..thankfully!
I have been busy so far this summer with taking the kids to little league games, swimming and pageant practices. The kids and I are all "actors" in the big pageant put on here each June. It is called the Manti Mormon Miracle Pageant and is so fun! We have small parts and this is our fourth year. We are New England Villagers this year and are in two scenes..the first scene and scene 25. We get to dress in cool costumes (well..HOT costumes!!) it starts at dark and is amazing. There are 300 people IN the pageant and we had 15,000 people watch it Friday night! It runs this week too..the last night is Saturday. We go up there at 8pm and get home after 11pm..so I have been milking at 11am and 11:30pm or so..weird schedule..but it works.
Our garden is really growing now and the kids are really involved this year..even the boys..who try to avoid the garden work usually.
We are off to baseball games right now..then on to pageant without coming home between..and tomorrow Libby is coming to pick up lambs in the afternoon ...it will be fun to see her. I am ready for a real quiet day and no where I HAVE to go though. I guess maybe in mid July that COULD happen..oh wait..nope..then is girl's camp..which will be fun fun fun!! I am a youth leader and get to go to camp. (will come home to milk though unless I can get STeve trained to milk)

About all you can get in the water up where we camp are canoes and I'm not sure I have the balance for a canoe. I'd really like to find something light like a canoe but with a wider flater bottom. I can just see us canoeing to a campsite with all our gear and three dogs. We don't pack light. That would be a sight!

kathy ... we're going to start 'renting' boats on various rivers .. decided it would probably be easier than hauling a boat all over kentucky .. and .. this way .. we get to experience different kinds of boats (pontoons/houseboat .. which would be new to us .. to the sail and speed boats that we're so accustomed to from living off the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

Frannie, you make sure you watch those tick bites. I have been checking my dogs over today but so far there is no sign that anything is on them. Of course they all have lots of hair.

I don't think we were near the owls nest because we never saw it again and I think we would have if it was trying to scare us off.

I would love to do a land and water trip but we need a boat. The guy I camp with has an old guide boat but it fell off some saw horses and it's keel is split. I keep trying to get him to sell it because I think even with the split keel he would get enough to buy something light that we would really enjoy. I've helped him move it in the past and it weighs a ton. But you know how stubborn men can be.

I've been making dollies, purses, tote bags and whatever strikes my fancy. Planning a trip to NY and RI to see our family this summer and both of my girls, husband and/or significant others and grandson are going too. Our trip will end at the family home by the beach and i'm looking forward to crocquet, sitting on the porch, Del's Lemondade and just relaxing. This Saturday my friends and I went for coffee and sustenance at the Rocket Bakery in Spokane and then off for antiquing and junking. On 7/1 three of us will be trekking down to MJ's Farm for Farm Fair. And I have a major birthday this Friday - the big 50!!! I think I can still get away w/saying I'm 36, but why would I want to!?! Hubbie has a big suprise planned. Don't know what yet.

My summer is pretty much weekends only ( I work all week ) In July I will be going to Frannie's and hopefully to Mullens Lane Farm. In August we are going to Pennsylvania for my family reunion and then to Kennywood Park. Late August we go to Baltimore to visit family and take the kids to the Inner Harbor (they love to ride the peddle boats into the bay) Then we take the kids to the skate park (both of my boys ride skateboards) some of the tricks they do on that thing..I would break my neck LOL. Early September I take my 2 daughters for a weekend in the Poconoes. That is our mother daughters bonding time that way DH and sons can do the man thing. The weekends in between we do alot of camping in Wildcat which is breath taking.

Well...that is how our summer goes.

Oh Frannie, I was deer-tick bitten a week ago. I keep watching for a bull's eye to form, and if it does I'm off to Mme. Doc for the antibiotics. I just hate spraying with Deet, but it's truly the only thing that works. If I spray my ankles (which I've returned to doing) I seem to make out fine... for about 3 hours. Best of luck.

kathy .. we are getting the 'camping bug' too .. been on the road so much .. and hank leaves for his week long bike virginia trip this week .. but he says soon's he gets back .. we're going to do some 'land and river' camping .. we have so many great rivers here in kentucky and we're going to rent 'pontoon' boats to slide down the river all day and camp out on land at night .. we also want to revisit the Smokey Mountains .. oh my goodness .. so many wonderful historic (original) log cabins ..

Hank too likes to go to 'wildneress areas' where you have to 'poop in the woods'! Your OWL adventure sounds awesome .. i wonder if you were camped near it's NEST with baby owlets it was trying to protect!

speaking of 'itch' .. i woke up with two ticks chowing down on my stomach this morning .. one was a teensy DEER TICK too! i tried the 'detergent on a cotton ball' trick that is supposed to make them release and stick .. i coulda' washed a load of laundry with all the soap i slathered on my stomach .. it's little legs were indeed flapping in the breeze .. but he wasn't lettin' go with his teeth .. soooo .. i resorted to the tweezers! the deer-tick luckily released right away!

i think i'll grease me up with suds next time i go to the garden! xo

Camping camping and more camping in the wonderful Adirondack Mountains of New York State. I am just back from four days in a tent. I'm all bit up, and perhaps a bit smelly. And I know there is grit in various places that will need to be washed away. There are no showers or bath rooms where we camp. The big excitment of this trip was an absolutely huge owl dive bombing the camp site. It was so large and so silent and so fast that I have to admit that I screamed. It swooped across the site from the left and turned and swooped back for a second look. But it stayed around long enough in the trees that I got a really good look at it's outline. It was after dark but the sky was still light enough that we could see it's big round head and big body. It let us look at it for a while and then took off. I hoped it would return the next night but it didn't

I guess I'm easily amused. I love stuff like the owl and just sitting around the fire talking and playing cards. I can't wait to go again. I also love letting the dogs be dogs. One has to be tied because she tends to wander off. The other two are herding dogs and always stay within sight. The only problem we had with them this time was that they decided to herd the very few vehicles that pass by on the dirt road. They actually brought a couple of them to a stop in the road including a Rangers truck. Thankfully he was really nice about it. Of course, we confine them when we leave the site and at night.

I guess it's time to go look for some anti-itch cream! And plan for the next camping trip.

welcome tracy! what a fun summer you have planned! have YOU been to ALASKA yet? i think it is about the most breath-taking, awesome place in the United States! oh doooo make sure that you go with him sometime! needlework cash and carry sure sounds like a lot of fun too!!!

miz katee .. sounds like your summer is pretty busy too! have you been to williamsburg before? you will LOVE it ... it would be such fun to be a re-enactor in a colonial or pioneer place! honey hunk and i are going to the drive-in tonight .. to see .. CARS! and i think the second movie is a scary one! we're gonna' order pizza and sodas! i swear .. between movies they play the BEST olde rock and roll music .. always makes me wanna' get outta' the car and jump up on the hood and dance!

hot! hot! hot! here today ... but i did get to town to see my 'townie-gurlfrenz' and to have lunch with a few of them! it was soooooo nice going 'visiting' .. been staying home for the last week ... feeling better .. but mayhaps i might have 'pushed' it a little to much. stopped at a garden center and bought lots and lots of YELLOW flowers!

i've never been much of a pinkie flower person .. i seem to always look for the reds .. oranges .. whites .. with a 'smattering' of purple thrown in ... got a yellow honeysuckle vine (planted it by a pole along our grape vines). also got a pyracantha .. i had one before and it got WAY out of hand .. took over a corner of the house and i had to cut it way back! planted this one on the side of the lower cabin. bought my first rose bush i've had in a long time . i just don't seem to have much luck with them .. but they remind me of my sweet sister who has the BEST luck with them .. so .. i've named it after her: SHASHA! got some yellow day-lilies and lots of other yallows .. that i'm not even sure the name of. bought an 'okra' plant too! i LOVE okra!!!

well, chile, i'm gonna' go read a little (under the fan) before we head for the movies.

so nice hearing everyone's summer plans!

Hey Frannie, glad to hear your pneumonia is leaving town! My DH and I have had colds or viruses or something--they came and went and then came back in like a tornado (back door cold front ;) ) Anyway, we've slowed down but this kind of thing gives me mental energy to do something! I bought a primitive little foot stool/bench last week and decided it was time to make a very little hooked rug to top it. After studying my quilt books for pattern ideas, I scaled down a cockscomb for my rug and got hooking! I'm finished the design and doing the background. Hoping I'll be able to get back to an older and larger hooking project after having some quick success. Also, I'm working on triangle squares for a quilt off and on.

Picking black raspberries are my first job of the day, trying to beat the robins who give me a run for my money. I'm ahead, finally... or maybe they're wisely letting me think so.

I'm off for the summer with my kids, but am working 3rd shift at Target. So I have to sleep part of some days away, unfortunately. So far I haven't accomplished much at home this summer. I have "dreams" of doing lots of projects, but nothing has come to fruition yet as I've had little time after doing yardwork and the normal upkeep of the household. Our family did get Busch Gardens/Adventure Island (water park)/SeaWorld passes, so we've tried to go to one of the first two at least once a week. We need to get down to the library so we can get going on some summer reading. In July, we're driving up to WV for my hubby's class reunion, and to visit his mom and grandma, and some close friends from when we lived up there. On the way home we're "detouring" to Williamsburg, VA to camp somewhere and go to the Busch Gardens there. We've been to the beach a couple of times, and hope to go a few more times too. With my hubby working full-time during the week and being a youth pastor all of the rest of his time, then me working 3rd shift, we stay plenty busy. Most Sunday evenings we have a youth event somewhere. Last weekend, we took the youth to see "Cars" and followed it by going to "Dice's" (a little, quaint tiki-looking ice cream/hotdog shop).

Somewhere in all of that, I'd love to do some much-needed sewing projects and other non-sewing projects...."sigh" LOL

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.

Hi girls, I'm new here but thought it would be fun to reply to the post. I've had a busy spring and sure summer will be just as busy! I leave next Thursday (my birthday) to fly to Libery MO for Liberty Gathering. Very excited! My sister in law's 40th birthday party in WV July 13 then off to Crystal Lake Michigan for a family reunion. Off to a cash and carry needlework market in August. My husband leaves when I do but in the opposite direction: to Alaska for 10 days of fishing and other manly things. In between I will be playing in my gardens and planning on adding two chickens (illegally) to my subdivision back yard.
Happy Summer,

We head out to the Northern Oregon Coast second week in July. Lots of gardening to do. Then in August it is up to the San Juans in Washington and then over to Lake Quilnault (think that is correct spelling) in the Olympic National Forest.

That is going to be how our summer goes.

Great topic! My oldest brought the calander on one of our errand trips last week and we made lists and filled in the calander. What fun!

Monday - Lake Day (provided the weather is good)
Tuesday - Play date morning, Have friends over. Kenpo @ 6pm
Wednesday- Summer care for three children. Afternoon,to local farm to pick our vegetables for the week.
THursday- Summer care for three children. Kenpo @ 6:00
Friday - Summer care for three children. Friday night movie night. Last night, spider man.
Saturday- chores, weekly garden chores. Laundry, clean house.
Sunday- Church, family day. Our options, local state park to hunt lizards and snakes. (for catch and release), hiking, kayaking, picnic in the park, fishing.

Our two "big" summer trips, Arizona to visit brother and girlfriend and our new baby neice. Take the boys on their first backpack over night. Family reunion. My youngest to have fourth surgery on left ear. (late summer). Then school starts.

Unfortunatly sewing goes on hold during these months, but all the top peices I have made over winter go to my girlfriends to be quilted. So I still get to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Lots of gardening. I am focusing on a few more foundation planting, Trees , evergreens , roses, ect.

I am really hoping to set up beds on the back patio for summer sleeping, boy I sure hope to get to that.

Summer reading.

Canning for the first time ever.

Getting ready to harvest Cherries.

sidewalk chalk, teherball, basketball, jump rope and evening walks, running through sprinklers.

I think I really went crazy with this post, it's good to see it all typed up. Maybe I should copy and paste it into word.

Thanks for the fun topic.

hey miz beth .. i sure remember those days .. we stayed outside until after dark .. playing hide and go seek and catching fireflies .. then inside for an hour of that new invention: TV .. then bubble baths and a story before bedtime.

shirley .. we went to france a few years back to a 'rugby' reunion .. hank had played in a tournament there 20 years earlier .. and the 'olde ruggers' got together for a reunion .. it was wonderful .. then hank and i hopped on the train and headed for Italy .. Venice being my most favorite .. the churhes i remember all over Italy as being awesome! OF COURSE, we did all the sightseeing things in and around Rome. I do remember it as not being as 'clean' as i thought it would be though.

Do you spin? I reeeeeeely must get back to that 'someday'. I have a girlfriend in Maryland that goes throught that heart-zapping thingie .. i always worried so for her .. but she took it like an everyday occurrence! She is fine today.

Well, chilluns, i'm gonna' go spend an hour of this pretty summer day watering my newly planted veggie garden! Might venture to town to see all my 'townie gurlfrenz' .. haven't ventured away from the farm for a week now. Pneumonia seems to be heading up the hill and away though! xo

we came back with Glass things, pottery, lace,WINE, LEMON CELLO.
2 weeks of great food and wine and lots of stuff.

Leaving tuesday for Stehekin,Wa at the end of Lake Chelan to our annual spinning get together, only way there is by boat or plane.
One of the same friends and I are going for some R&R after Italy we need some.
Cabins and food and spinning and fun
Then after that, there must be somewhere I can go!!! LOL

All this is inbetween taking my DH to the hosp to get his heart back beating into the right rythum. Hes been zapped 2 times now , hopefully this time it will stay .(cardio version)
