Hi ladies. I just returned from a trip to Germany with the BF. My sister is over there so we went for a visit. Wow! It was the trip of a life time as I had never been overseas.
I expected difference when we went --culture, language, but I was mostly surprised at how sustainable the Germans live and of course that made me think of all of you. I admit that I ate way too much, but since we walked a lot I have no regrets. The food is amazing and fresh. The market in Stuttgart...well here are a few photos...
The day we went here, we just bought some cheese, meat, bread, olives and a few other items for lunch and proceeded to eat it right there. It was tasty.
There is so much to describe as we hit three countries, but what really stuck with me was the trash system. Yup, I'm absolutely nuts. They have about 6 bins of trash and they recycle everything and I do mean everything. Trash service even picks up food scraps. Here we have to sort out number 1 & 2 plastics, nope not there. If it is plastic it gets recycled. Boxboard too. And if you don't, well your neighbors remind you. Everywhere we went there were recycle boxes. It was a bit of a shock getting back and not having a place to put a plastic bottle.
The best part were the gardens. Everyone has one and as my sister said, like clockwork they plow them up for the winter, so by the time we went most were empty. Cabbage and onions still abound. I was more surprised that they had had a frost and a freeze and things still looked green. I would love to have seen it in the summer.
I am still adjusting to jet lag and have been up for hours (not quite 6 am here), so I think I'll go find a project to work on.

Wow, sounds like you had a lot of fun. I wish we would recycle more over here. Our diets in the USA are well?? I could go on forever on this one! I am so glad for you gals n here, who love fresh food, taking care of the earth. My little 7 year old daughter recycles papers, popcans and I am so proud of her. She starte this on her own!

Laurie, I would love to got to Germany. That's where my family is from. That market id huge. When I went to visit Ruth in N. Ga. she took me to a German bakery. They get all their supplies from Germany. The bread was SO good. I am so glad you had such a good time. And that you are back home safe again. Maybe you can go back in the spring.

I live in Germany with my Great Grandma for a while when I was only small. I don't really remember much and would love to go back! Looks like you had a lovely time! =)

It was amazing. There was so much we did. I didn't have the same trouble eating baked good there that I do here so that was nice. I got to splurge and have apple strudel!! (mild intolerance to gluten).
I found some really great cheeses and some really strong ones, whew and they have pretzels that are nothing like ours. So fresh, so wonderful. Oh the food, I could go on forever.

My DH was stationed in Germany for six years (before we met) and he loved it! I love how they eat, stop at the market daily for bread, cheese, produce and meats. No chemical preservatives!

Laurie, how interesting and how exciting for you. I would love to go to Germany and see what it is like. That is where my parents met (Heidleburg) and it would just be cool to see their old stomping grounds. Sounds like you had a wonderful time. Rest up!!

Laurie, how wonderful. What a great trip. I have no desire to go to Europe except Germany. And what a great Farmers market! I LOVE farmers markets. They are usually the highlight of most of our trips. I watched a show on PBS the other night, To Market, To Market, to Buy a Fat Pig. They visited several of the larger Markets here in the US. I was surprised that I had been to several of them.
