In MJF magazine the Shoulder to the Wheel issue, page 104 has alot of info on pesticides AND alternatives. I didn't think I would or could use a "push mower" in my small yard. I do, its great & keeps me & my arms in shape! it is a good article & informative article. If you don't have the mag, I think you can read it online. if not, I will type it in the post.

We use a push reel mower here on our fairly decent size lawn and I love the workout and that it uses no fossil fuels - just human power:)

I just saw one at a local church thrift store, but alas, I have no lawn, only desert...Makes me wonder where it came from!

My ex-MIL used to have a reel mower, but she couldn't find anyone to sharpen it for her. We had one at my first house, which had a small yard but now where I live there's no way we could do it. We are thinking of overseeding with clover which needs less water, sets it's own nitrogen and doesn't need as much mowing as traditional grass. Does the article talk about alternatives to grass? I know Maryjane talks in her book about something she uses instead of grass, but I can't remember what it's called.

We just bought a reel mower for our tiny front yard. The old gas mower broke again and I talked my dh into a nice, little push mower...no gas, oil, or repair needed. Just have to sharpen the cutting blades once and awhile. I love it! I was teasing my dh about going "green".  |

I also use a pushmower for my yard. It is a great workout, and sounds much more pleasant than other mowers
