I wanted music in my life again. I used to play guitar, but due to finger mobility problems, gave it up a few years ago and I am so lousy at wind instruments...bleh!...I sounded like a sick goose trying to learn flute.
I had never considered a drum, it was so everywhere in the 90's that I had in my mind that I wouldn't like it until I happened by this wonderful lady's African Djembe drums. They are all hand made, beautiful and have a warm and mellow sound to my ears. So, the one that I was playing on ended up coming home with me, I simply couldn't leave it behind. I LOVE it, fun and easy to find a rhythm on and soothing to the soul to play...So now I am a drumming fan...any one else here like to drum? If you have never tried drumming before, go ahead and do give it a try...this is just pure delightful fun!!!!!

Annika, that sounds wonderful. I love music and I bet playing that drum is very relaxing. I've been thinking about taking some kind of music lessons, possibly piano. I took several years as a kid and one year in college but I didn't keep it up. I love listening to drumming!

Hi Sherrie, no I don't have any books, but have been working with what I've found online to start with.

I found these three sites and there are a be-jillion more on line sites and videos out there. I think if you are interested in playing a hand drum like the djembe, looking through these sites could be helpful in learning what to look for and how to care for a djembe once you get one. The instructions are pretty basic, I think I can learn from them well enough to get me started.

Like Annika,something about drumming touches my Celtic/Apache heart & soul. It's like meditating,and personally speaking I find it to be very centering when I feel like I'm just sorta out of whack. I think any info on the djembe would be great! Do you have any instructional books on it?

I will try, though I'm still a novice, looking for some kind of idea of what I'm doing 
For me, I think that the beating on a drum and finding particular rhythms that I like speaks to something in my Celtic soul. I like to just let my hands find the beat and go with it. I'm positive that there are traditional rhythms that are played on a Djembe, but I don't yet know what they are. Without sounding too hokey, I hope, I find playing the drum is freeing and relaxing to me and puts me in touch with a very basic part of my spirit that doesn't worry about daily life, but just is there to find peace and relaxation.
I hope to find someone who can actually teach me to play South African music on it, but for now I'm just enjoying making any sound on it that pleases me 
I hope that my little ramble was helpful...
Edit: That being said, I have just found some very educational videos and sites on line for the Djembe drum and will be using them to learn. Let me know if you are interested and I will post them

Our high school band has a percussion ensemble and I love to go listen to them play in the spring. My youngest daughter loves the drums. I bought her and electronic drum pad for her birthday, but the silly thing is missing the a/c adapter so I have to take it back and get another.

Does having a son who is a drummer count? He plays every kind of drum you can think of - tympani, drumset with cymbals and double bass drum pedal, Irish drum, bongos, etc. and of course, the kitchen table with wooden spoons! :-) I love listening to him play.

I was priviledged to hear and watch the Limanya Drum and Dance Ensemble from Milwaukee perform in September. It was absolutely amazing. They were all adults, a couple of the women were probably in their 40s or 50s. The energy and power of their dance and drumming where incredible, full out for over 1/2 hour.
