Do you all find that you have about a million things that you can think of to do and can barely find the time to do even two of them? My sweetie and I have talked about raising alpacas, starting a store down the road from where we live in an absolutely lovely building, plus we are doing some renovations in our old farmhouse. My sweetie moved in with me in February and after having lived by myself (well, except for the kids) for over 15 years, it has been quite the adjustment. So now I'd like to build myself a little "shed" away from the house...........okay, we only have 5.8 acres, but a little getaway all of my own to be alone and quiet is just what I need. I will read, draw, daydream..........and I want to help build it. I never have picked up a saw in my life, but now, I want to do this for myself. What do you all think?

Yep, I have eight young'uns (Three of them adopted) but only the two little ones (Jeni 8 and Drew &7) are still at home. Of course the two in college THINK they still live here and come home as often as possible! HA If you have access to the wood and some "junk" you shouldn't have any problem building your dream "room" cheaply. If you'd like to see pictures of ours, e-mail me (scarter@kans.com) and I'll send you some.

8 children? wow, you are an amazing woman and I applaud you. I love my three dearly, but I don't have a whole lot of patience!!! So 8????!!!

Anyway, my son just started working for a guy nearby that is lumbering, or doing cut wood, is that called lumbering? At any rate, was hoping perhaps I could get some lumber from him reasonable....but haven't even asked yet. This is a project that I would love to start next spring, but want to get the planning and plotting done between now and then. $250 sounds like a great price!! There is a guy nearby who has an amazing amount of "junk" but was hoping I could get some old windows or anything that i might use in it. Sounds like you like to decorate too??? I LOVE it, am in the process of putting up wallpaper in my kitchen with my sweetie and (having never done it before, find myself getting sick to my stomach!!) but it is coming out very nice and I love the wallpaper I got.

Wow, am sitting here at work and am running off at the mouth.

Thanks, if I think of any questions will give you a shout!

Georgette

If your just wanting a small "room" you could build one for a little or nothing. I just asked Keith and he said maybe $500 if you had to buy new lumber...We shop at auctions, our local Sale Barn and yard sales...Would probably cost us less than $250. The real expense for us was the siding, insulation and the tin for the roof. (Because it was so big we couldn't find enough used tin and have it look good.) The real "fun" is decorating the inside. I love how mine looks and it always stays so CLEAN!!!...With eight young'uns, that's something I'm not used to! HA If you have any questions, please ask!

Wow, Sher, that sounds absolutely wonderful!! But I wasn't thinking of going quite that far. No plumbing ..........just a little space where I can put my feet up and read or maybe even start a journal..........in peace and quiet. A space of my own.... not that far from the house actually, but far enough so that when I go to my space, everyone will leave me alone and let me be quiet for a while. But yours does sound awfully nice.

For us this isn't a dream...Were actually doing it! Keith started in Feb. and as of now all that is left to do is put in the plumbing and run water. It's a small "cabin" back of our old farm house. I think the building is actually 16X21. Inside we have a small kitchen nook, large living room (It has a hide-a-bed for the little ones to sleep on), pretty good sized bedroom and a small bath that will have just a sink and stool. Outside we have a nice sized porch. By shopping on a shoe-string budget, we have done the whole building for less than $3,000! It's a wonderful place to spend the afternoons and nights away from the stress of life! Trust me, if we can do it, anyone can!!!

Thanks Kathy, I hope you have a GREAT time camping...........we are driving to Black Lake this Sunday to look at a property to "rent" for the summer months, so my sweetie can go fishing, we can both getaway!!! And we don't own it, don't have to pay taxes..............anyway, we are going to go look at it. I'm going to go look at that site right now!!!

Have fun..... Georgette

The guy that is near you is Rob Roy and he is located in West Chazy. He has written a lot of books on this method of building and offers workshops in West Chazy and all over the US. His web site is http://www.cordwoodmasonry.com/Cordwood.html One of his books has a great story about a woman with a bunch of kids whose husband was going to build one of these houses. He was starting a plumbing business and thought it would take awhile for his business to become full time. Well his business was a big hit and he was working long hours and she was living in a trailer with the kids so she went to work on the cordwood house and built it herself in one summer. Yes I've done a lot of research on this method of building. I've got to get going. There is a camp site with my name on it in the Adirondacks.

Georgette, Check out Cord Wood Building. Here is a web site. http://www.green-trust.org/cordwood.htm It looks like there are a lot of other links to other sites. I also have some books on this subject. So if we get together and I can find them I'll bring them. There is a guy up in the North Country, south of Plattsburg, I think that teaches this method of building. One of the things about it is that until you get to the roof, an individual alone can build the walls so that would be something you could do on your own. I agree that yurts are too expensive and I really don't believe that they would handle our snow load up here. Not to many areas of the country can get 5 ft of snow in a day. Another thing that I actually checked out are teepees. You would have to do a web search for web sites. Can you tell that at one point I wanted to build my own house. I think it's that Northern NY thing.

I looked up yurts and they sound like they'd be more expensive than just getting some lumber and building it myself. Well, I want to do most of it myself with alot of help from my sweetie!! So i guess I'll stick with lumber.

Hi Georgette,

I feel the same way too. Wish some of you girlfriends lived closer too. One of the ladies (I think it's Eileen) has a daughter that lives in a yurt in the midwest.

Search on Yurts, they are a round tent, more permanent than a tent, can have a hard wood floor, wood stove, etc. , they were found in Mongolia, kind of a Mongolian "outpost" camp. They use to be made of camel wool/hair but thanks to modern technology the new stuff is great;) A couple different companies advertise in Mother Earth News.

every girl needs a getaway! Have you considered a yurt? They are unique and a dream to sleep in. Also I've seen people convert those premade sheds into some nice little grouch houses. Just have fun with it, it's your space.

This sounds pretty pathetic, but I wish I had friends like you all HERE where I live, I don't have any female friends. Pretty sad....thanks for all the words of encouragement. Karin, I sure can picture it, I've walked my little field and have planned out exactly where I want to put it. And Debbie, what is a yurt? A room of my own, away from the hustle and bustle of the house....

Did I tell you all that I live practically spitting distance from a bar!!! Oh, the weekend nights......and now summer is here and I would like to have the windows open. I love my little place so much, but it never occurred to me about the noise from the bar. And not only that but last year we had a girl busted for prostitution from the bar. Here in the boonies of the north country of waaaaay up north in New York!!

If you can picture it in your mind- you can build it!! When I get an idea, it comes to me they come in phases, as though the plans are being rolled out one at a time. I say go for it!! You'll feel so good when you're done.

Wow Georgette,

I love that idea. I would have no idea where to begin. But I think a yurt might be a good idea!

the Mother Earth News latest issue had plans for building a small cabin for about $5,000 dollars. they were absolutely adorable too..or you what about a yurt, or building one of the wall tents...so many possibilities actually..I say go for it! you never know what you can do until you try.
