I am embarrassed to say we are very ill prepared with the wind storm wreaking havoc all over Northern Michigan. Without power for two days and no end in sight until possibly Thursday,I am processing what we can do as a family to maintain ourselves when emergencies like this happen.

I can think of a few things right off the bat....
1. Batteries.
2. Candles
3. Extra Flashlights
4. A Bigger Generator!

What's in your emergency survival kit?

I would love to know what is important and what I can really do without!

Melody I think you're right on track with your list, we always have the generator ready,
Gallon of water under each sink
candles
flashlights
batteries
gallons of water in the pantry
food
dog water!!
don't forget the matches, can't light those candles w/o. The other thing we try to do is fill the bathtub w/water, if you have a septic you can "flush" the toilet by using the water in the tub, should last you awhile.

This is not really a true survival kit, but chocolate and any form of carbs helps me survive many things.

We have a hand crank weather radio, as well as a short wave radio

We have oil lamps, LED lanterns and of course, flashlights-both battery and hand crank.

We keep bottled water

We have canned soups and other instant items that can be made over outdoor cookstoves and grills.

We always keep enough bottled water on hand for a week which would give us time to set up a hand pump at the well if we lose electricity for a long time. Usually, every winter we have one ice storm that knocks us out about three days, but we have had some tornadoes that have taken the area off longer. We have kerosene lamps in each room and a bowl and pitcher in each bathroom, just in case. We also keep canned propane on hand to use with a coleman stove for heating up canned goods. I love to can and so we always have soups, canned meats, etc on hand. My real dream is to get the old 1906 wood cook stove rechromed and set up to actually use. It is in perfect working order but kind of looks rough. I just think it would be cool to be able to cook on it and everything. Someday!!
